help my capri wont start

Post by stevepeanut »

Just got in from work, tired to start my capri to move it and it wont run. It starts for about 2 seconds then dies. If I give it a bit gas on and off the pedal it will run for a few secs, then die again. The fuel pump has been extremely loud since I bought it, whining all the time. Could it have finally given up? or is there anything else I can look at?

...a 2.8? If so then I would suspect pink relay under the dash first (controls the fuel pump). Try connecting a battery direct to the terminals of the pump, if the pump runs then try to start the car, if the engine runs the relay is at fault. If the pump does not run on direct 12v then it's knackered. If the pump runs but the engine doesn't, check the ignition, starting by checking for a spark at the plug leads and so on.

I was the fuel pump, as you said the pump has been making a loud noise, this is normaly an indicator that the pump is about to fail. it sounds like yours just has.

pump

I can still hear the pump making noise, but it doesn't sound very healthy. Dunno if its my ears, but it used to make a high pitch whine, now it sounds very low.

fuel

Post by stevepeanut »

hmmmm you might be right there. My speedo isnt working, so also no mile reading, so I dont know how many miles since I last filled up. Fuel gauge is reading just over the top of red. So tomorrow night I am gonna fill up a couple of fuel cans and put them in the car, got to be 100% sure the fuel is ok, before I mess with other things.

put some fuel in

Post by stevepeanut »

got 2 fuel cans, filled em up and put it in the car, still no good. Opened the bonnet to have a look in the air box as I was told there could be a sticking flap in there, and.... the top of the air box was not fixed on...

ie the 5 inch diameter circle bit, with jubilee clip. Rammed it back on, and the car fired up ok!!

haha this happened to me at work the other day

Post by Olly__C »

Id lent my capri to my dad, and something always seems to go wrong when he gets his hands on it

so it was no surprise when he rings me and says " your ******* car wont start, get over here and sort the **** out "

turns out the hose from the airbox had come loose, just as you said

it would start on the cold start valve, but as soon as that stopped the engine would cut out :)
