Tyre Pressure Check

Post by andyd »

What do you chaps use to check yours?
I use one of these http://cdn1.autoexpress.co.uk/sites/aut ... k=mjob474u It seems to read the same as my non Halfords foot pump.

I have used the Sainsburys machine, but according to my local tyre fitter they aren't accurate....Although after they fitted 4 tyres on my Sierra last Spring, all were wrong by several pounds when I checked them the following day at home.

Had the same this morning at a different tyre company when I got 2 new front tyres on the Focus, told him 31psi, just checked them over 4 hours later with my devices mentioned above, one was 33 the other 36 :?

I have just always used the gauge on my Halfords foot pump Andy. And put a little air in there at the same time if it needs it. Never really needed a separate tester, ever!

If I was to get one though I would choose an analogue one. Small battery devices (especially those which may be kept in a garage or car) are a pain, batteries can last no time at all in a cold environment, and they always go when you need to use it.

Hi Paul,
My footpump isn't digital just a needle, but as I said it seems accurate with the Halfords gauge. I just use them quite regularly at home too, probably as accurate as you can get.

I have a few spare batteries in case they start to play up.

Hi Andy,
I don't bother with a separate pressure tester, but use the gauge on my compressor.
I can highly recommend one of these that I've been using one of these for the past year.

I am lucky here as my back & legs don’t work that good so I get my son or Dad to check them with a auto pump or at a garage station but what I do find on our Mercedes bus it has a tyre pressure system built in and they are all set at 50psi and they go up to 55psi on a run when they have warmed up . So keep this in mind if checking when Tyres are warm .

I have the 2.8i wheels so what should I be putting in mine 28 in all four corners ?

Bear in mind that you don't have the weight of the V6 over the front wheels. It won't do any harm to try 28 psi and see how it goes.

I always thought driving somewhere to do your pressures was a bit daft.

Will stick with footpump at home for now :)

Your right Andrew the car does drive spot on and no wheel wobble but I might just drop the fronts to 26 or 25 as I will hit the wet stuff one day .

Might be an obvious thing to point out, but pressures will read differently at different temperatures iirc

That's why I've never understood why people take cars to the petrol stations to check tyre pressures, surely it needs to be done when cold.

I do like the look of that analogue tyre pressure gauge and I'm very tempted to buy one. The trouble is it gets a bit expensive if I get three of them..... :D

Just treated myself to one.
It looks and feels like a great quality bit of kit, I'm really pleased with it. As it turns out, the digital display on my inflator gives the same readings, but at least there's a small sense of satisfaction using an old school analogue gauge.

Looks Retro.
Glad it reads the same as your other device. Nothing worse if it read differently  Which one would you trust :banghead:
