offered cash

Post by simon »

hi everyone , ive been out in my gold 3.0 ghia today and on the way home I was followed by a bmw 4x4 with 3 guys in it 100 yards away from my garage and the driver said that's a nice car and offered me £7500 for it outside my garage, and that he was from Manchester and was down this way to buy a number plate and was looking for a 2.8 I or 3.0 to had to his collection with his escorts . My wife said its not for sale and I said to him to give me his phone number in case I decided to sell it to him I would call him. is this a fair offer as me and the wife think its worth more and we wouldn't sell it anyway.

Hi Simon,
It's great that your car is attracting praise and attention! :D
However, for me, alarm bells are ringing about the manner in which you were approached.
I may be over-reacting, but could the 3 guys in the BMW be on a reconnoiter mission to gather information?
I do hope I'm wrong.

Those were my thoughts exactly! 3 mancs in a BMW.... I`d be keeping an eye on the garage - no actually I`d be parking it somewhere else for a couple of days! Like Andrew, I hope I`m wrong, but these things do happen and these are becoming valuable items.
£7500 is probably on the low side too, the way things are now.

I'm afraid I instantly thought the same as Andrew and Steve, without reading their replies first :(

Hello, had the same approach in answer to my advert for my gold 1.6GL. Offered cash and wanted my address. Now very wary of phoney "buyers"

I would also be suspicious. How many people does it take to buy a number plate? I would suggest making sure your Capri is well locked up with any additional security devices fitted.
Keep hold of that phone number and possibly the Reg number of the BMW in case anything happens :twak:

To be fair not all mancs are bad and BWW's should not be paired with robbers, but I would move my car just incase, pity they never saw me as I would sell my capri for that lol Image

Hi,
What genuine buyer would offer that sort of cash for a car they've only followed for 100 yards?
It doesn't stack up.
Plus, there are a lot of horror stories on the OSF stolen thread that begin this way...

I don't want to overly worry the OP, just be extra vigilant for strange activity.

hi Andrew I will be keeping a eye out just in case this turns into a horror story but I think they were ok as they where smartly dressed and they gave us there number . I have a few choices to make I can move the car , or take the wheels off . A few months ago my friend had the same problem he decided to take is wheels off then a few weeks later they broke into is garage and left the car . He sold is capri after this happened and was very upset. I do not like it that they now where my capri is but theres nothing I can do about that know , I have never been approached like this before and been offered money for my capri . just because you have been offered money for the car doesn't mean that they will steal it as its a lot of trouble to go through for a car unless they break it for parts .

Not when people can sell v5s and VIN plates on ebay....
If you can move it somewhere safe for a week or two, I would personally. Not being OTT, but .... better safe than sorry?

yes im thinking about taking it up to my mums but the only trouble is it would be left outside on a drive in all weathers , and if they did decide to come back the car would be safe . it seems that everyone is saying move the car but i can do that but for how long can you do it for.

Like Andrew, I do not want to cause worry. Unfortunately, I reacted the same way before reading follow up posts. Just keep an eye on it.

I personally vary my route to and from home every time, and if I see a car following behind me, I carry on around until they go away. Wherever possible, I wait for the road to be clear before putting the car away.

Hi Mike,
That's exactly what I do. Sadly, in this day and age you can't be too careful.

hi everyone thanks for the replies and advise but just a thought , im sure there s a lot of people with capris out there in garages that people now about and see but never get asked if there cars for sale, how would anyone now if your capri was on some ones hit list to be stolen .The trouble only begins when someone shows some interest, then we all can think the worst might happen but it might never happen at all . its made me realize to be very carefull when on the road and to check to see if im being followed. In my situation the bmw was coming from the opposite direction about 200 foot away and when I turned right he turned left to follow, but I didn't see him in my mirror as I had turned right again after 30 feet into the garages then he was at the back of me and my wife was opening the garage door by this time so this was bad luck I guess .Next time we will wait in garages before opening the garage door or drive straight on and do a check .

Hi Simon, I've read your initial post and all the comments, and I do think that you don't have to worry on this occasion. It seems geniune enough, and if someone has got their eye on your car then you are unlikely to know about it, let alone have them come up to you and offer their phone number! It is very easy to be scare mongered. I've lost count the amount of times that I have been approached or followed, one guy offered (too enthusiastically for my liking) to buy my car whilst at a petrol station, I've been followed to where I keep my car and stopped for a chat, these things happen a lot. Yes, it's all quite unnerving, but aside from doing what you can to avoid the worse happening, such as the steps you are taking, then that's it really. Too much worry will spoil your enjoyment of having it. Be sensible, be as secure as you feasibly can, then you've done what you can, and enjoy. Just my thoughts. Good luck!

Hi Paul,
We all hope you're right and probably being a bit over cautious here. Having had a car stolen when I was younger I tend to be very wary now. It was quite a horrifying experience when the reality kicked in that as much as I looked around the car park the car had gone :crying:

All the best
Neil
