Capri V10

Post by Andygtt »

Hi all
Im new here and recently bought myself a capri to play with as I do love a little project :) so I thought i would start a project thread here.

As a 19yr old I bought myself a loverly 2.8i special and had that up until I had my first child when I needed something more practical as a pram wouldn't fit in the boot so I bought a cossie lol. Now many many years later Im remarried and my wife has always been a ford lady, and when she was young her gramps had a capri and she always promised herself one, however never had one as she only had new cars (mad I know) and they had stopped production.

So when it came to deciding on a new project Mrs GTT asked if we could do a capri... seeing as I always loved them I of cause thought it was a fantastic idea :?:

So I started searching for a suitable car to base my project on, after a few months I found a loverly 1983 2.0s that had been stripped of all it's nice parts and then sold without an engine, box, brakes, wheels etc etc but the body was fantastic... In fact its a car that was advertised on here and a link is below, its a shame it had been stripped as it used to have a YB cossie engine alone with loads of tasty parts, but the previous owner had bought it purely as a donor for his MK1 escort!... it was this owner that had it featured in Retro ford mag in may this year.

I know my project will divide opinion as I have absolutely no intention of sticking to a tried and tested path, in truth it will end up only looking like a capri but will hold little DNA from them. My plans are to fit a BMW V10 engine and tune it to between 550-600bhp, Im going to fit an X pack body and modify it to make it look like it rolled off the factory the way it end up. I will then take moulds and make the entire body in carbon fibre.
Chassis wise I intend to make my own suspension with double wishbones all round, brakes will be 355mm discs with 6 pots front and 4 pots rears.
Wheels are compomotive 18's all round, with 10inch rears and 9 inch fronts, tyres are 265 and 225.

Progress has been slow in the few months since I bought the car, however I have fully stripped the interior, glass and engine bay, along with welding up and filling the sunroof and initially fitted the X pack & started making some of the mods. Im removing the V10 from the donor M5 tomorrow so that I can get the engine into the capris engine bay and set the exact stance of the car (as it will be as low as I can get the engine under the hood), will be at least 2 inches lower than a stock 2.8i and more if I can get.

Anyhow enough words, Im guessing pictures are what will be really wanted :)

Capri as I bought it
Image

trial fitted the x pack arches
Image

cut the rear inner arches back.

Image

prepped the body ready for bonding
Image

lots of tweaking of the X pack to get it to fit how I want, will almost certainly be reprofiling the FG arch but can't do that till the engine has dictated the final stance.

Image

playing with the front valance trying to work out my final design, I'm going to have a 100mm splitter around 120mm off the floor as the car will have some ground effect under it with full flat floor and a large diffuser.

Image

This engine is moving home tomorrow :)

So I'm at the stage were I need to decide on the stance of the car so I can finalise the arches.... For that I need the engine is no I can get the car as low as possible without the engine hitting the bonnet or hanging under the chassis. So I have removed the V10 from the M5 and it's now residing next to the Capri. Today's job will be to get it in the engine bay but it looks like the stance I currently have it at will work.

It is a big engine, but everything is packaged within the engines dimensions so it's a like a box with everything bolted on.

That is a BIG engine :) looking forward to the progress on this, I'm in awe of anyone attempting something on the scale of this. Good luck with your project, this is going to be something special. Like it.

It's tight, but it fits with all the auxiliaries, header loom all attached... No cutting yet but would to if it was staying here permanently.

As I suspected the engine height is the biggest issue, not going to be able to lower it much over stock to retain decent ground clearance under the sump and not interested in any bonnet mods as want it to look stock.

Fantastic work and great to see the progress so far. I spotted your thread on Pistonheads a while ago and posted a link on here to it as I knew there would a bunch on interest.

Looking forward to following the project which is both inspired and insane in equal measures!

Have you now settled on sticking with the 3 major components from the BMW so you can get it IVA'd and put on an age related plate (i.e. the old BMW plate)?

Thanks for following.

I have decided it will have to go through IVA, can't really legitimately avoid that without downspecing the project significantly... cutting the tunnel to fit the box, modifying the bulkhead, 4 linking the rear and even cutting the rear arches to fit the X pack DOES mean if DVLA ever find out they would revoke your V5 and insist on an IVA and you loose the cars identity, its because to retain the original cars identity it MUST have an unmodified Monocoque OR brand new to original specification... Its mad as thousands of cars breach these rules, stranger still is that they have been in place 30 years!... I guess they are mainly in place to catch cut and shuts etc.
Many say ignore the regs, but I'm the kinda bloke that gets caught if I take a pen from the office so Im not prepared to risk it given the investment in time and money I'm going to do.
Truth is I only found all this out after I had started the project and I was faced with the decision you have mentioned, I mostly knew the rules but didn't realise how strict on an unmodified chassis DVLA are.

Im not going to let the car end on a Q, so I will have to go for age related on the M5 or a brand new plate. Both are achievable as pretty much everything will be new anyhow... I recon I will go for whichever is easiest to achieve.

Don't think you need an IVA for gearbox tunnel mods, bulkhead maybe so though.
Is the IVA not worked on a points system e.g. Body, Suspension, Engine etc
4 link doesn't necessary mean loss of transmission as you may still use an Atlas, if you have to pass an IVA i guess you know you are lining yourself up for a hard fight. Height and width of lights etc becomes critical as do many other features, which the Capri may not pass!
Plans have changed to just make a good fun Track Car :)

Yes its worked on a points scheme and you MUST have 8 points to retain cars identity, the chassis or monoque represents 5 points.

The issue is that the 8 points MUST contain the 5 points of the Chassis or Monocoque and it must be unmodified.... DVLA have issued clarification notes stating specifically that any tunnel mods to fit a different gearbox classify the Monocoque as modified, they have also stated that any bulked mods to fit an alternative engine also classify as modifications.... they have even clarified that rolling arches is OK, but cutting the arches to fit wide arches constitutes a modification to the moncoque.

It might seem mad and certainly I originally thought I was ok to do the mods I planned, Ive spent quite a bit of time since establishing what exactly are the rules and I have 3 options..... 1 don't modify the chassis so don't fit X pack and settle for a T5 gearbox that will struggle with the power. 2 do the mods and keep quiet and hope to never be found out (the common path followed). 3 Go through IVA and register the car legitamately.

Seeing as the EU are clamping down in these areas and our rules have been in place 30 years I can see a time when our rules are enforced... also me informing DVLA of the engine number change will probably provoke an inspection... as I say, Id be the one person who got caught out lol

Whichever it ends up on (age related or new plate) the IVA will def. be worth it. To put all that effort in to then have the v5 revoked just isn't worth the risk.

The IVA rules are pretty well documented and I doubt you'll have any issues satisfying them. Would be awesome to see a 2016 plate Capri :)

Not done huge progress as I did my back in tiling the utility room and have been struggling to actually stand up let alone do anything meaningful.

I have been trying to nail down the colour the car will be... My Wife always wanted a yellow capri, so I really want a pearl to make it 'pop' against the exposed carbon.
I managed to get hold of a lambo yellow that a liked (but it wasn't a pearl) and also a 3 stage TVR pearl yellow and I did a test spray out of each along with a pearl orange that I already had... the Lambo yellow was stunning an exactly what I wanted but it didn't have the pearl 'pop' i wanted.... the TVR 'poped' fanatically, but it was too tangerine in some directions/light.... I tried the pearl over the Lambo yellow which made it 'pop' but turned it to a mustard colour which we did not like.
So I was back on the search and I managed to find another colour which was similar yellow to the lambo but was a 3 stage pearl.... sprayed this out and it was absolutely perfect.

I have also spent some time reshaping the window returns, I didn't like the metal moulds around the glass of the side windows, so I have temporary filled them with filler and shaped them. I put masking tape down so that the filler will remove easily what I have taken moulds. I will then have the option to have these returns painted or lacquered raw carbon.

I also started filling the holes in the drivers door and rectifying the odd small dent ready for me to take moulds... not 100% sure what design of door handle I am going to have, however it is going to be flush and 'hidden'.

Anyhow over to the pics.... car is starting to look very multi coloured due to all the quick test sprays lol

Hi,
This is going to be superb. It sounds like the yellow paint you've chosen will be an amazing colour, and will really make a statement. :D

I bought one of these V12's for £10.51 on ebay a few years back lol

Hi guys,
I'm excited at the prospect of a v10 or v12,I was looking at a 2.0 pinto, with Webber carbs and a good exhaust manifold,as I'm stripping and restoring the car myself I'm reluctant to go down that route as I will be getting into geometry and different jettings/weight distribution etc, what are your thoughts on the 2.0 pinto?and how do I post photos here!?

Managed to get some garage time over the weekend, my focus has been on ride height / stance... After much tweaking I have managed to get the car another 1inch lower than before and only 5mm higher than I originally wanted before the engine stopped play.

Therefore it was time to start modifying the arches, for my double wishbone suspension design I want the car a specific width and track and I don't want rubbing despite close wheel arch gaps... Ive started with the rear as this wheel position is fixed (I can vary the front a few inches if needed).

So I set the car to ride height, marked the new position of the arch, cut it out and remade it... the arch had to go out 10mm and come up 50mm.
I wanted the arches to look subtle rather than catch your eye as the goal of the body mods is to make it look like it left the factor like it.

Im happy with the look, gives me plenty of room in the arch for 2.5inches of bump... next step is to bond the quarter panel on permanently and skim it all with filler to get the finish perfect as the FG panel is far from perfect.

arch marked and ready for cutting.
