Getting hard to keep?

Post by blitzy »

Is it me or are ANY Capri parts getting harder and harder to get hold of these days.
I can still remember finding them in scrap yards.
But know getting stuff is just proving well hard its a case of people are keeping all they have to use/trade/sell
OR
Sell them on at a limited number to value rate?

I think it's to do with the laws of supply and demand. 3 Million Capris were made between 1968 and 1986 but only around 10,000 are left (in this country) so most have now been scrapped and gone. With the prices of even rusted hulks being so much these days even less are available for breaking - ask Martin at Caprigear, he's always bemoaning this point.

On top of this Ford only support their vehicles for a maximum of 10 years after they go out of production and are making no new parts for Capris (except I think the oil filter!) so we are all left with a rapidly reducing pool of parts except for the bits made by clubs and pattern manufacturers which so many ^purists" still poo-poo and don't want on their cars, hence the remaining small amount of genuine new old stock parts that some people have in their sheds or spare bedroom is rapidly rising in price and depleting in availabilty.

Very soon it will come to the point that we will have to make do with what the after market provides and we will all have to improvise and modify with what is available to keep the cars on the road, just like the owners of several vintage and classic cars already do.

Ford wise, it's a pity there isn't somewhere like Rimmer Bros that cater for Stags etc as they are a similar era...

Do you buy items incase you need them and store them or wait until you need it and then panic :?

Funny question as we all know that 20 odd years ago you could buy a Capri for penny’s and parts were as easy to pick up as dirt . But with prices of things like a sunroof Handel going for £100 or a old radio for £200 what is going on . Yes I do have spares but as we all say we may need that part . Thank god for Capri Gear , Tickover & Capri Club also us little lot on here as some bits I don’t think we would find .
But agree it’s a shame we don’t have like VW parts or even stags and MGs .

It's a no brainer, in my opinion. You have to stockpile what you can afford to. It's a bit of a selfish attitude, I admit, but sadly you have to do what you have to do.
Take, for example, the throttle cables for the 2.8. Luckily, they seem to be re-manufactured again now. However, a while ago you couldn't get new ones from anywhere, and it looked as though the manufacturers had stopped making them. Can you blame owners of 2.8s from stockpiling a secondhand item or two? A breakage of a simple part like that could potentially mean the car being off the road for some time.

I better to have it and not need it than the other  Spent enough this year, maybe get the odd bits in the future....

It is yes, I don't like that aspect. It is stopping people from fixing their cars or keeping them on the road, with other people sat with stocks of parts they might never use.

I don't like feeling guilty when someone asks for a part as they are struggling to find one and I know I have one knocking around, but need to keep it for myself as spares or something, kind of takes the fun away from it a little

Yes, that's exactly it. It's worse when I see something for sale, like on here in the parts section, from a good member at a reasonable honest price, and someone snaps it up who doesn't actually need it.

Spot on, but it's a shame that we have to do it because the parts aren't around. Engine parts usually aren't too bad as the Pinto, Essex and Cologne engines have been used in a horde of other cars as well which is helpful, but the small bits that are like hen's teeth to come by are the parts that are annoying when they come up for sale for a small fortune.

I'm glad people like Martin are helping by getting parts like petrol tanks re-made, but I can imagine its a massive ball-ache and not possible to start getting the little things like sunroof handles, switches/dials etc. re-made either

Absolutely yes. We are incredibly lucky to have people like Martin, and the Capri Club, and those making steel panels, etc. Can't understand the animosity some have to the Capri Club especially, I mean, it wouldn't surprise me if there were more Capri's driving around with a Capri Club parcel shelf for instance, than an original one.

It's also unfortunate that due to the high asking price of certain Capri's, many sellers feel the need to hike up their parts prices :spank:
I see parts on here from enthusiasts which are sensibly priced which is great....

I would rather sell at a sensible price enabling an owner to keep their car on the road or have as many standard parts still in place as possible!
But as money is the root of all evil I wont hold my breath :?

Respect Andy :) Pity everyone doesn't feel the same. It's different for those in business, I can understand that, but for all of us mortal Carpi owners it's a pity that all don't share the opinion you have given right there.

:agree: Paul a business has to make money, but I feel far too many people have parts they no longer need and would rather keep items in the attic for another 10 years than sell them at a more reasonable price :(

I know people that have Pirelli P6 tyres stashed away....Due to the age they will never be any good for road use and unless they are going to concours/ trailer the car they are pointless to keep imo, unless using as winter storage etc...Some people have a hoarding issue

I gave a set of Goodyear NCTs away some years ago to someone on here, as imo they were too old to drive on and it helped them out for their purpose...Happy Days

People pumping parts prices up (Say that three times quickly!) is my biggest gripe about the whole thing, and while I appreciate CCI are great at supplying parts, they're probably the worst for it in some cases.

Looking through their magazine for sale section at the back I regularly see parts at what look like massively inflated prices (like fishnet headrests for £800 one time!) which I feel is a little ironic... They are there to help us keep the car on the road and have to turn a profit I guess sure, but I'd much rather they have Andy's mentality and don't try to milk the members for stuff they need - If we weren't around they'd be out of business!

Sorry if these belong to anyone on here, but rare or not this is a ridiculous price hence they have been for sale for a considerable time

I do keep all the parts I have upgraded as if it’s sold on they can put back to standard , but I have a few parts that I will need one day like belts bulbs lights dash clocks and a few steering parts but anything I have found I have found a home for .
I am still sorting stuff out from when we moved so many years ago I just put straight up in the loft thinking I would buy a Capri again when the kids were older and it payed off really .
No I always say if somebody needs something I have one as if it was me looking for a part I would hope somebody had one .

Should have bought a automatic rad for Dan all them years ago .

Also fish net head rests I remeber seeing loads in breakers yard and I had them on my Mk2 Escort . Christ if only I had kept my cars

Also yes thank god for Tickover , Martin and CCI

That's ridiculous. I know I got my first car back in 2011 and the second one in 2015, but even so, I paid the exact same amount for both cars put together as the cost of those headrests! (£1650)

And I wish you had kept that rad Jason, would make my life so much easier
