Restoration of Underside of 2.8 capri - terminology

Post by CapriCrayford3000 »

Hi all. Was hoping someone could help. I am looking to tidy up the underside of my brookie. Could you please tell me the names of the two parts of the underside I have highlighted in red?

Slso how best to clean them up? Would replacing them be the best bet?

Many thanks J

First picture is the gearbox crossmember, if you support the gearbox you can remove this to refurbish it. The second pictures are the chassis outriggers. These usually get squashed by people who think they're jacking points. I have new outriggers in stock.

Hi,
As Martin says, the outriggers are available as repro items. The gearbox crossmember should be easy to refurbish yourself, just a clean with a wire brush and a repaint should do the trick. While the crossmember is off the car, it might be sensible to check the condition of the rubber mount. If a replacement is necessary, these are readily available to buy:

It's NOT a jacking point, it's a floor stiffener or outrigger as Martin said in his post. The one in the OP's picture is a bit mangled due to having been jacked on it.

Thanks again.

If one was to replace those outriggers, could the car still make the claim '.... retains all original panels ....'

Could anyone advise how the old outriggers are to be removed and the new ones pit on please?

They are spot welded to the floor and the chassis rail. You will have to clean all the underseal and seam sealer off then drill out the spot welds, trying to only drill through the old out rigger and not the floor as well.

The new one can then be spot or plug welded in place.

If you are not competent with welding it may pay to get a professional to do this for you.

Remember that you don't have to change them just because they're bent so long as they're structurally sound and not rusted through. Obviously well fitted new ones will look much better.

Its only an outrigger rather than a floor section panel - ok they weld into place rather than bolt on so they are arguably less likely to be changed than say a bumper bracket but they aren't a panel.

You don't need to be taking that floor-stiffener off! Scrape it clean with an old half-inch wood chisel, straighten the kinks with mole grips or plumbers pliers then clean up & Jenolite to kill the rust & then paint of your choice followed by underseal. It will then look as good as new without any interior trim removal or welding or vast expense. Spend the cash on something more worthwhile.

Be careful removing the 4 bolts to get the gearbox cross member off. 3 out of 4 snapped on mine. Made drilling and tapping under the car really enjoyable
I KNOW MY CAR IS OLDER THAN ME......WHATS YOUR POINT???
