oil spray bar replacement and change of oil grade
Hi chaps,
Last week I finally decided to try Valvoline Racing 20/50 engine oil after hearing of it being very good quality. Yep, I respect that everyone has there own ideas of what oil to use and this topic has been covered on numerous occasions, so I just really wanted to let you know what I decided to do so hopefully another debate on 'which oil' will not kick off
Before changing the oil and filter I decided to fit a brand new oil spray bar (thanks Martin @ Caprigear) as the original one has been there since I have owned B112 and its such a simple job I thought might as well fit a nice new one even though I do very regular oil changes. I will clean up the old one and keep it on the garage shelf. Anyway not much too say really. Rocker cover off then just three bolts to remove the bar. One thing I will say is that I did hear mention that there could well be a tiny rubber washer on the central/oil feed, although most say they have never seen one present with theirs. Well mine falls into the latter...it did NOT have a washer. As long as you fit the new bar properly once you tighten the bolt for this creates a very good tight fit. Just a couple of pics I took while I had the cover off...could not resist

While I had the rocker cover off, I gave the exterior a good clean and refitting it I used a new gasket, (again bought from Martin so knew it would be a decent one that fitted), and also fitted brand new bolts that I had bought and had stored in my bedside unit for about 2 yrs ! Looks good !
Job done and on Sunday afternoon I had a spare hour so brought B112 out for a decent drive and have to say it ran very well indeed. I did also slap a new dizzy cover on too so coupled with the recent addition of the Aldon Ignition I am really pleased with how the Pinto is running now. One thing I did notice is on cold start up, once it settles down on normal idle it does seem to sound nicer too so for me personally I am glad I decided to try 20/50, and Valvoline Racing was recommended by Dave (Smoke Em) so a big thanks to Dave !
Anyway not a very exciting/technical project but I hope you dont mind me sharing and another little job ticked off....now onto the weber 45's
All the best
Nick

Nick,
That is a very clean engine under the rocker cover! That is a good indication that it has been well maintained over the years a credit to you and the previous owners
Out of interest, do you know if it is the original engine?
All the best
Neil

That looks quite well maintained engine, by the looks of cleaness. It is almost like a new!

Hi Nick,
I'm not surprised to see that your car is very clean, even under the rocker cover!
Looks terrific.
Andrew.

Re: oil spray bar replacement and change of oil grade
Nice job Nick Just a quick question, did you test the spray bar before putting the rocker cover back on. I only ask as I am wondering what method you used if so, as I have heard some people managing this cleanly, and others starting the car and covering everything in oil.
Re: oil spray bar replacement and change of oil grade
I just pull off the distributor lead and then crank it. You don't get oil everywhere as the cam isn't spinning fast enough.
I'm the one who leaves all those shoes in the carriageway.

Good tutorial as always Nick. As you rightly say, buying off Martin you know you're getting the right parts. I'll give that oil a try when I service mine.

Hi all.
Thanks for all your replies. Nice one
Apologies for the delay in responding.
Neil, remember I met the previous owner of B112 at Simply 2016. Had a great chat with him. He told me he swapped out the Pinto for the now 2.0 which he said he had shipped over from Germany so yep its not the original engine mate. Must have been done about 15yrs back so really pleased its stil looking pretty clean. It had been sitting for some time when I first bought it so first oil change was quite dirty. Since thenI I have carried out regular oil changes without fail and never driven it hard. Am quite happy to sit on the motorway doing 60/70 mph but dont tell John this
I prob over do the oil changes but its so easy and my Pintos worth it !
Paul think it was Steve I first heard mention testing the spray bar by removing king lead and cranking. Tom obviously swears by this too !! Simple job to do and nice to have a new spray bar...mind you there is not alot that can go wrong fitting it as long as you take your time and remember to tighten the bolts Its always nice to hear comments from you guys as you all know your stuff so to hear you compliment my engine is very rewarding indeed.
Thanks again for your comments guys. Very much appreciated
All the best now

Ps Andrew I use Autoglym Super Cam/Valve Polish....its very good stuff

Re: oil spray bar replacement and change of oil grade
VR1 is a good oil for your Pinto, better than most Mineral 20W-50s out there ( Modern Specs : API SM and ACEA A3/B4 ) and it has 1300 parts per million of ZDDP ( a Zinc and Phosphorous compund ) which is important for flat tappet cams to prevent wear like the ones in all Capri engines ( the concentration has been reduced in a lot of oils because it can damage catalytic converters ), and there have been a lot of camshaft failures happening in the past years because of it, originally they were spec'd for a 10W-40, but it will be fine on 20W-50 IF you are gentle to the engine when it's cold.
