Re: Smokey engine
See my thread on replacing valve stem seals, changing them on my Essex reduced oil consumption to pretty much Zero, any oil will be just a band aid fix, it's not that hard, or expensive to do if you have basic knowledge of your engine.

They are pretty much one of the best things ive ever done to the car. Now i can start it up in a car park and not be worried or embarrassed that im gonna create a huge plume of smoke and make everyone point and laugh, or that the wind is gonna blow it all back into the cabin which has happened a few times.Not_Anumber wrote:+1 for the positive effect of changing valve stem oil seals

Re: Smokey engine
Apologies for dragging up an old thread, but I currently have the head off my pinto and have a set of VR top hat stem seals to fit. They do not seem to locate in a very positive manner on the head, do I need to give them a helping hand with a hammer and socket? Can't believe that they are just held in place by the valve spring pressure?

Mr B wrote:Got to be honest here, I'm prepared for the backlash I may get for saying this but I run all my cars on unleaded and I've never had a problem, I don't use any lead substitute in the petrol, I periodically check all the valve lash and touch wood I've had no issue's
Same for me, just unleaded with no additive, driven like that for years now. I always figured that if I did have an issue, I would sort the head then, with the money I've saved from not using additive (that stuff seems very expensive), and if there are no issues then I'm quids in.Mr B wrote:

Re: Smokey engine
That's the benefit of them - the valve springs mean they can't go anywhere whereas standard seals can rise up the valve stems - they shouldn't of course but it happens.Cosmicbike wrote:Apologies for dragging up an old thread, but I currently have the head off my pinto and have a set of VR top hat stem seals to fit. Re: Smokey engine
So no hammer then, just the valve springs holding them.Peter-S wrote:That's the benefit of them - the valve springs mean they can't go anywhere whereas standard seals can rise up the valve stems - they shouldn't of course but it happens.Cosmicbike wrote:Apologies for dragging up an old thread, but I currently have the head off my pinto and have a set of VR top hat stem seals to fit. Re: Smokey engine
I have done it without a compressor but it is so much easier with one so, yes, get one. And yes, 8 seals.andy007007 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 06, 2021 8:30 am I want to change mine, so just to be clear i need to buy a Valve Spring Compressor Kit and does it have 8 Valve stem oil seals

Re: Smokey engine
since then, some place told me 12 needed ?
Re: Smokey engine
Yes, if you`ve got an Essex V6 then you will need 12 as it has 12 valves.
