Interior trim refurbishment

Post by davboy »

Wondered if anyone had a recommendation for someone who could refurbish interior plastic/vinyl trim - the likes of the centre console lid on a 2.8i. My local chipsaway guy doesn't do it; but wondered if anyone knew of a particular specialist who would be good at that, who I could send parts to.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Best regards,

David.

Hi,
It's well documented on here that the Halfords vinyl paint is very good indeed for the hard plastic trim. However, I doubt whether it would be suitable for the centre console lid. Recovering or replacement is probably the best option there.
Try Martin at Caprigear to see if he's got a replacement item in good condition.

I'm so excited, and I just cant hide it....I'm about to lose control and I think I like it....

Halfords Flexible Vinyl Paint......what can I say about this superb paint that hasn't already been said....well........

Ok I wont put you all into a deep sleep by repeating my love for this product, but I just have to say a few words if I may....

David, yep as already has been mentioned this paint is really rather good indeed for the interior trim. I sprayed every single bit of trim that I could remove with this stuff and it turned out really well. Even whipped out the boot liners to give them a freshen up....in fact my love affair with HFVP actually first began with my boot liners and since then we have been on quite a journey together :)

Seriously though as already said here, it really is highly recommended for use on all plastic interior trim. If your trim is the grey then you want the DARK GREY paint which is a very good match indeed....but you MUST apply with very fine coats and build it up until you get the desired finish you want. Don't rush in with heavy coats as you could lose the original look of trim and end up with something that looks like its been painted...even though it has !

I tend to think of it being a treatment to re-discover the life in the trim again....a bit like a good skin care product

Anyway you might find your local Halfords is out of stock as I toured around the UK last year and emptied most of the shelves :sorry: but they can order it in for you mate.

Andrew, I know somwone who has used HFVP for this very thing...hmmm...can you guess who ? ......

Mate I was gonna get mine recoverd but very expensive so I though sod it might as well give it a go and see how it turns out....

Very light coats just enough to freshen up the lid and as its a flexible paint it did not harden up as a normal paint might do and as I just applied a few light coats I still managed to retain the 'antique' look which is nice. Did not want it to lose its charm but more to just give it a bit of a facelift which it did pretty well. Without wanting to rob Martin of the business I found this a great way to inject new life into my lid...but obviously it will not perform miracles (well.....) if Davids lid is in a bit of a poor condition in which case then yep get it recovered or check to see what Martin has.

I cannot tell you how great its been talking about HFVP again...my Product of the Year 2016 !!

All the best chaps

Nick

Just hang on a minute, I spotted this whilst looking for something -

Also from Halfords, they do flexible vinyl paint, dark grey - absolutely perfect match to the grey plastic dash trim

That's a post from Steve (stevemarl) from 2014!

Nick - how do you plead?! Was this the beginning of your fetish :)

I planning to cut a piece of vinyl out of the back of a scrap seat and use it to recover my arm rest. I though I'd sculpt a bit of the foam out of the seat as well to go under the vinyl. Has anyone else done similar?

I thought I'd use a couple of coats of Nick's favorite just to get it to a similar colour to the old one.

Some of us were suggesting it back in 2003 (although not specifically halfords stuff)!!!
