Think there's someone called Dom Capri or something like that. Cornwall way I think. Was a few years ago but I'm sure he started doing this conversion and a few mods along the way. Haven't heard anything for at least a year now tho.
To be honest... I may have dreamt it ha

Ime looking to do an engine swap in another rwd car and the only thing that puts me off using a Zetec is when i see the hundreds people seem to end up spending on carbs or specialist injection setup & ancillaries. Im more inclined to go the 2.9 V6 route as is straightforward to reuse the donor injection system and ECU.
Happy to be contradicted here but Ive seen some very successful 2.9 conversions that didnt cost a lot to achieve but have never yet heard of an affordable Zetec conversion.

Funny my son is in the process of doing this conversion and hopefully should be going in the car this summer.
Its going into a Pinto engined car. This is an easier conversion because of silly little bits and pieces like the crossmember and power steering etc on a 2.8.
The engine is a Focus ST170 and is in the garage just waiting to go on a stand.
He has got the throttle bodies from DanST and the ME221 engine management.
Exactly the same set up as in this vid.
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_ ... e221+zetec
The flywheel arrived the other day from MKF engineering to mate the engine to the type 9 gearbox.
He has got a rear bowl sump from Silver Top 2.0 Mondeo which we believe will do the job with little or no mods.
Other things to consider which he is currently sorting.
Exhaust manifold , there are a couple of companies out there but they do crop up on e-bay every now and again from people abandoned projects.
Water rail, however some people say because the engine bay on the Capri is quite large you can get away with just "massaging" the bulkhead to clear the thermostat.
You will need to sort out alternator mounting and drive pully (there are a couple of options) also you will need a belt tensioner.
Engine mounts which need to be fabricated-there are kits out there.
Fuel tank from a 2.8 or a standalone replacement from somewhere like Rally Design as you need a swirl pot.
Fuel Pump and pressure regulator.

The costs do mount up and the engine in reality is actually one of the cheapest bits.

We are in Essex :)

Nice one sounds awesome didn't think of fuel tank for the swirl pot I'm Gona use a bike pump purely cause it's cheaper and I don't need a regulater with it I've bought a 2.0 x member 8.50 off the bay just incase thinking because it sits forward a couple inches forward (the 2.8)might be better I've found to systems on eBay same company that run the vvt on 1 box and the engine on another about£450 for the pair which I thought was fair

How olds ya son I'm only 24 meself when I get some progress made more then welcome to come have a look

I haven't found a sumo yet guessing I'll copy you on that one I bought a st170 manifold 4-2-1 going to put a Y on it with a bend running backwards bought a standard zetec flywheel to trade in for a ready one are you going type 9 or rx8 ?

He 26.
Hes had the car since he was 17 and learnt to drive in it.

The flywheel was £160 outright with no exchange req'd.
Its bolting on to the type 9 thats in the car.
If you look at the ratios on the RX8 box I think the drive ratio on 6th gear is the same as the type 9 5th so basically you are only gaining an extra gear in the middle ratios.
He went for the ME221 ECU because it is basically plug and play.
He was looking at cutting and shutting a ST170 manifold but I think he is just keeping an eye out on e-bay for a RWD one and if not he will bite the bullet and get 1 new...Just for the ease of fitting.
I expect the engine is going on the stand over the weekend so things like the wiring loom, sump and alternator can be sorted before he gives it a coat of paint.
I know he spends time on a Zetec RWD forum and gets tons of advice and ideas from there

I'll stick some piccies up when there is any progress.

That's the system I see me221 does the plug and play and a separate one for vvt I've only had mine 5 years maybe 6 , I'm grabbing a engine come payday sorted a 60k one from a guy that's pulling it out once the mot runs out lol

Yeah rx8 is simila ratios only difference is the price I've not got a type 9 any more sold it to a mate couple years ago £50 :banghead: where abouts did you get your fly wheel ? Think I've found em at 140 but need to return one

Hi Mate.

It's me the son who is doing the conversion chipping in.

If you are planning to run bike carbs; you will not need a swirl pot, that is only if you are planning to run injection.
I'm using bike throttle bodies as opposed to bike carbs. That's why i'm using the ME221 as it can handle 4cyl injection and VVT in one.

If you are planning to go the carb route you can get away with a megajolt (or similar) and the VVT controller on the side.

The flywheel I have is this one here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ZETEC-RWD-FLY ... SwIgNXji0L
It will bolt right up to the ST170, though you will need flywheel bolts from a silvertop or blacktop as they are a bit shorter.
That flywheel will let you use an original pinto clutch, starter and release are; no spacers necessary.

Grab as much as you can of the engine as you can, it saves buying silly little bits like connectors, plus you can sell the bits off and make some $$ back.

If you are on facebook, check out this group, loads of people putting zetecs into RWD cars: https://www.facebook.com/groups/169461016471131/
There is also a guy on there making nice water rails for £125 if you do want to ditch the original thermostat.

If there are any other questions you have post up here and i'll get my dad to pass them on.

Cheers for the info James I've not got fb causes arguments with the misses lol will get on me mates phone to have a look at that water rail , might go with throttle bodies instead of it only means one controller

The engine is comin complete I believe I've heard it running 60k £300 quid which I didn't think was too bad

Will keep in touch be good to see some pictures I'll try getting some up when I get started

Hi it's James. Thought I'd log in this time.
I have a few, i fitted it to the engine the other weekend.
It looks like a bit of modification to the oil pickup is needed. Also need to get some spacers so the windage tray fits.

I can't directly upload ok images here from my phone and in away for the weekend. If you have WhatsApp pm me your number and I'll send them over.
Also i can send your what tweaks i made to the coil pack bracket to get it to mount under the inlet.
