To update on the brake cooling, i will be probably ising 63 to 75mm ducting for space requirements.
Also the metal disc shiel i have shown i have already revised so that it will sit inside the rear bell of the disc and will force air into the centre of the disc. This also means the rear of the disc will be open to get air flow around it to cool it.

I may have to invest in some little thermal sensors to point at the discs so i can fettle the setup to give adequate cooling. Really depends on alot of factors including disc & pad materials.

Other than above i am just waiting for some warm dry days to carry on with painting items so that they can be finished and then we can think about attacking the shell for paint :)

Items on the list.......

So i have been doing alot of rubbing down in the shell, but i have where possible tried to break it up so i don't bore myself to death!

So the rear DIY strut brace which goes across the turrets and down into the rear chassis rails is complete and painted. ALthough i will add additional cross bracing to it later once i have finalised position for items in the boot space.

I also took some spring saddle plates and the steering coupler to give them a good clean and refresh them ready for re-fitting.

Also seam sealed all seams and joins in panel work and welding underneath which took quite a few cartridges of sealant. Next step is to Schutz the complete underbody to keep it rust free.
My wife did a really good job helping me here.

Also fitted the rear leaf springs and PU race bushes.

The reason the original filler pipe is fitted is to help stop dust from inside and outside car. But also because i intend on using original filler for the car into a custom tank!

Onto the boring stuff.
Soo much easier to rub a car down on a spit, is what i should say, but it is still a hateful job that i much dislike.
Starting with the roof

Still got to go back over all the panels with softer grade papers. Still also adding in skims of filler here and there where the hammer and dolly cannot quite get a perfect finish.
More pics to follow, ut not too many. I hope the next ones will include alot of primer haha and painting of the inner wheels so that they can be built up.

Sprayed most of the car Grey primer this weekend just gone. Still not done back panel and valence as the car is on the spit and it is impossible to access that complete area with ease. So we will sort out once dropped on its wheels :)

Front Struts ready for paintImage

Bonnet getting a bit of rusting work. Cut out underneath front panel as it was rotten. Will tack weld what is left together for strength

Top side taking alot of effort to get back to bare metal

Rear passenger arch with primer. Still got a bit of work to do as the shape on top of arch is not quite right.

Roof looking nice and clean. Much better than it was as someone had walked across it at somepoint!

To be honest i am over the moon as this signifies another big leap forward in this looonngg build
Got a show in a couple of weeks so i am wanting to put this on show as a part build resto as it is, albeit resting on its wheels.
Once we get back from that show i have alot more work to do to finish the not quite right areas and ready it for Signal Yellow application, schutz underseal and injecting the hidden areas with sealer.

Now it's really taking shape, aiming for the show is a great idea, getting encouragement from show goers works wonders to help you finish off a project.

Thanks Rob
Yes it has given a bit more motivation and a bloody good excuse for the wife to let me just get on with it, without worrying quite soo much about normal daily house & father things haha.
Just wish i had a few others to help out as i could make better progress.
Anyway i am hoping in next few days to 1 week she will be on her wheels to do ride height checks with out springs and then with.

Unfortunately i just don't have the cash and time to get the Compomotive wheels buitl up and shed with rubber in time for the show, so i just have to give my RS 4 spoke alloys a clean and remvoe the calipers as they don't fit over the calipers and only just over the big discs.

Do i fit bucket seats without doors etc etc Hoping it will look cool at the show in a part resto stage. Something out of the norm i suppose at a car show.
I want this car to be driveable for this time next year so i can get it to the show in 1 piece

Now trawling through ebay and other online shops for last few goodies for the show to make it look even better

UPDATE
The car is on it's wheels and boy does she sit low with nothing of any weight inside! Still would like lower, so need to crack on and purchase the de-cambered single leaf springs.
Pictures to follow, it defo brought a smile to my face :)

Pictures!
On it's wheels! Rear is single leaf, with Gaz 1.9" coilover and also some 1.5" wooden lowering blocks for ride height checks
Image

Sneaky coilovers hiding up front set on lowest setting with 8" spring and helper spring. Should sit bit lower once it gets powerplant and transmission
Image

Big ass dent in rear corner!
Image
With dents like this they have to get worse before getting better!
Image

After alot of pulling and manupulating we managed to pull alot of it out. Not perfect, but almost there. The rest can get final shaping from filler. But had to weld up the holes we made to put in the grips
Image

Back panel completely stripped to bare metal and my legs were suitably full of metal wire brush ends after this!
Image

After removing the roll over spit clamps i was not happy with part of the front. So off comes the front panel to do more tidying up work
Image

Not the straightest panel in the world, so i have been busy manipulating this and hammering out dents, so this needs bit more work
Image

Both front bumper iron mount areas were very bad and hidden under the roll over spit clamps. Had to cut them out and put in some new metal!
Image

Both sides! there was me thinking the rust work had finished!
Image

Bit ashamed of this, think it is going to get a bit more work. Really couldn't get a good finish and my welder was playing up a rotter.
Then whilst grinding back and then cleaning up with grinder the wire wheel decided to attack my arm and try to kill me so i have not looked at it since. Gonna need a bit more weld in areas so i can flat back nice and even. But it is properly solid at least!
Prime example if you rush that bit too much when you are too tired to do the job properly. 6 weeks basically working full itme job, finish work go straight to garage for few hours every night, then help get kids sorted for bed, back to the garage and work until bedtime and full time wekeends. Not recommended, so well deserved rest to be had and then back on it.
Image

She has come a long way from this rotter i bought all those years ago :)

Even as a mock up you can get the idea of the low stance the car will have on completion, wearing those compomotives, it will look even better. I know what you mean about those wire wheel wires sticking in you, have used them in a previous job, thank god for facemasks ;) . Looking at your last picture, you can see the work you've put into it, getting nearer now even though you've still got a fair amount left to do. Hope you make the show deadline, with any luck, you can drive it there next year.

Fingers crossed. Yes that is the idea for next year. Although probably only a warm Pinto. The V8 still is going to take some. Time to sort out.
The last pic it didn't look too bad. But photos past you can see the work it needed.
Thanks for encouragement :)

Update. So I know the show isn't until Sunday this week and I have had offers to help. But I cannot make the show purely based on common sense as I just had surgery and I need to recover first! My heart says let's just go, but my head says I will do myself injury loading the car and unloading at the show etc etc. So this year for he first time in years I am spectating as my other cars are all sorn at the mo which normally go to the shows. .. Doh!

There is another show in a month so that the new deadline :)

It's not worth an injury, it's really frustrating when you aim for something & can't make it. Been there a lot the last 2 years but there's always another show . Be sure to let us know the reaction to it of you make next months show :goodluck:

So after a long time being able to do nothing streneous! I managed a part day in the garage.
I noticed that in the rush before the show i had installed the steering coupler upside down! What an idiot haha, so rectified that, but now i need to fettle it a bit more as i am slilghtly off with the splines.

Anyone know a good tip to get perfect alignment wheel to rack and even lock to lock?

Also pressed out bearings out of my adjustable top mounts and refitted brand new skf spherical bearings.
Then pressed in the Caprisport misalignment spacers to work in conjunction with coilover inserts.

The bonnet i have is in bad shape, so i have allso been stripping this to bare metal and straightening out a few dings(of which there are alot!)
Alot more bodywork to do before i can get the rest of the car (doors & wings in primer) so will be doing that over next coming weeks.
Fingers crossed i may be able to get the car totally painted this year(if weather allows!)

As for pictures.............. well it looks like i going to have to replace all photobucket stuff with Flickr now!

Update, funnily enough all the bare metal i left from last time is not so bare and shiny looking. So need to sort that out before too long.

Also got some pricing for the engine & will now just await pricing on the T5 transmission.
Almost completley made up my mind that i want to go down the route of a 302, so best options so far are looking at the likes of a crate engine with 280+hp. Be a good starting point with a T5.

New toys for the old girl.

Picked up a lifeline 2.25litre electrically operated extinguisher system.

Will now need to try and find a good place for it and the battery. Although I think it may either live in boot or just behind passenger seat.

Slight bit of an update, but a empty block & heads are coming within the next few weeks so it can be mocked up in the engine bay.
now just trying to find a tremec Mustang T5 gearbox to fit onto it so i can mock up the 302 together with the gearbox.
