Re: Black 2.8 project
Hi,
This is looking really good and will be one hell of a nice car when it is finished.
I like your attention to detail on some of the fiddly bits.
All the best with the rest of the build.
Andrew.

Re: Black 2.8 project
An update is probably a bit over due but things have been a bit mundane - all the fiddly bits where you spend more time looking for the correct size bolt or screw than you do putting stuff back together! Anyway, I had hoped to be done for Bomber Run in April but missed that by miles so next target CRaP this coming weekend.Things stalled with a cylinder head problem mentioned elsewhere but that seems sorted so dug the interior out of the office basement and gave it a bit of a scrub. Really it needs some new foam but that can wait for now.

So with time ticking away it was a case of getting everything working smoothly but had a problem with the metering head. Got a part from Martin to sort that but then the starter motor failed Tickford Man to the rescue and with one free weekend to finish things I booked an mot for today. Test drive in the farm across the road and the brakes are starting to seize on the more I use them and there is a rattle from the clutch that I'm not happy with. Back in the garage and I find that full steering lock makes one of the joints leek steering fluid.
Monday night I had the half shafts out and replaced the bearings but other stuff didn't get finished especially as I decided to order a new clutch. So, mot cancelled, CRaP in the other Capri and next target Brooklands 45th in September!

Q plate???? What's the story with that car Peter?
Don't wana worry you, have you checked the premiums? I had a q plate escort and they wanted three times the premium to insure it many years ago. Is this car a reshell?

Re: Black 2.8 project
Believe it was probably reshelled in 1987! I should be able to get an age related plate on it once on the road. Already insured - £130 on a classic policy.Terra-Kotta wrote:Q plate???? What's the story with that car Peter?

Nice to see you now have an MOT and have done a nice job, on the rebuild.

Re: Black 2.8 project
I liked this thread Peter, and 2.8 jokes aside I like how it turned out. Also like how you tell it like it is not "oh I rebuilt this and it fell together" I have followed this thread from start to finish and you show all the fuck ups too. Real world stuff. Respect for that.
Not sure on the red and silver and all the colours going on underneath but we can excuse that as your midlife crisis. Look forwards to seeing this one at crap next year.
Now you have graduated will you be selling the faster car?

Re: Black 2.8 project
Often the little things that take the longest but I finally got around to getting in touch with DVLA about changing the registration. Took them three months to deal with it (allow four weeks they said!) but she'll now blend in with the crowd

Hey Peter,
Great work, it does some how lift the whole car!!! Just been reading through the history again, it really does deserve to wear the correct plate. Well done, cheers for now,
John...

Hi Peter,
What a result! As John says, the car just seems to look much more correct now.

Hi Peter,
Yep, as already said it really is a perfect compliment to all your hard work Peter to finally get an age related plate. It looks great. Nice one
Your 2.8i is really looking superb Peter. Credit to you for all your hard work and dedication. Only thing is Peter, I will have to remember your new number plate now as your "Q" plate was quite easy to spot before
All the best now
Nick

Re: Black 2.8 project
Seems a project is never quite finished and one of the things I was least happy with on this was the brakes. I'd already converted the 2.0 to Princess 4 pots and they had a much better feel than the vented 2.8 set up. In doing the 2.0 I had acquired a spare set of Princess caplipers which were sitting on the shelf so I stripped them down.
DSCF4501 by Peter Smith, on Flickr
The pistons weren't really up to much and they were a single disc set up so needed some more parts
DSCF4500 by Peter Smith, on Flickr
Biding my time I eventually came across an ebay listing for a complete set of new pistons, seals and almost new Mintex pads. Advertised as being for a TR8 there was no interest and I picked them up for £70 which wasn't too bad

New 257mm discs from Rally design

DSCF4531 by Peter Smith, on Flickr
Copper grease on the pads

New fitting kit
DSCF4532 by Peter Smith, on Flickr
The centre of the retainers was a tad too narrow and had to be ground down to fit around the discs
DSCF4534 by Peter Smith, on Flickr
All in place and ready to bleed
DSCF4535 by Peter Smith, on Flickr
Bleeding didn't go well and it was soon apparent that the old master cylinder wasn't up to the task. Unfortunately new cylinders aren't available but a little research revealed tha the slightly larger bore Granada cylinder fitted the servo so had to dip in to the piggy bank again. Old and new together
DSCF4537 by Peter Smith, on Flickr
Trial fit on servo
DSCF4538 by Peter Smith, on Flickr
and original reservoir attached
DSCF4539 by Peter Smith, on Flickr
I do find that bleeding this set up with the extra bleed nipples and crossover pipe can be a bit of a pita but I got there eventually and have been using the car for the last three months and I'm happy with the feel and performance of the brakes. They passed the MOT yesterday so seems all is well
