1.6 GL 49k original resto
Just picked up this gorgeous little 1.6 gl automatic from a fellow board member.
Managed to get in before someone else who evidently wanted t break it up for parts!
This car only has 49k original miles on it, something that's backed up by a long history.
The engine sounds like its brand new, its the smoothest pinto you'll ever hear its amazing!
That and everything else about it is great, interior, dash (has original radio installed), carpets, headlining - everything on the inside is practically factory fresh! Except for the footwells that need welding, wings and a few other relatively minor issues that need addressing.
It has new bumpers, new exhaust, new tyres, wheels have been refurbed etc etc.
I managed to snap it up for ridiculously cheap (i mean peanuts cheap, for a low mileage capri, well under the £800 mark) before someone else who wanted to break it did, can you believe a car in this condition was gonna get broken up!?
A bloody crime especially since too many are being broken up for parts (with ridiculous marks ups on ebay i might add) and not enough are being saved to be put back on the road...ya know WHERE THEY BELONG!
Plans for this is are to do a full back to factory restoration, nothing will be changed as originality is this cars' trump card, it will then be sold on once finished, so keep an eye out for it

Congratulations on your purchase, it looks like you got a bargain there. It's good that you've saved it from being broken, it looks like it's in much better condition than it was described in the ad.
I seem to recall that it needs a lot of welding, which made it uneconomical to repair. Are you planning on doing all the work yourself?

There's nothing here that we didn't already do to my own 2.0S and i drive that daily with no issues.
I wont be doing any welding personally as i simply don't have the knack for it, but my dad is a good welder and I'll be helping with everything else.

I agree that is a lovely car. Shame you will put the work into it then sell it on, but I guess your motivation is to make a bit of money out of it. And why not, its a great little project with the satisfaction of keeping another Capri on the road for a few more years.Andrew 2.8i wrote:Hi,

This is far from beyond saving and i think we should be more focused on keeping what is left alive, rather than breaking them to keep others alive and make profits.
Breaking something like this would clearly be profit/greed motivated, not because people love these cars and want to keep them alive.
Break something that is beyond saving, or something with immense body and chassis damage but not something with only 42k on the lock that would only take a mornings worth of welding to get MOT worthy!

I don't disagree that it would be a crime to break such a good example. I might have missed something here, but I haven't seen anyone post on this forum that they wanted to buy the car to strip it for spares! All I'm hearing is your speculation that it was going to be broken for spares.

Possibly Andrew. But I'd suspect anyone buying the car wouldn't commit to what their intentions were until they'd bought it and given it a good looking over to determine the best route.
Sorry I don't mean to sound harsh with anyone here, but it seems some people have it in for people that break cars and make a bit of money doing it. Someone's got to make a living out of it, just like some will restore cars and make equal profits, then play the moral high ground.

Making a profit once finishing it is more than reasonable considering the cost and time that would have gone into saving the car, and i already own a fully restored 2.0 S (another one saved) so i have no interest in keeping this one.
To clarify since this is the internet and everything gets blown out of proportion or twisted into something its not:
I dont have a problem with people who break things up for spares, selling parts off something that is beyond saving to help keep those that remain on the road is perfectly fine, i DO have a problem with people who break good cars, saveable cars (like this one) up for spares.
To me, if you are a fan of something that is becoming rarer and rarer it is your responsibility to save it, not just break it up for spares and put those spares up on ebay with a gigantic mark up.
And again, before i get torn down for that statement let me clarify i know there are many honest people selling spares out there, Capri Gear, Nial Diamond etc but i see many more on ebay selling things for ridiculous amounts just to be greedy because they know parts are rare.
And yes, the negotiations were done off-site, not that it should make any difference, im just repeating what the seller told me.
He had interest in the car but it was to simply break it up, i got in just in time to save it from that fate.
As fans of these rare and beautiful cars id have thought that would have been a good thing.

I have to agree with Arya2.0S on this matter....also not just Ebay sellers, there were a lot of traders at Classic Ford with items unpriced,
so to me they don't really know what it's worth, depending on what they have sold during the day to what price they Invent on the spot if
you enquire.
Saying that other traders were fine as are most Ebayers but unfortunately you get always get buying and selling everywhere.

We certainly are! Though its a much bigger job than this and my dad has a Stag he needs to finish first but once thats gone in hopefully a couple of months we can really get cracking on the capri.Andrew 2.8i wrote:Hi,

Updates...finally!

I can only put 3 days a week into it unfortunately due to a course in media i am doing but he is working on it pretty much every day so it will be done soon if all goes well.

The engine bay was coated in some black under seal stuff (seen here ...dont understand why anyone would paint that shit onto their engine bay so i got inside the engine bay and got rid of it and primed it:
And then i painted the final color!

That looks like a nice survivor? Whomever it was that painted the engine bay with underseal certainly "got their moneys worth" judging by the lack of corrosion?

Nearly finished!
All the welding has been done and now she is solid again, just finished the bodywork and got everything primed and now she is in paint, havnt taken pictures of the paintwork yet but i will soon.

Paint and lacquer, will be wet sanded and polished next week.
Not bad considering no spray booth and...well just look at how dirty the workshop is.
