It has an electric which I use to prime the system but for it to really work I need a non return valve between the carb and the mechanical fuel pump.

Going to begin the task of pulling the motor today. Drain all the vital fluids, disconnect the auto box and get ready to lift.

Wont be today as haven't got any chains to lift with. will get the prop off and possibly the gearbox out but we shal see.

I don't know why the 3.0 is like that, my pinto always fired up much quicker after being stood, even with the same 38 dgas on the top.

Still, the essex does sound fantastic, always puts a smile on my face.

Right, down to business.

Yesterday I got a set of chains from B&Q to lift out the lump upfront. Each chain was rated to 140kg and I used 4 of them. I linked the chains in pairs of two with shackles and hooked them up to the exhaust manifolds diagonally across the engine. I test lifted the engine a few times to get the tension on the chains right and then away she came.

Hardest part was getting the engine off auto box, those torque converter nuts were a pain but luckily I had the correct S bend 9/16th spanner lying next to me which made the job easier.

I had to jack the car up at the front to have clearance for the engine crane so as the engine came forward I lowered the shell around the block.

I know the V6 engines are heavy but my word is it a lump of a thing. Only other V6 I have ever removed is the 24V cossy and that seemed lighter, even with the ALD4E box still hanging on the back.

Well the engine is out, tomorrow it will go on the engine stand and have the last of the fluids drained and then the sump removed for an inspection before being cleaned up with the aid of a pressure washer.

The last photos have the new, to me, type 9 fitted to the back to see how it looks. Think it will work well with a mild tune essex and make the car a bit more of a cruiser as she always seemed to be wanting another gear on the motorway.

Enjoy the photos. Not sure what direction to go with the engine. Only has 82K on it so it will remain fairly std. Will see what the inspection reveals as to how much of an overhaul it gets or weather it just gets cleaned and painted with a full est of new gaskets to stop her weeping oil.

I think however a cam is in order with a matching set of steel timing gear, just to pep things up a little.

a fast road cam , re jetting the carb and electronic ignition should give you a nice 160 - 170 Hp on a good engine first you need to sort out the bodywork though!

Agree with that.

No other work will be happening to the car until the shell is a little more advanced.

Also got a Weber 40DFI carb in the garage which might get a refurb and a run on the car. Might be worth a few extra ponies too.

Had a local guy stick one on his 3.0's and when tuned with no other mods it saw a nice boost in power.

Yes the 40 DFI5 Is a rare but good carb , Ford used to sell them from about 1977 to 1981 as a part of the GP1 Pakcage for the 3.0 Capri , i've Heard they use a lot of fuel compared to the 38 DGAS though

Not heard about the fuel consumption while using them.

Might do some back to back tests when the car is done as have a couple that need re-jetting in the garage, bought them on a custom twin essex manifold that came off a TVR.

I was going to run them on the capri but the setup sits too high for the bonnet.

Still, we shal see what happens.

Well the engine is now on its new home now, the engine stand, and has been drained of all its fluids.

I span it over and got the sump off, Unfortunately it had bits in the sump. I think they were old bits of gasket, a few metal shavings and some plastic.

Also when I spin the engine over by hand it sounds like there is a fair amount of hissing coming from the bottom of the pistons.

Think maybe a rebuild with a hone of the bores, some new rings and bearings is the way to go and a few other bits and pieces.

This is all if the shell is a reasonable base for the resto.

Overall happy with the engine as it could have been worse for a 34 year old ford V6.

Going to waterproof the engine and give it a good de-greasing.

I really hope the shell is worth it as I want to do the car.

After long discussions about the best stripping method I think the car is going to be dipped and E coated.

Anyone have any personal first hand experience with this process?

I don't , does the engine have a Steel timing gear? if not it'd be a good idea to buy one just for peace of mind even though the standard ones will only really fail if the engine has been severely overheated, they are noisy for a while at first but over time they quieten down as they bed in

The engine is going to get a steel timing gear as I have heard the fibre ones are more likely to fail on a tuned engine. I don't really fancy sending a rod through the block or smashing the heads to pieces.

Not too worried about a little extra noise as hopefully the exhaust will tastefully cover it during use. lol
