" Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few"

RIP Geoffrey Wellum.

If it wasn't for men like him, who mostly had a very short life expectancy, we'd all be speaking German now.

:agree: Paul,
Unfortunately far too many young people have no idea what these people did for our country :(

I often wonder if we had lost to the Germans, would have the same issues with increasing crime, violence and overall lack of respect we have now :?

Very sad I have been brought up on “ during the war “ story’s from my grandad who is 94 now and was in the Royal Navy during the war and afterwards joined fords in Dagenham . Yes not to offend anybody on here but he was more against the Japanese then the Germans , a few of his ships he was on were hit and he was left in the water for a long time with sharks swimming around , I said how did you keep going . He said I had a fag in my pocket that I did not want to waste . Only really talks about things when he has had a few drinks .

No as you say thank god they did what they did . But who owns the mighty merlin engine that was in the spitfire ....yes the Germans . Saying that my mother in law still goes on about the Romans when they invaded as I think she was young then

Up to when I was made redundant in 2015 I was an instructor/lecturer in Motor Mechanics. One thing I was an absolute stickler for was that at 11AM on the 11th November the class would hold the 2 minute silence for Armistice Day.

One year a young student, about 15 years old, of Pakistani descent shouted out "why are we doing this shit!". I rounded on him to shut up then when the 2 mins was up I asked him what his religion was. I then asked him what colour his eyes and his skin were. Following on this I asked what he had done in history at school. "Don't do history" he replied. I then asked him if he had heard of Hitler and the Nazi's. Oh yeah - evil lot he said.

I then asked him to think about if people with dark skin and brown eyes would be alive under a Nazi government. Or would even I with brown eyes be allowed. Well, erm no said the boy. I said to him then that that is why we remember and respect these people who gave their own lives so that we can now live as we do.

All I can say is that there was total silence from the whole , usually badly behaved, class for the rest of their lesson.

In answer to your question Andy i think that yes there would have been violence under a Nazi regime as we Brits would never have properly surrendered and resitance aand reprisal would have been the way things went on. Today's society (or lack thereof) is caused by creeping political correctness ie lesser punishments, kids not being brought up properly and by couldn't give a fuck parents, governments and those in authority frightened of legal action/ compensation culture or their names being sullied by the media and press if they try to do anything about it. I could add loads of other things too but probably better not.

Paul, the bloody PC Brigade have a lot to answer for, and have helped create the monster in society we have to live with.

Also not enough Police on the streets, prisons like holiday camps, punishments that are not severe enough, parents that don't care or have no control the list goes on!

When caught they should be put in the army 1950s style and see how they like that.
I used to watch Bad Lads Army, it was good and most of the brats didn't like the discipline and weren't so 'hard' after a coupe of weeks :crying:

This was how he was affected at the time:

"I stretched out ... on the ... bed and broke down. I grieved for my lost friends in the squadron and I cursed that I had reached the pinnacle of my life before the age of 22. I'd gone over the top. A medal and a royal handshake didn't seem important any more. Two full tours on Spitfires, the Battle of Britain and nearly one hundred escorts and fighter sweeps over occupied France and I felt destroyed by the war"

Hero is a word that is based about Willy nilly these days, the word should be reserved for gents like him who selflessly risked his life not knowing whether he would survive or not to safeguard the freedom of the country, R.I.P

I have the greatest respect for what his generation did for the country, my grandad was a RAF pilot in ww2 I never had the honour of knowing him as he died when my dad was 14, my nan always said I was exactly like him which I take as a huge compliment

His memoir, First Light, is a very affecting account of his experiences as a young man and well worth seeking out if you've not read it.

Thought I would post up here . But I had some bad news when away this week that my best friend or grandad had passed away at a grand old age of 94 . So as you can see Iam Home early as my wife Marie drove me home threw the night .
I must say at 94 he had a great life but it’s never easy losing somebody you love and he died with my Mum & Dad with him .
He served in WW2 in the Royal Navy in the engine rooms and then started work at fords dagenham after the war .
The reason I love the Capri is because it was the first car I drove and remember at a young age doing over 100mph on the A127 .
With him at the wheel and me saying can we go any faster . Can’t do that now on the roads .
I have a picture of him with my Capri now as he was a Capri fan .
RIP W D Varker 18/6/1924 - 23/8/2018

He was my real Hero .....

My condolences to you and your family Jason. I lost my mum (who was a similar age to your grandad) 3 months ago and I know how painful losing someone close is.

Keep your chin up mate, I know it's difficult but it's probably what he would want.

Hi Jason, Have already spoke with you but yep I echo all thats been said above mate. Was very sad to hear your Grandad passed away. What a great age to have lived to. You must have so many fond memories and stories to cherish of his time in the Royal Navy and his time at Ford, which is why of course you have your Capri today, but yep still a very sad time for you and your family. Take care mate and best wishes to you and your family at this difficult time.
