Classics in Cardiff
Hi,
Last weekend I went to the show Classics in Cardiff held, funnily enough, in Cardiff. What are the chances?
It was quite a big show, probably the biggest in the area, and around 600 various classics were on display. Here are photos of some highlights for your pleasure.
Where better to start than the Capris?
A 2 litre V4 Mk1 GT XLR in tawny dark gold.
Gorgeous 1.6 Mk1.
A 1600GT XL in red.
Wonderfully original condition 2.0GL.
And a modified 2.0 Laser.
And this one was there...
A pair of immaculate XR2s. I think I prefer the red to the white, but ask me again tomorrow and I may have changed my mind. Again!
A well presented (I sound like an estate agent!) Sapphire Cosworth.
This XR4i was nice to see.
This is something a little different. A Mk2 Granada 3.0 GLE with an Essex fitted. It was a model for the South African market, and the owner has had it from new.
Mk3 XR3i. As you can see, not in perfect condition, but nice to see as they are getting scarce.
This 1.3L in amazing condition also deserves a mention.
I loved the colour of this RS2000.
And this yellow Mk2 Mexico.
This rally prepared Escort had the Honda VTEC that seems to be a popular conversion with the rally boys.
A couple of earlier RS2000s. How much are these worth nowadays?
Series 1 RS Turbo. I'm not keen on the rally wheels though.
It was great to see this Astra GTE, although this was an 8v, not the 16v.
Oh look, a 5 GT Turbo. This one was in stunning condition.
As was this 205 GTi 1.9.
Lancia Delta Integrale.
A classic car show wouldn't be complete without an E-type or two. It's still a beautiful car, even after all these years.
On the subject of classic Jags, the XK140 also is very elegant.
A pair of Aston Martins, a V8 Vantage and a DB5.
Talbot Lotus Sunbeam. I really like these.
Timeless understated style. Not like the ostentatious stuff they produce nowadays.
More classic style with this Daimler Sovereign.
Limited edition Bentley Mulsanne Turbo RT.
Mercedes 300SL.
A pair of beautiful classic Lancias. A Fulvia...
And this 2000 GTV.
I haven't seen a decent 126 for a long time.
Bright green BMW Isetta.
Rover 75. Totally factory standard, from what I could tell....
I had to put in this photo of a Mk1 MR2, as it's a beauty.
However, I wasn't a fan of this MR2 Roadster with Porsche Carrera lookey-likey bodykit.
Gorgeous fastback Mustang.
I haven't seen one of these before, it's a Chrysler SSR pick up.
I like the Trans-Am, especially with the iconic hood emblem.
Plymouth Road Runner.
Corvette C3.
I must confess to really liking the 80's Camaro.
Custom Ford Model A.
1950's Chevrolet Bel Air.
Buick Skylark.
Celica GT-Four rally car.
Another rally car, a mid-engine Renault 5 Turbo 2.
I'm a fan of the Esprit, especially if it's the V8.
A pair of rats. A Lexus and a Mad-Max style Pontiac. The sign says "Hands off or lose them" Needless to say, I didn't feel the need to touch!
A show in Wales wouldn't be complete without a Gilbern.
Rob (Freelanderfan) was at the show with his son Corey's Mini.
Timewarp classic, a Maestro 1.3L.
Honda Goldwing trike.
The battery cover on this Fiesta caught my eye.
That's all for now, I hope that you enjoyed looking through the photos.
Andrew.

Thanks, yes it is a good event, probably the biggest in the area. Some fantastic cars and hot hatches from the 80's glory days.
It was more like down then up! Wet in the morning, but it dried up beautifully by the afternoon. Unfortunately I did get a slight drip or two of water on the car!andyd wrote:Although it looks like the weather was up and down

Hi Andrew,
Many thanks for posting these. Really did enjoy this one, glad you took them as I didn't take a single picture as I've filled the memory on my phone .
Corey's chuffed with his car getting a mention too, cheers. I spoke with the owner & his wife of the stunning '55 Chevy and was amazed to learn that they had a '56 & a '57 as well, along with quite a few classic fords, a 1600E & pre injection XR3 amongst others. Not jealous at all .. It's great to chat to owners like the owner of the XR4i too who had saved if from a trip to the scrapyard 10 years ago & has been slowly performing a running restoration ever since. Both owners great people and happy to talk about their pride & joys. Enjoyed looking, will be back next year for this one.
All the best,
Rob

It's a fantastic looking car, and those classic Minis are as popular with the crowds as they've ever been, maybe even more so.
The couple with the Chevys and the classic Fords seem like they've got a car show all of their own. Fantastic!
I look forward to seeing another 2.8 at this show next year!
Andrew.

Thanks, I enjoy these shows and like to post photos for others to see what they've missed! It certainly is a great event for lovers of all classics, although a little short on Mk3 Capris, truth be told, as there were only the three shown.
Sounds great, Des. Do you have any photos of it to share? The 205 was one of THE hot hatches to have back in the day, and the press raved about them, didn't they?Bertie wrote:love the 205 GTI looks a little smasher and similar to one I had many years ago....

I think I have some in the loft I'll have a look when I get a min... Great hot hatch in the day, trouble is you had to watch it like a hawk so many were nicked and ragged
Re: Classics in Cardiff
An XR owner I know has a couple of 205 GTi's and a 309GTi too, really rare that one.
Never been in one tbh, it was always Fords or Vauxhall for me

Re: Classics in Cardiff
Hi,
Years ago, a friend of mine was in the market for a hot hatch, as he wanted to trade up from his MG Metro. We test drove a 205 GTI 1.6, and that was a vast improvement over the Metro. The same dealer also had a Corolla GTi (E80?) for sale so we drove that too. My mate chose the Corolla as the build quality of the car was far superior to both the MG and the Peugeot, and the engine had more get up and go. 127 BHP vs 115. No contest!

The Corolla was a quick car with a redline of 7000 rpm iirc....Looked at getting one last year but the AE82 is really thin on the ground nowAndrew 2.8i wrote: My mate chose the Corolla as the build quality of the car was far superior to both the MG and the Peugeot, and the engine had more get up and go. 127 BHP vs 115. They used to rust quite badly, if I remember correctly. Plus, they weren't the obvious choice back in the day, so they might not have sold loads of them. Shame, as they were a good car.

Yes, it was a decent show with a fairly good turnout of various classics. I must admit that I was pleased to see a DB5, as it's a beautiful car and one of my favourites. According to the Hagerty insurance valuation tool, they're worth a cool £650,000 in this condition, and up to £1M if concours!

Excellent photos, Andrew. Thanks for uploading.
It's great to see such a variety. It's really making me long to get myself to one again. It's been years.

No problem, I hope you enjoyed looking through them.
It won't be long to wait now until your own car is a star attraction at a classic show!
