Thanks for the hot lead, perhaps it might be worth my while making a few phone calls to find out.

Those parts of yours are certainly coming up a treat with the methods you use Andrew.
And I still like the tea towel.

Thank you, it's kind of you to say so. It seems that some other forum members have now got the polishing bug!
The tea towel is still going strong, and I suspect it will make a few more appearances on this forum in the future!

Re: Project: Metal Polishing
A small update. I've been at this polishing lark for nearly two years now (not non-stop!), and I'm still amazed at what can be acheived with a little patience.

Have you ever or anybody used a Ultrasonic Cleaner as I repair pocket watches and clocks I have seen many people stating to use these even more , as for a brass carriage clock it would be a easy quick job I think . I still go down the safe old way .
I might put a small one down on my Xmas list and have a look .

No, I've never used one.Jasonmarie wrote:Have you ever or anybody used a Ultrasonic Cleaner
The small ones are cheap enough to buy but I've never felt the need for one.
Please keep us updated if you do get one.

Re: Project: Metal Polishing
So had some electrical work done at home this week and had to sort out a few tool boxes with yes a few bulbs and points and stuff found for a Capri but I also found the screen wash jet and it had paint on so I thought all I can clean this and put it in the Capri just leaving one to do .
But question as they are brass did you clear coat afterwards ? Or even use brass lacquer?
Yes it cleaned up well just might need to get some new pipe is it 4mm or 3mm ?

Hi Jason,Jasonmarie wrote:
That looks really good, nice one!
A tip I was given by somebody who finishes metal for a living is to wipe over the polished item with WD40. Also, once it's polished, don't touch it without wearing gloves as the acid in your hands will speed up the tarnishing. I don't use lacquer or anything.
I'm not sure about the size of the pipe.

What lacquer do you use on brass? Can a standard car paint spray lacquer be used?Jasonmarie wrote:Wd40 yes never thought of that yes I do use a clear coat on brass Clara I’ve clock as they will tarnish really bad .

Re: Project: Metal Polishing
A very good question so I have used two products what have been very good but I was thinking of trying clear coat myself to see what finish it would give .
So I have not done anything yet and will clear coat mine and leave outside to see how it gets on . Love a challenge like that .
But these are the two that are very good .
This is very good for inside brass tags or screws for that all new look but I use a very fine art brush .

It will be interesting to see if the clear coat lasts when exposed to the elements. Getting it to adhere to polished brass might be a problem too.

I might use a 200 grit sandpaper as then might just give it something to hold on to , I will post up pictures of trying to spray .
Yes I like them little hand drill things that have buffing wheels on .
