..is there anything aside from the alternator failing that would make it come on? It has been getting worse, and now does it at high revs too.
Thanks.

Re: Alternator light..
Hi mate,
Unfortunately every time I have had this problem it's been the alternator, it start's with the alternator warning light on at low revs then gradually it start's to take more and more rpm's to get it to go out and eventually it stay's on all the time, to be doubly sure you could test the output of the alternator with a multi meter

Re: Alternator light..
You might get away with a new regulator. They come with new brushes as well and are held on by 2 screws on the back of the alternator.

Re: Alternator light..
You were both right.
Refused to start this morning.. but Euro Car Parts got an alternator in by 1300. Little bit annoying, as it was blatantly just the brushes that had gone.. but I couldn't find them quick enough and needed the car by 1500. The old alternator was only 18 months - 2 years old. Someone is making a good profit somewhere. The new alternator, same brand (Lucas) and same part number is MUCH better quality though.
Word of warning... I found two years ago that the alternator they have listed for pinto engined Capris is incorrect! The tensioner flange is in totally the wrong place (its for a 1.3 I think). The one we pinto people need is LRA00462.. in case you need to call them up (nothing shows when you type that number into their search engine, you have to call them and quote it).
Strangely, the receipt shows the part number for the 1.3 alternator, 401590491. Not sure what's going on over there, but it is the Lucas part number LRA00462 you need.

Don't all motor factors work off the same databases? Presumably if one is wrong, they'll all be wrong.
The correct part details that you've posted will certainly help others out in the future.
Andrew.

Re: Alternator light..
Check put the rear light fixings. I'f they've cracked then you'll get all kinds of electrical problems but it does sound like the alternator.
There's lots of parts advertised incorrectly, starter motors, 2.8i fuel filters, 2.0 air filter elements, 3 litre discs, alternators.
Even brake pad fitting kits can be incorrectly listed, 2.8i ones should have longer pins.

Except the ones which still work off well-thumbed huge books covered in oil stains - or where the proprietors know the part number off the top of their head!Andrew 2.8i wrote:Hi,Major_Tom wrote:Word of warning... The moral of the thread:
If you want the correct part, use a specialist supplier instead of the big-name factors.
