Edd China Capri

Post by MS Injection »

Edd China has been doing some videos on You Tube called Ask Edd. In his latest one, in answer to a question about cars he wants to do, he said he wanted to revisit the Capri as the one they did wasn't good. He suggested a Mk1 here, but anything will be good in my view. Watch this space I guess.....

I gotta say something thats probably going to offend many on here.....

I dont like the MK1 Capri.

There i said it! Pitchforks and rotten fruit have at it! lol

But seriously, i just dont see the appeal, the MK2/3's are so much better looking in my opinion, but yes seeing him do one up (even if it is the inferior MK1 :P) would be a joy to watch.

It will be interesting to see him do another Capri.
On what show though? Obviously it won't be wheeler dealers, but as far as I know, a new show hasn't yet been announced.
Apologies if it had been mentioned in the You Tube video, but I haven't watched it.

Hi Andrew,

He hasn't got a show yet, but the way he has been talking, it's just a matter of time before he chooses what he will be doing, where and who with. I did intend to post a link to the video, but watched it on the You Tube app and it won't seem to give a web link from that.

Cheers

MK2's are basically the same as MK3's in every way, apart from some different headlights and tail lights and a slightly different bonnet and front valance, so i cant dislike them when they are so similar. (still prefer mk3's though ;) )

Thanks for letting me know, it will be something to keep an eye out for in the, hopefully near, future.

I also like the mk2. They also seem to be the rarest of all the Capris.

Actually you are right now that you mention it! We think of all Capri's being rare by default (because they are) but you certainly dont see as many MK2's compared to the others.
Wonder why that is?

Maybe it's simply because the mk2 had the shortest production run ('74-'78) when compared to the mk1 ('69-'74) and the mk3 ('74-'86). Therefore not as many would have been sold.
Anyone know any better?

The Mk2 did have the shortest run.
Mk1 : 14 ( Cologne ) -16 ( Dagenham ) December 1968 - December 1973
Mk2 : Switched over sometime between December 1973 and January 1974 - December 1977
Mk3 : December 1977 - 19 December 1986 ( 30 November 1984 for LHD Capris )
Also it can be said that until recently they were the least desireable mark, however now the prices have risen to be pretty much on par with other marks.

They also rotted more, and more quickly, than standard for Capris, so I'm told by the couple of Mk2 owners tha I know. So I guess smallest run, excessive rotting, and nobody wanting them back in the day was a perfect storm?

I think the Mk2 suffered unfairly from the 'last year's model' syndrome as soon as the Mk3 came out, in a way that never happened when the Mk2 replaced the Mk1.

I think it was probably because the Mk3 was seen as an improved, facelifted version of the same car rather than something different and this seemed to be made worse because generally the majority preferred the look of the Mk3 styling. I remember in the early 80's it was quite common to see Mk2 cars that had been updated by their owners to some extent, sometimes blacked out bumpers, other times with Mk3 lights and grilles and the odd Mk3 S stripe. I remember hearing of several Mk2 cars that had suffered front end accident damage being repaired with Mk3 bonnets and wings as the cost was similar.

My Mk2 hasn't had any major rust but the well known rust trap on the heater bubble which has some rubber sound deadening on it, water gets trapped underneath and it rusts out, i managed to save it and not require welding as there were no major holes, just corrosion.
That being said since it's been here in Spain since 1980 it's no surprise that it doesn't have any major rot, just a few paint bubbles here and there, i looked under the carpets one day and it's solid as a rock, i had the car up on a lift last week too and no rot to be found.

Mk2s always have seemed to be the ugly duckling of Capris, but in the past few years they have gone up a lot in price, a good Mk2 3.0 Ghia nowadays i find will se you back roughly as much as a Mk3 3.0S, i'm glad they are starting to be appreciated like they should.

As Mike says, they were prone to rotting away more than most it seems. Someone did tell me once that it was due to the manufacturing locations.

Shocking, but I suppose a lot depends on the usual factors of how the car was used and cared for, and whether it was garaged or not.

Undoubtedly Andrew. He was, and still is, meticulous in caring for his cars and would clean and dry it after salty roads and rainstorms (though he didn't have a garage to keep it in). It was 2 years old when he bought it mind, so couldn't speak for the first owner! The Ziebart didn't help it a great deal either. It rotted more quickly than his previous car, a secondhand Mk3 Cortina, and than his P6.

Hi Mike,
Sorry if my earlier post read as if I was having a go at your Dad, it was not intended to be that way.
I'm sure you'll agree though that even a small stonechip in the paint can quickly turn into a serious rusty spot if not attended to.

The mk3 probably wasn't much better than the mk2 at keeping the rust at bay. Looking back through old CCI magazines, it would appear that some cars were showing signs of deterioration after only five or so years.
