Queen Square, Bristol March 2016

Post by Andrew 2.8i »

Hi All,
At last, I've managed to get to show! I was more excited than usual as it's my first one of the year.
As some of you may know, I really enjoy this meet and try to get to as many as possible. March's turnout of cars was exceptional, a real treat.
Here are some highlights.

Firstly, the Ford Capris. I've seen the grey Special around, but I haven't seen the other Special or the 3.0S before. All very nice cars.

Image

Image

Image

Now on to the other cars, in no particular order.
A very rare British supercar, the Spectre R42. Only 23 of these were ever made.

Image
Image

A very nice Volkswagen Golf GTi Mk1, the best of all the hot hatches.

Image

Talbot Lotus Sunbeam.

Image

A rare car these days, a Renault 5 GT Turbo. I would have preferred to see an unmodified one, but beggars can't be choosers...

Image

The "Purple Pain"! The engine is a V12 with 6 carbs. It was following behind me on the way home, but not for long. It's very loud, and very fast......

Image

I can honestly say I was chuffed to see a Sinclair C5 there.

Image

Lots of classic and modern Porsches were there, like this 911 rally replica.

Image

And this pair of stunners.

Image

Cheeky!

Image

There's always a good turnout of American muscle cars, this is an early Pontiac Firebird.

Image

This Firebird was stunning. I've just spotted the Lotus Carlton in the background. I missed that at the time, and didn't get a photo of it....

Image

Lovely pair of older Opels, a Manta.

Image

And this older Ascona.

Image
You don't see many of these around nowadays....

Image

Very unusual Colt Lancer Celeste. I love it!

Image

Now some more modern performance cars. Lotus Esprit Turbo, very attractive in this bright yellow.

Image

Lamborghini Gallardo.

Image

Jaguar D-Type replica.

Image

One of my favourite recent Japanese cars, the Honda Integra Type R.

Image

Pretty little Gilbern GT.

Image

And a massive Ford Super Duty pick up. There was a big crowd watching as the driver was trying to squeeze through a narrow gap with some very expensive cars parked either side of the road!

Image

Very nicely restored Transit Mk2 in German fire truck livery.

Image

Early Ford Thunderbird. I can just imagine driving down the highway, wind in my hair listening to Springsteen.....

Image

I'm not usually a fan of lettering on tyres, but I think it really suits this beautiful Cobra replica.

Image

How much must an RS500 be worth these days? This one had a mileage of around 37,000 and was immaculate, as far as I could tell.

Image

A good turnout of various Mustangs, old and new.

Image

Ford Lotus Cortina Mk1. What a stunning car, in all respects.

Image

A very nice Escort XR3i Cabriolet. It would have been even better with standard wheels, in my opinion.

Image
I've seen this Escort van with an RS2000 front on before, I thought I would post another photo, as it's been completed to a very high standard.

Image

Immaculate Escort Twin Cam. There is a similar one for sale in Bristol for £65,000!

Image

A replica of a vintage Alfa Romeo racing car.

Image

An Escort Cosworth. I like them, but they look a bit dated now.

Image

More stunning Fords, this time Escort RS Turbos.

Image

Image

This Escort RS1800 is absolutely immaculate.

Image

One of my all-time favourites, a BMW M3 E30.

Image

A very tidy, but plain-looking Escort Mexico.

Image

And how they should look, in my opinion.

Image

A Cortina Crayford conversion braving the cold morning.

Image

Talk about braving the cold, an Ariel Atom.

Image

A beautiful Alfa Romeo Spider. Does it come with Mrs Robinson in the passenger seat?

Image

Very nicely restored Fiat 500.

Image

I was hoping to see another one of these here today, and here it is, a DeLorean DMC-12.

Image

A pair of beautiful classic Citroens, a DS21.

Image

And a CX GTi Turbo. A very fast saloon car, for it's day.

Image

A few 50's American pick ups usually attend, this is a Chevrolet Advance Design (snazzy name).

Image

I like to see the big old American cars, like this Cadillac DeVille.

Image

An old Bristol 403.

Image

Something modern, but a bit different, a BMW with a scissor door conversion.

Hi Andy,
As always with this meet, there was a fantastic variety of cars, old and new. No CRX there as yet.....maybe at a meet in the summer?

I hope the great weather lasts as until May 1st at least! :D

Errrr no, unfortunately not. I wanted too, but during my pre-starting safety checks (I'm old school!) I noticed that there was a slight petrol leak from the fuel filter. With no time available to investigate, I had to hop in the daily driver instead.

It was still a good meet though!

Hi Andy,
You're leaving it a bit late, you're missing all the good weather.
I tax mine for 12 months at the start of March and return the tax at the end of October for a refund. That way, 8 months of use costs only a little more than buying only 6 months tax.

Hi Andrew,
Good idea that :) As you say I'm missing all the good weather and 99.9p fuel :banghead:

I was thinking earlier I haven't drove my own 'Classic Car' since last May when the Capri had its Janspeeds fitted..... :o :o
Apart from a couple of local trips/shows in Steve's RS Cabby in July I haven't driven anything remotely 'Classic'....That's shocking

Hi Des,
I'm pleased that you enjoyed looking through the photos.
The thing I like about this meet is the variety of cars. There's always loads of different cars there, old and new.

I wouldn't mind a Citroen DS 17/19/21.

All the best,
Andrew.

Careful Andy, that almost sounds like a firm commitment!

It would be great if you did go at some point in the future, I'd love to see your CRX in person. Presumably you won't be taking it to Beaulieu, so I won't get to see it there.

Hi Andrew,

Cracking Photo's there fella, a real treat to see. I wish I had know about this, as I would have popped over, I was out and about for a nice long drive in the Cappa on Sunday, wishing there was a Meet or Show I could nip along to!!!! I'm definitely interested in the next one or later in the Year, yes!!!

As I say, some great Pic's there Andrew and very hard to choose a favorite, but!!! I think I have... The Pontiac Firebird, Convertible!!! Wow!!! Also really happy to see you went back and snapped the Black Manta, Berlinetta I think it was, with the Added Side Skirts!!!??? All brings back the memories of yourself, Neil, Mark and myself lined up in the same Square last Year!!!! Cheers for sharing, keep um coming, all the very best,

John...

Yes, it was a very nice car, and there doesn't seem to be many 1st generation Firebirds around.
There were tons of other fantastic cars there, far too many to post photos of. The square was packed out from 8 in the morning.
The sunny weather made sure there was plenty to look at......and there were cars there as well!

All the best,
Andrew.

Hi Andrew,

What a great set of pictures! Nearly made this one but we were both out on Saturday, so had to miss it. It looked a great meet, it's got to be the most diverse car meet around & never disappoints. Can't pic a favourite but really like that forest green 3.0s. Would have been wary of standing near that Marina though in case of falling pianos .. :D

Cheers for posting, Rob.

I'd agree with that. I've been to regular classic car shows in the Bristol area and you don't see the cars there that turn up to this one. People must just enjoy meeting up for a few hours instead of having to give up a whole day. Also, the word must be getting around that it's a good meet, as that chap from Bridgend with the red Lotus Esprit was there. That's the first time I've seen him there.

That's why Corey likes it so much, you don't have to stay all day, & there's so much to see. That lotus is immaculate plus he's a Capri guy to boot. Hope the word doesn't get out too much though or we'll have to get there at 5:00 to park .. :D

I'd be up for it.

I actually live in Bristol and am ashamed to say this was the first time I'd managed to get down to Queens Square to check it out. It was a bit of a last minute thing, otherwise I would have tried to see who else might be going. I may have actually seen you there without knowing it.
