power steering

Post by snizeldelabmx »

Hello,
I recently broke my steering rack, I sent it to repair (to several places) but there is nothing to do they sayed.
Does someone know where can I get a new one or where can I get a refurbished one? I would like a place that doesnt demand my old unit, as I am in spain and the shipping to send the old one is quite a lot.

thank you,

Regards,

Sam

Hi,
You don't need to send an exchange unit,, it just means that you'll pay more. I think the Capri Club charge £70 if you don't exchange your old unit. It would not cost that much to post your rack to the UK.

The Capri Club, Caprigear and Tickover should be able to supply a new power steering rack and should be willing to post it overseas.

All the best,
Andrew.

Hello Andrew,

Tickover sayed they need the old one.
I am waiting the reply from CCI.
Thank you,

The shipping costs me arround 50 euros, and to get 70 punds off, I prefer keeping it as a spare, although they couldnt fix it, they left the new gaiters, and seals.

An other thing that is going through my mind, is that here in Spain the catalogues are in metric, and my rack is a RHD one, could it be possible that the RHD rack seals are in inches? that would explain the guy saying he couldnt find a seal to fit it.

thank you,

Regards,

Sam

Hi Sam,

Just to confirm...... Do you have a UK spec car which is Right Hand Drive RHD or Spanish spec which would be Left Hand Drive LHD?

And are you sure you have power steering on your Cabaret model?

I'm not sure you'd have much luck using the UK for a LHD rack, you might be better off contacting a specialist in Germany.

I don`t know specifically but yes, many of the other parts fitted go right back to 1968 and are still in imperial sizes so that`s quite possible. Seals often have the 3 dimensions moulded in the edge, Internal D. external D, & depth.

Hi Neil,
The car had been imported from the UK and is RHD.

Hi,
I'm sure I saw an online company selling an overhaul kit for the Capri power steering rack. I can't find the website at the moment, but I'll report back if I do find it. The Ford Workshop Manual (the orange one) explains how to overhaul the rack. It doesn't look like a 5 minute job though...

Hi,
I found these places online. It might be worth giving them a call for information if you want to refurbish your own rack, or even buy a s/h rack and refurbish it before fitting it to your car.

Thanks guys,

Yes the car is a RHD, and it had a power steering conversion done by the previous ower.

Yesterday I opened up the rack, and its quite badly worn. The bearings that go in the pinion have plenty of playe due to the worn shaft.

I spoke to http://www.steering-racks.co.uk/spares/ but they need mine to recon.

Yesterday I contacted burton, and they say they have one in stock, so Im going to go for it :drive:

hopefully I could get her running for august :headscratch:

Thanks for you help guys!!!
