2 tone paint on my injection.

Post by LONGC16 »

Hi all, Iv just purchased a very clean 2.8inj, 1984. Iv a question on the lower half of the 2 tone paint job, the color on the bottom half seems to be incorrect. It's dark blue and I think it should be grey? The color on the top half in bermuda blue. How can I find out what original color the bottom half is or should be ? I can't find from the nameplate.

Caspian Blue over Strato Silver was definately an option.
The other blues I know of are Paris Blue, Mineral Blue and Titan Blue altough not always two tone iirc...

Nimbus Grey over Strato Silver and Forest Green over Crystal Green were also options.

We will both learn something with the wealth of knowledge on here :D

Another rare one is graphite grey over stratos silver. I have broken quite a few of those over the years but I've not seen one for a long time.

Hi,
there was also Glacier blue over Caspian blue option and Caspian is darker than Glacier blue.

You can find out body color from 3 sources:
1. When you lift spare wheel cover in the boot, there should be on left side sticker (or two if it's two tone color) with name of paint and with XSC code.
2. On VIN plate in engine bay there is box with color code. Write it here and maybe we can find out color. (Ex. D4 is for Glacier blue/Caspian blue in 1984)
3. On body plate in engine bay on the bottom line fifth letter from right is for body paint. (If you don't have vinyl roof, fourth sign from right on bottom line is dash ("-") )

As well as the ones Andy mentioned, Crystal blue could also be specified on a 2.8, and was also available as a two tone over Strato silver.

This assumes you have a pic on your computer (for example on your desktop) already -

1. Go to https://postimages.org/ (you do not have to be a member or login)
2. Click Choose Images
3. Browse to the pic you wish to use and double click it (or click once and click Open)
4. Copy the Direct Link in the list (i.e. click the symbol on the right or highlight it and press Control-c)
5. Open up a new message window on here (as if to type your reply/new message, or whatever, as you normally would)
6. Type your message and when done click the Img button and then press Control-v (this will paste the link you previously copied in step 4)
7. Press Preview to see how it will look or Submit, and you're done.

(This should be made a sticky really, that many people keep asking for it)

It looks wrong tho.... I'm a stickler for originality when it comes to looks on a capri. Il have a look at the boot markings later. The engine name plate is only telling me one colour. Bermuda blue

No, D4 is two tone Glacier blue (top) and Caspian blue (bottom) in 1984 as I wrote before. So your color combination is correct.

My 2.8i from january 1984 has same combination. Or it should have this combination. But 10 years ago when spanish guys from Capri Club Madrid renovate it, they repaint it in Glacier blue whole, top and bottom too.

Hi Tom,
Out of curiosity, what website/ reference book are you using to look up paint codes?

Hi Andrew,
I have in word document some VIN plate decoding manual which I found once on the web and I save it on PC. But it's in Czech language. I'm trying to find source website now. (Original source was: http://capri.kicks-ass.net/cgi-bin/formu_3.cgi , but it isn't working no more)

Body plate decoder (not VIN) is here:
http://www.fordopedia.org/body-plates/static
But it's some strange combination of English and Polish. :-)

Yes, it seems strange how most is in English but some is Polish. Thank goodness for Google translate! :)

If I PM you my e-mail, is it possible you could send me the VIN decoder document that you have saved on your PC?
I would find that very useful to have as reference material.

Yes, no problem ;) , but meanwhile I found the website. But it is czech web.
http://capri.fordever.cz/Tipy/tipy_cz.htm#v%C3%BDroba

When you scrool down to approximately middle of page, there is section "8. KOLONKA: FARBE/COLOUR/PAINT CODE - kod barvy laku" (= color box on VIN plate).
There is that from 01.1974 first character is paint:
D = carnival red (from 1975); regency green metalic (2-layer) (from 1978)
; sienna brown (from 1982); two tone: glacier blue metalic / caspian blue metalic (2-layer) (from 1983).

And second character is year (or some option): 4 = 1984

If czech web isn't displayed properly on your PC and you still want word document PM me mail. ;)
