Anyone got a 2.8i turbo technics?

Post by shaynes »

I've got a 2.8i turbo technics (high output low compression version I believe).
NB: I'm not a mechanic by any stretch, I just drive the thing.

I have an issue with some oil coming up the dipstick at high revs (just a bit).
There is no sign of engine wear, no smoke, stacks of power, runs like a dream.

The dipstick has currently got a rubber sleeve and nut in it to stop the oil coming up.
It was like that when I bought it and has been like it for 3 years or so since I can't find
a better solution. It's probably not a great idea though.

The first thing I did was get it checked by turbo technics but they had no suggestions
other than a new turbo might fix it. (might wasn't enough to justify the expense).
Two garages have failed to find the problem.

I started considering an oil catcher but fear that's just masking the issue.
The oil filler cap hose just vents to ground which seems odd, is that the same on anyone else's?

I spoke to another ex-owner at a show and he had the same problem, not sure if that's good or bad.

Any ideas appreciated!

Thanks
Steve

Hi Steve,

I won't pretend to be an expert on the 2.8 turbo, but I think there should be a small pipe coming from the drivers side valve cover that goes to a connection on the side of the plenum chamber, the valve cover end of the pipe is connected to a pcv valve which pushes into the valve cover, this vents fumes/blow by from the engine to the intake manifold, does your car have this?

As above, i am no TT expert but lets start with it certainly sounds like nothing to worry about. I know tuned Pinto's like to breath heavy and need a catch can with breather so maybe that is the solution?

Thanks for the replies...

RE: does your car have this?

Yes and the valve seems ok, that said I might replace it just for the hell of it.

I'm leaning towards giving it to turbo technics to do a turbo refurb and completely
check it out. (ie: just throw money at it).

And if that fails then an oil catcher.
And if that fails then stick a corvette engine in it. (Kidding...probably..)

I've go to do something, a small oil leak has appeared and I'm concerned it's down to
pressure (and especially with the bung in the dipstick).

I am no expert in this field. Capri, turbo, 2.8 engine, or anything like that...... But If the crankcase/sump/bottom end (whatever you like to call it) is pressurising enough to blow oil out the dipstick that 'could' suggest piston ring and/or cylinder bore wear couldn't it.
I stand to be corrected

Sorry, just re-read your post and you clearly state you have NO signs of engine wear.
Il keep quiet
