Quick question re the zinc plated fixings etc., did you use one of the DIY kits or get them done professionally?

I use a DIY kit I got from Gateros Plating on Ebay.
I have recently bought a bench power supply to use while plating. That produces a more consistent current than their suggested means of a battery charger and that makes the job easy.

Thanks Andrew, I’ve looked at the Gateros kits they look ok and have good reviews. I looked at a couple of others too but i suspect they’re all pretty similar really and the results are determined by the ability of the user more than anything. It’s definitely something I fancy doing, a lot of reproduction bolts etc. are available but it’s more satisfying to do jobs like this rather than simply buying new.

The Gateros kit is a good starting point for zinc plating. It might save a few pounds if you buy the essentials direct from their website (chemicals and zinc) and sourced the other parts of the kit from elsewhere if you don't already own them (PPE, sealable containers, power supply, copper wire etc). Some parts supplied in the kits like he air pump and heater aren't essential to the zinc plating process.
It's surprising what results can be achieved with zinc plating. For smaller items like nuts and bolts it's really quick and easy.
