capri rv8 project/restoration

Post by ganglygoo »

hiya folks. i'm new to the forum and figured i'd introduce myself and what im doing.
got myself a mk3 capri already converted to a rover v8 3.9. albeit a very bad conversion... good in places but very poor in others. and ive stepped in to restore and modify said capri.
couple issues however.. is there any way of retaining the original speedo and rev counter?

Hi and welcome to the forum. Well done for being brave & taking someone else's conversion on as a project. It's got lots of potential & bet it sounds good too, sorry can't help with your speedo query but i'm sure someone on here will be able to. :goodluck:

thanks for the support. ive actually had the car for a little over a year now, but work commitments mean i can only work on it at weekends.
thus far i have;
replaced the sills and other odd sections of flooring and bodywork
cut off the rusty old valance and replaced with a fibreglass one
pulled the engine out and stripped the top end
redone the tranmission tunnel
made some tubular exhaust manifolds
sprayed the engine bay
stripped and sprayed the interior of the car
converted the front struts to coilovers
polybushed the front as the rear came polybushed
plan on throwing in some alloy rack mounts
awaiting delivery of some wilwood alloy brake bells to mount my 310mm disks with wilwood calipers
purchased sierra rear discs and calipers and caprisport bracket, yet to assemble
already got some 15x8 jbw minilights awaiting tyres
currenty in the process of mounting/ making a panhard rod, should have that done this weekend.
as soon as i have a rolling car again ill begin to reassemble the engine :)

Fair play, you've been pretty busy then :) this sounds like a well engineered project & something different, looking forward to seeing progress on this one. I know what you mean about time to work on the car, it's something we all struggle with, keep at it mate.
All the best,

right, so a few more photos of the things ive done over the past few months..
engine bay mocked up with a bmw 530i rad in place, fits a treat.
http://s558.photobucket.com/user/gangly ... ort=3&o=15

then came spraying the bay.. pretty happy with the outcome.. im certainly no professional.
http://s558.photobucket.com/user/gangly ... ort=3&o=14

soon sprayed the inside too..
http://s558.photobucket.com/user/gangly ... ort=3&o=12

tubular manifolds for the v8.. off something else, but not entirely sure what, but the passenger side only needed slight modification, whereas the drivers side basically had to be started from scratch to clear the engine mounts and steering column.. i just hacked it up to use the bends. then heat wrapped both so they look a bit better.

http://s558.photobucket.com/user/gangly ... ort=3&o=10

then a couple weeks ago set about making a panhard rod for it.. went suprisingly well. started with a rally design kit for escorts, so a bit of chopping and welding later. also put an adjuster in, so it can be adjusted in place.
http://s558.photobucket.com/user/gangly ... sort=3&o=4
http://s558.photobucket.com/user/gangly ... sort=3&o=2

stone chipped the fuel tank.. mainly because it was bright red before.
http://s558.photobucket.com/user/gangly ... sort=3&o=3

and re undersealed the rear end with a shultz gun.. can also see the panhard bracket on the far side.
http://s558.photobucket.com/user/gangly ... sort=3&o=4

rear end with the valance cut off and nice painted parts visible.
http://s558.photobucket.com/user/gangly ... sort=3&o=2

rear valance back on.. just needs the filler flatting really.
http://s558.photobucket.com/user/gangly ... sort=3&o=0

then last week after about 3 month of waiting.. my brake bells turned up. look lovely and for a 310mm set up it is incredibly light. just need to start on fabricating the caliper mounts. compared here with the dics the car came with.
http://s558.photobucket.com/user/gangly ... sort=3&o=3

rear brakes.. sierra discs and calipers with the caprisport brackets..had to shave a bit of material off the carriers though as it interfered with the disc.. so maybe i had incorrect discs or carriers.. who knows.. either way it wasnt a had fix.
http://s558.photobucket.com/user/gangly ... sort=3&o=1

so thats where i am at.. very nearly a rolling car once i sort out small jobs like nylocs and rubber boots and fitting tyres. (toyo T1r's).
i feel like light is at the end of the tunnel. getting a rolling car will be a major milestone in my eyes. :)

Thanks for the update pictures, impressed with what you've done so far. I struggle with time just to keep mine in standard trim, designing & manufacturing bespoke items takes a lot longer but worth it to have something individual & memorable. This is going to turn out nice, good luck getting the car rolling.

soo.. another weekend down.. time for a few more pics. :) and ive figured out how to add photos properly rather than a link!

got 3 of the 4 tyres fitted. just couldnt get one on the bead. maybe try some brake fluid + lighter and see what happens..
Image

mocked up the caliper brackets with some left over steel.. had the idea of using two pieces, 1 attached to the upright, the other the caliper, then getting into place, then bracing with more steel to form a template for the bracket... BUT by sheer fluke the two pieces just sat together and was a perfect fit.. so very little hassle really. bonus. now ive got the dimensions i can order some plate to start the finalised brackets.
Image

here it is mocked up on the car.. looking nice :)
Image

here it is with the wheel on.. thank god it actually fits.. but only about 3mm clearance between caliper and wheel.
Image

pulled everything off while i could and put some shutz underseal onto the inner wing, then a few hours later bolted it all back up.
Image

then while i had the wing off i cut the corroded lower edge off and replaced with fresh. turned out pretty good, although i didnt take a photo.
Image

also this weekend set about aligning the front valance (fibreglass one) with the wings.. had to chop the top edge off as needed it to sit about 10mm higher.. then mocked it up in place with it clamped to the wings.. think it'll look fairly presentable :)
