Mk1 Capri stereo install

Post by Kev Ush »

Hi folks,

I’ve been thinking about fitting a stereo to my Mk1. I’m not big into listening to music but sometimes it could be nice to have something to listen to in the background on long drives when the conversation runs out.

My problem is I refuse to cut the dash to fit the head unit or cut any metal on the car to fit speakers.

The solution I’ve found is to fit a retrosound headunit. They still look retro and connect to an iPhone...perfect.

The speakers...I’m not sure about. Retrosound also make dual voice coil speakers to fit in the dash. I know this will comprise sound quality having just one speaker mounted in dash but like I said music isn’t a passion of mine.

Does anyone know how the dash speaker on Mk1 is mounted and what size it is? I tried to have a look when I had my instrument cluster out but I couldn’t see an obvious way of mounting the speaker.

Failing that is there anywhere else I could fit speakers so they’re not to in your face and without cutting any metal? I don’t mind cutting door cards if I have to as they can be bought new if I want to put it back the way it was.

Thanks,

Kevin

What about a pair of rear shelf speakers? Should be able to fit these somehow without cutting or drilling.

Here's the sort of thing I mean.

I would get a boom box or Bluetooth speaker as a guy in a mk1 Escort had that done and the sounds was great and it all streamed threw his phone , I did think that’s a great thought as you can use the speaker in doors when not using in the car .
