Oil Filters

Post by pbar »

Just wondering, which oil filters people usually prefer and why. Carparts4less have those below, great prices, and I am leaning towards Bosch, but for no reason other than the name.

Not sure about the crossland ones although they are a long established company, but all the rest are good. I've got Mann ones, had a deal with my local motor factors and bulk bought them (10) for £2 each. They are white too, like a Ford one. Hengst are a good German company and make OE filters for many German cars.

A Ford mechanic once told me that Fram made the original EFL90's for Ford back in the day.

Thanks Paul. Sounds like they are all worthy then really. Might go for the Mann one, if they are more like the original Ford in colour, at least I have a reason for the choice :)

Any of those Paul except the Crosland filters.... There were some bad reports on them a while ago, reportedly made in China and not good quality at all.

I'll try to find out more later.

All the best

Yeah I don't buy them now...... This was what I was thinking about https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post ... tm?t=28684

Not necessarily known to be no good, but dubious to where they are made now and something as important as an oil filter its not worth cutting corners.

Not sure how true this is, but I also heard that they tested an engine using a Bosch oil filter and after running for can't remember how long, they tested the oil and it was actually cleaner than the new oil. Seems a bit unbelievable but I do rate Bosch stuff!

Main thing with all filters is to make sure they have a non return valve in them. This stops the oil draining back to the sump when the car is at rest and gives a quicker supply to the engine's galleries when it is re started.

Back in the dark ages when I was on the tools the Crossland ones didn't have them on some filters;- maybe that has changed now.

That about says it all. I had a GTi golf (white not red!) which I had bought to resell, about 12 years ago. It had a crossland filter on it. One time I started the car up and the filter did explode. I thought the oil pressure relief valve had stuck but upon testing oil pressures everything was ok so that just about backs up what everyone has said about the crossland filters.

Why is all British engineering being asset stripped and relocated to China? Just look at MG and these horrible Chinese takeaway things they call MG's these days. Looking at one makes me want to vomit - they are no more an MG than I am the woman in that photo of Nicks!

Few months ago I was after an oil filter and as I happened to be going past a Ford main dealer went in. EFL90? Blank face. What car was that for sir? What's a Capri? Or a Cortina or Sierra... never heard of any of them sir.

Try saying it's for an Escort Cosworth next time. Even the youngest workers in the parts department have heard of those!

If anybody out there is struggling to get their local dealer to find the EFL90 filters on their systems, the FINIS is 1555451 and the part number is 74HM 6714 AA. I hope that helps!

Hi,
Has anybody bought an EFL90 filter from a main dealer recently?
I just wanted to know how much they were compared with the price online. The best I found was £8.45 from Hendy.
