Post by rousecapri »

have had the car for 16 years

the old essex is long gone.....:(
i did put in another essex about 3 yrs ago but then though sod it i will have a v8 and sold the essex.
roll the clock forward to a couple of weeks ago...................
a car we had for breaking(only wanted the lsd axle) had a very hot 3.1 swaymar tuned essex.
sold off all the v8 bits...i am staying with the good old essex :)
Image
how she looked about 10 yrs ago

how she looked about 3 yrs ago
Image
how she is today ready and waiting for my loving hand :)
Image
i modded the battery tray about 3 yrs ago...moved it in to the inner wing
Image
modded the inner wing on the passenger side...she now has a metal vent in it
same will be done to the other side.....dont worry the vents are thicker than the original metal

she will be getting the 3.1 swaymar essex.....i have posted pics of some of the bits in q&a
i will get some more and post them on here
Image
polished bosch dizzy...that took a little while to do
Image
pic of the valves they are huge 46mm inlet and 41mm exhaust :)
Image
Image
vernier timing gear..........very rare.......swaymar part
Image
swaymar inlet manifold...for the 390 holley
Image
alloy rocker covers
will take some more pics as the work progresses
will be painted black(with full kat body kit)
deep red engine along with all suspension and runnig gear
underneath will be silver

small update.
Image
repair to the end of passenger sill.
Image
a-post ,had a couple of thin bits........so was cut out and replace with good steel......
Image
can you see the repair??????? it goes top to bottom
Image
all protected
Image
you can see the vents a bit better now they are painted
Image
n/s headlight bowl repair.
Image
Image
thats it for today..........................
have got to make up my mind weather to fit a new pattern wing :( or repair the original one....
the original one need's the drip rail replacing and a repair to the top corner by the door......
i can either spend 5 days trying to get a crap part to fit or a couple of days repairing the old original one....no brainer really..........original one wins.....pattern part will supply the bits needed to repair the original one :)

A lot of the project threads are that way. Just take comfort from the fact that people are looking :)
Nice work btw, maybe we'll see it on the road this summer 8-)

Yeah the vents do look good :)

Scrap yards are lots of fun :)

Had to get a exhaust for my old :ford: KA (First car when I passed was all I could afford!)
4 cars high was right at the top, forklift comes over to get it down for us, drops the bloody thing! 3 metres away from us!
Exhaust was still in perfect condition. :D
I could walk round the scrap yard for hours poking around and being nosey

scrap yard hunt went well..................
found nearly £10 in coins (£5 came out of two bmw's)
got a battery cable from a bmw 325 tourer (complete with the little junction box)
got a brand new ali rad from a 520 (its the same size as the essex rad but made from aluiminum insted of brass/copper so should be good enough.
got a couple of header tanks,a toggle switch(about £8 from halfrauds) loads of bulbs, fuses etc....
a trembler/cut off switch from a renault(in the event of a bump they trip out cutting power)will be wired in to the electric fuel pump....just in case
a few hoses
found 3 screw drivers (one was a rachet type)
total cost £25.....minus the £10 i found so i think i did well............ all that for £15 :)
i will be going back in a couple of weeks for another rummage.......as you do

started to sort out the rad.
wanted a bit more room in front of the engine so i cut the original rad mounts out.
Image
Image
the nail is only holding the rad in place along with the red bit at the bottom of the rad................
Image
the ali rad is a little bit bigger than the original essex rad.....so hopfully it will be good enough?
there is a header tank going under the n/s/f wing with a bleed taken off the thermostat housing so any air should end up in the header tank and not the rad
will put on a large electic fan on to the rad wired so it switches on off the rad sender unit and also with a manual bypass inside the car(very easy to do)
the front has also been modded so all the air has to go through the rad and not round/under or over it(all been done in metal)
any holes in the metal work will be filled in or plated over so the entire engine bay is smooth.............that includes the slap panel(the chassis plate is going to be moved)
where can i get a new one made up from as the original is getting a bit rough?
