Project underside trim

Post by Fordoholic Nick »

Hi chaps,

Well I finally got a chance to freshen up my underside trim with a few coats of.....Yes you guessed....Halfords Flexible Vinyl Paint Dark Grey :)

Removed the trim this afternoon, but before I painted up the trim I had another issue to address. So while I had the trim out I dropped the steering column and whipped out the dash facia so I could remove the instrument cluster to replace the speedo that was misreading and misbehaving. I swapped over the "counter" unit (as per a previous thread I did, thanks to this tip from Rob) so the replacement speedo now shows the same mileage. Got that all fitted back in then could eventually turn my attention to the trim.

Almost every panel was soiled quite badly so I was really happy with the results. Took a few pics. Nothing too exciting but thought some of you might be interested...

First up is the ashtray before...you can see all the marks

And the ashtray after...
Image20160306_183928 by nicholas bowler, on Flickr

The under side steering wheel column...its hard to see but it is very scuffed around the ignition key area
Image20160306_152236 by nicholas bowler, on Flickr

And after...it really has come up like new...
Image20160306_161023 by nicholas bowler, on Flickr

So you get the idea of the results before/after. Here is the rest of the trim...

Hazard light/ Fader switch trim panel

Ashtray trim panel
Image20160306_184109 by nicholas bowler, on Flickr

Glove Box...now the way the light was it looks a different Grey compared to the rest, but it really does match the rest of the trim perfectly
Image20160306_161605 by nicholas bowler, on Flickr

Even touched up the armrests too with fantastic results....here is one before...
Image20160306_155540 by nicholas bowler, on Flickr

And after...
Image20160306_161533 by nicholas bowler, on Flickr

So there you have it, all nicely freshened up and ready to get fitted back in tomorrow. I did manage to get the glove box back in before dark today :)

Before I refit the rest of the trim tomorrow, while I had the dash facia removed to change the speedo it was a perfect time to fit the spring clip Steve kindly donated to me (cheers Steve). That makes two ! I am picking up a parcel in the morning that my mate took delivery of for me from Martin. This amongst other bits has the third of the spring clips, so this will make a full house ! (cheers Martin), and the dash facia should now sit better with these clips :D

Next to freshen up with *HFVP are the side trim kick panels in the foot wells, and the carpet retaining strips you see when you open the doors !

All the best chaps. Hope I did not go on too much but I fear I already done this :)

Nick

* HFVP is an abbreviation for Halfords Flexible Vinyl Paint :)

That's looks great Nick, is there no end to the uses for the vinyl spray.. it's amazing the difference it makes, really freshens the interior up. I'm really glad the speedo tip worked out, that's excellent thanks for the update. If you get a chance when it's all assembled, I'td be great to see a picture of it all built up. Right, off to halfords for some more spray ..
All the best :D

Cheers Rob,

Mate its great stuff, as you now know yourself with the superb results with your dash :)

I am running out of things to spray up with HFVP fella...but for now here's a few more I did today in the Black this time...

Radio Facia and the window winder handle trims...
Image20160307_182454 by nicholas bowler, on Flickr

And the handles themselves and door speaker grills (spare ones I have)...
Image20160307_182442 by nicholas bowler, on Flickr

So another day with HFVP Rob...

I will be sure to post up a few pictures when it all goes back in. I still have the dash facia out waiting for the final third spring clip for it, then I will put all the trim back...and I will test the new speedo too and let you know if the counter works after swapping it out. That really was a great tip Rob ;)

All the best mate

Nick

Post by Fordoholic Nick »

Hi chaps,

Still going strong with the HFVP Dark Grey :)

Got in from work this afternoon and had a quick half hour at it...painting my plastic trim I mean of course !

Not underside trim anymore as that's pretty much done (foot well side panels only remain to be painted), so now...

Tailgate wiper motor cover/trim before...

Image20160308_170325 by nicholas bowler, on Flickr

And after....

Image20160308_173212 by nicholas bowler, on Flickr

Image20160308_173217 by nicholas bowler, on Flickr

And the carpet retaining cover/trims very grubby before...
Image20160308_170428 by nicholas bowler, on Flickr

And much better after...

Chaps I am running out of trim to paint up so you will not be seeing many more of my "trim updates"...I think I just heard a :woot: from the forum

All the best

Looking at your pictures again, the grey colours the trim really well & looks very close to the original ford grey. A great improvement Nick. The black covers really well too, I wonder if this would be any good on the mk3 corner bumpers, maybe as they're outside it may not be any good, wonder if anyone's tried it ?
Must be running out of things to spray now mate, but well worth the effort .

Is Nick suffering from a cough and runny nose, along with frequent nose bleeds?

On a serious note, anyone using an aerosol indoors should ensure that they wear a mask designed to protect against fumes, not just a dust mask.

Lecture over!

Thanks Rob, Yep it really does match very well indeed mate. Its given every bit of "tired" looking trim I had a new lease of life. The only thing now is the seats now look more "tired" with all this freshening up of the interior I been doing, but as much as I would love to get my fishnets re trimmed methinks this will have to wait a bit longer, but it would definitely be the icing on the cake. I love the Fishnets. I know they are not standard for the Laser but as soon as I seen them when I went to view the car I was drooling all over them

Rob re the bumper corners I bought this stuff from Halfords and may give it a go next week....

Image20160308_203249 by nicholas bowler, on Flickr

Have not used it before so will give it a try and let you know how I get along with the stuff. It has a "rattle" when you shake it so that will keep me happy :D

All the best

Have always liked fishnet Recaro seats since I had silver strobed ones on my 2.0S.

If you do, let us know how it looks, I recently bought 'plastic bumper filler' from Halfords as my corner bumpers had the odd nick & scrape. It filled & rubbed down in no time & looks pretty good. Havn't sprayed them yet so be good to see how your paint comes out.
