Queen Square, Bristol, February 2017.

Post by Andrew 2.8i »

Hi Everyone,

Here are some photos from our the recent gathering at Queen Square on a dry, but very cold, February morning.
I think the cold weather and a major classic car show on the same day in nearby Shepton Mallet put off some people, but not us! Still, there was enough to see (if you got there early  ) to make the trip worthwhile.

Firstly, the view of The Square as Nick, John and Danny will remember it! :)

Image

Here's Danny's great Laser on it's first, and hopefully not the last, visit. Still looking remarkably shiny despite the long drive in poor weather.

Image

Here's John's car, also looking stunning and rocking it's new black grille look.

Image

Two other 2.8s that are regulars here.

Image

Image

A Nice mk1 3000GT.

Image

Two stunning Cortinas.

Image

Image

An eye-catching Escort mk1.

Image

Fiesta 1.1L.

Image

Another regular at this meet is this Anglia.

Image

Here some modern Mustangs. I have to say that I really like the latest model.

Image

A slightly older Shelby GT500.

Image

And another.

Image

One of my favourites, a Citroen CX. Unfortunately, this one is a dies... I can't even bring myself to type the word.....but it's still a fantastic futuristic design even after all these years.

Image

I really like to see cars that were common, but are now quite rare, like this brilliant Lada 1500.

Image

Also this Volvo 340. This one had the interior stripped out, I assume for drifting or something similar?

Image

As they've been in the news recently, it's only right to include some Vauxhalls. A Cav SRi.

Image

A Mk2 Estate.

Image

The Calibra V6 looks good when compared with Vauxhall's current designs.

Image

a VXR8, a rebadged Holden HSV.

Image

Citroen AX GTi pocket rocket.

Image

Is the Fiat Coupe Spider a modern design classic?

Image

Or the Honda 2000?

Image

Now onto some real British icons, a Jaguar Series III Sovereign.

Image

I never used to like the XJS, but they are growing on me now.

Image

The best Jag was this XJC.

Image

Unmistakeable P6 Rover, this one was the V8.

Image

Crayford didn't just convert Fords you know. Although knowing how much the Mini Cooper S is worth nowadays, perhaps they wouldn't have been so quick to wield the angle grinder!

Image

Image

Triumph 2000.

Image

The Germans invaded the meet this month. There were some nice classics, like this Mercedes 190E.

Image

One of the hot hatches to have back in the day, the Golf GTi 16V.

Image

Even better was this '83 mk1 Golf.

Image

VW Golf Caddy.

Image

Porsche 944 Turbo.

Image

This Mercedes 400 SEL is 90's excess at it's best!

Image

VW Variant.

Image

BMW 5 series E28.

Image

Not my cup of tea, these cost £144,000 to buy new, and certainly 544 BHP has to be respected...

Image

Back to the German classics, a Golf cabriolet.

Image

Nice little Polo G40 coupe.

Image

I'm not a fan of rat cars, but you do have to admire the small personalised modifications. These cars always seem to draw a crowd though, so some people must be into them.

Image

As usual for this meet, there were some great American pick-up trucks. A '50 Chevrolet Advance Design.

Image

A '55 Ford F-100 V8.

Image

Chevrolet AK.

Image

Not one of the classics, it has to be said, but this Corvette added to the variety of cars.

Image

There's always seems to be an American land yacht at this meet, and this month it was a Chrysler LHS.

Image

Now onto some British sportscars of various ages. A TVR 350i, these are generally known as "wedges". I'm not sure why.... :)

Image

A McLaren MP4-12C.

Image

A new McLaren 650S spider.

Image

An Esprit GT3.

Image

A rare 1948 Lea-Francis Sports.

Image

Aston DB11 V12.

Image

Vantage V12.

Image

Generally, I'm not a fan of modern cars, but Ferrari still design some stunning cars, like this 458 Italia. I think I'd prefer one in red though.

Image

I also wouldn't turn down either of these Porsche 911s.

Image

Image

One of the most wonderfully named cars ever? I give you the Cedric.

Image

Another wonderfully named Jap, a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X GSR FQ-400. In case you didn't know what FQ stands for, the Q means quick.....

Image

I'll end with the two best cars of the meet together.

Image

Well, that's that for another month. I hope you all enjoyed looking through the photos, and I really hope that John, Nick and Danny weren't put off from coming again in the future.
Maybe in the Summer?

All the best,
Andrew.

Thanks Andrew,
As you said there was a big event at Shepton Mallet so that may have had an effect, or just the fact it was Brass Monkeys

Always plenty of variety at this event, brings back a lot of memories from the 70's/80's and more recent.

Love the new Mustang, and I would prefer that over the new Focus RS at similar price.

Hi Andy,
This is definitely my favourite meet for bringing out those classics that you just don't see much of these days.
I wasn't expecting to see much this month, it is February after all, but QS never disappoints.

A friend of mine went to the Footman James show at Shepton, I'll have to ask him if was any good or not.

Hi Andrew,

Brilliant pics as ever mate. Thanks for posting them. Hang on min...I was there too....where did all these great cars come from

Jeepers Danny will be cursing me when he sees these as it was his first outing to Queen Square too ! John has been a couple of times so he wont mind so much

Anyway Andrew, great pictures of Johns Special and Danny's Laser. Was great to meet up with Danny and great to get a ride again in Johns Special. I remember seeing the Escort mate....but sadly that had gone by the time we parked up :? Saw the Anglia on its way out of the square too....oh dear ! Anyway great pictures Andrew of some lovely classics. I can see why its very popular now I seen Queen Square for myself albeit very similar to your first picture  Considering the wet and freezing conditions this meet still packs a punch with the turnouts. Already looking forward to the next trip to Bristol...early doors !!

Cheers Andrew

Quality pictures, the first one is all too accurate of my memory of the day!! Glad I made top of the pile though haha!

Also my dad now wants to come along as he loves the look of the Escort and the Mk1 so looks like I'll end up going in March too!

Was a good day there, love that Vette and the Esprit, just wish I'd got there early enough to have a proper look at them...

Hi Nick,
I look forward to seeing you again at QS in the future. Just don't forget your wallet next time....
You really were unlucky last time, as I think that folks were leaving early as it was too cold to be hanging around. Had you turned up at that time any other month, there would have been plenty to see.

Hi Danny,
It's a special reward as you came all that way and didn't get to see any cars!
I'm glad your experience hasn't put you off coming again though.

Cheers Andrew, I feel a little bit better now mate. We were really only an hour behind our scheduled to meet up  so it was a tad sad that the square was emptying as we arrived, but yes it was extra cold. Was still worth the journey though as these little meets we set up are great just to catch up with other members in the flesh...you have aged very well since Beaulieu old chap :)

I definitely want to get over in the Capri though hopefully if John and Danny will have me  Kris has shown interest in this too so hopefully we might get a few especially too if Neil, Mark, Rob and yourself bring your Capri's. Wow that would be superb !! and as John pointed we could gate crash the Monument in the centre of the Square and park up around that...now that would be ultra cool 8-) Capri's rock !!

All the best mate,

Nick

Just seen this, I'm away at moment & havn't had much time to see forum. I'd definately like to bring the Capri to this meet later in the year & meet up with other :ford: fans :)
Cheers Andrew for adding the extra pictures. Looking forward even more now to going to this meet.
