What do the ford guys think having a cappa back in the workshop?
Thanks very much, plenty of blood sweat and tears present in this one! But she's finally coming around!

And there are mixed feelings as I work in a multi franchise, all the VW guys hate in it but that's mainly due to the rivalry! Haha
But the bloke helping me with the welding happy to see it and the master techs 70 this year having worked for ford for 55 years he loves it!

Re: My 86' Laser - THE ENGINE BEGINS

The postman bought me some goodies this week! And I'm looking forward to getting them on the ol' girl! The improvements these will make are well worth it and will save me money overall on tires and replacing rubber bushes!

Adjustable TCA's sourced from Retro Ford. Thanks to "Will01" for the link to these! Cheapest i could find on the net.
Image

These bad boys not only look great being my favorite colour! But the will hugely improve the suspension!
Image

Will let you know how i get on fitting those in the next few weeks. HOWEVER! The next part has been a long time coming.. and of course I'm talking about the task of an engine rebuild!

So. A few weeks ago, i managed to find this beaut of a 2.0 Pinto 205 block, and for a smashing price of only £150!!!

Image
Image

When i bought it, i thought that i would whack a FR32 Cam in it stick her on a set of bike carbs and shove the lump in the car. But i saw sense and decided that seen as its probably had a hard life. (I'm sure its out of a Transit) I would strip the entire engine down to its last nut and bolt, rebuild, replace and restore the lump to its former glory with a few added power tweaks ;)

And today that finally began! Focusing on the cylinder head to start with as its probably the most important part to get right!

Image
Image

When the head finally came off i was incredibly worried about what i had found. It looked terrible and i was sure it would be a total write of. Not having seen the engine running prior to purchase i bought it purely on a whim and the blokes word that it was all fine!

Image
Image

What had actually happened was the the spark plugs had be loose and the head gasket was in poor condition. Which has let water seep into the bored, causing surface rust, and being moved around seems to have dislodged the carbon build up from the cylinder head down into the bore causing a slushy mess of water carbon and rust. However, it cleaned up quite well and after spraying some penetrating/lubricating fluid around the pistons and up the cylinder walls she turned over freely with not notches, catching or any issues at all. and its all come up quite lovely!! so im very pleased and it looks like my bargain engine isn't buggered after all!

Image

Just cleaned the bottom up with a little white bushing looks alright cant see any obvious damage so all good here!
Before
Image
After
Image

So with the head apart, even though it was my day off. I went to work. Wooo... However, i needed to use the valve compressor and the parts washer. At least i didn't have to actually do any work related work!

So i got the valves out, and believe me, i wrapped the collets up so tightly and put them away so safely ill probably forget were i put them knowing me

None the less, with the valves out I'm in a better position to be sending the head away when i decide what exactly ill be having done! Any ideas are welcome as I'm not entirely sure on all my options...

Image

As you can see.. the valve stem seals are totally fubard!!!

Image

So ill be ordering a set of these. Anyone got a good source of good quality ones?

I'm also having trouble getting what im guessing is severe carbon build up on the exhaust outlet. I've managed to remove some of it but on this particular valve its really bad and not even a tap hammer and a sharp pick/punch will get it all out! So is there anything that softens it up?
Image

None the less, i got the head in the parts washer and gave it a good thorough washing with some sort of chemical stuff, I'm not even sure what it is!? All i know is that its great for cleaning stuff! Haha.
Before
Image
After
Image

After this it was getting on and i decided that would be enough tinkering for one day, may get back to stripping the block and get those pistons out and the crank for a closer look and make sure nothings buggered!

So that's all for now! but I'm sure there will be more to come in the next few days!

Comments and Questions welcome,

Tom.

Nice rebuild - been doing similar work myself...

That engine does look like it came from a Transit (VV Carb is the easy clue) - if so it will have a 1.6 cam and a low comp pistons - realise you mention fitting a cam but the low comp needs sorting out if you want performance gains.

Edit - looking at the pic again - that ain't a VV (and not a transit flywheel) - maybe you're luck!

Double Edit - can see the cam pips - it's a normal high comp 2 litre...

Ahhh,
Some sense at last, I wasn't sure what the engine was out as the guy I bought it off was given it along with mk1 Mexico shell. He had never seen it running and was never told what it was from.

At my first guess I thought it might be from a transit but you make a valid point about it not being a vv carb. I'm very doubtful that the engine is from a mk1 Mexico tho? Is there any way of telling with engine numbers?

Not 100% on my Escorts but quite sure the none of the MK1 Mexico's ran pintos - RS2000 only

Also 205 block was much later - only some later Capris had them. Carb also looks like a later variant - not the usual 32/36DGAV

So - most likely from a Sierra - notice it still has the electronic ignition distributor as well.

Hi Tom,

Wow mate you really are making excellent progress with you beloved Capri. Just been having a nose through your restoration thread. Nice one mate. Some great pics of your restoration in full flow. Glad you could use that clutch gaiter. Nice one.

I can imagine the bond between you and your Capri is pretty much unbreakable now...after all you really are bringing it back to life. All credit to you for your hard work and dedication to get your Capri back on the road in superb condition I am sure by the depth of your work so far. Well done mate :applaud:

Really looking forward to hopefully seeing it in the flesh some time, and bet you cant wait to get it out on the road. You will certainly be turning heads wherever you go...

All the best fella

Thanks Nick,

I'm really seeing the progress, however right now I'm struggling to find the time to make any advancements in the restoration. I'm trying to get the welding finished so i can put an MOT on her as shes been parked out the back of work for a whole year now. And unfortunately my boss is pushing me to get it gone due to lack of parking. I have a garage for her to go in but its not safe or legal to move that distance at the moment.

I'm pushing to get her ready for Simply Ford in may but i really cant see it happening... and when i say ready i mean to a standard she can be driven around not looking as pretty as all the others. haha.

Tom,

Good Luck with this mate. Would be fantastic to see your Laser at Beaulieu in any condition mate, but what you don't want to do is feel pressurised to get in ready in time, after all its only a few weeks away now, not that you need telling this I am sure :)

It sounds like as much hard work it is you are really enjoying your restoration. Your boss has been really good to let you keep it at work for a year, and having access to the ramps, tools and expert advice from proper Ford mechanics must be fantastic. What a lucky fellow you are ;) Its almost a shame you have to move it now but suppose when its at work it must be a distraction for you seeing it every day and wanting to spend all day working on it...think your boss might get a tad annoyed with you

Anyhow Tom, if you do manage to get it driving to Beaulieu it would be brilliant, I would love to have a peek at it. My previous Laser was Black just like yours. Brings back some wonderful memories....but if you cant don't stress mate...theres always the "next" show and plenty of them too...

All the best,

Nick

Yeah, that's what I've been telling my self today, there's always more shows and always next year. Even if i don't make it to the deadline i might go anyway as it looks like a smashing day! I'de just love the first long drive to be some were like Beaulieu! but we can only hope and dream! haha.

And yeah its been nice of him, my garage is less than a mile from work so ill be able to drive it over anytime i need to work on her so its not all bad! He understands as he used to have a XR2 Fiesta! and also loves many of the Classic Fords!

Hi Tom,
It's great to read that good progress is being made on your Capri. It is a shame that you won't be ready for Simply Ford, but as Nick says, there will be more shows. It's better to take your time and do a proper job than to rush the work and have to cut corners.
It must be handy to have all the workshop facilities and knowledge of your colleagues so close to hand.
All the best,
Andrew.

Hi mate, progress is looking good so far.
Bit of advice... Don't 'rush to get it done'
If it takes a year it takes a year.
I rushed to get mine done for when I got my licence back and ended up buying another car and tearing my capri to pieces again coz I wasn't happy with the work id done. In that time iv had a kid and it now sits stripped out and buried in the garage getting an inch of welding a month.

If u got a garage bonus. Don't mot it coz you will probably not get round to doing 'all those little jobs'
Get it in the garage and take your time and enjoy the process.
I miss my free evenings and weekends haha

Good luck though mate and hopefully all goes smooth. Few more tips
Expect the unexpected, if you think a job will take an hour it will take three, and be prepared to spend a lot of cash to get things done properly
I KNOW MY CAR IS OLDER THAN ME......WHATS YOUR POINT???

Re: My 86' Laser - Back From The Dead!

Post by sparks »

Hurrah!

A post, since god knows when. I know its been a while... and honestly not a lot has happened.

However.... Progress! at last. So here is the situation. I had to move the Capri to a new location, and that being a council garage with no power and being a few miles from my house so i cant even run an extension. And the neighbors don't look overly friendly... So i had to come up with a plan, either find a unit or find some portable power. So i bought a generator. I had a lot of hassle finding one cheap enough that would run my welder, however i finally got my hands on one and its runs well with the welder! so now i can weld/grind in the garage.

That was the first problem. Second of all the garage has starting leaking. which i was unaware of until i removed the windscreen and put it back in the garage.... only to come back a few weeks later to find the car full of water. great..... so after i cleaned up all the mildew and dried it out i decided i had to sort the roof out. Cuz the council suck and its unlikely they will do anything to fix it.... great. Silicone sealant anyone?

So besides the leaking roof and soaking Capri i have thatched a plan. first of all, it involves tacking this monstrosity of a mess..... (wish me luck)

It started out like this. and me being the bright spark i am decided "Its not that bad. surely its just a small bubble. Ill poke it.....
Image

Obviously... i couldnt have been more wrong and suddenly....

BOOM:

Image
Image
Image
Image
Great 'ey?....

After that i have a small issue of tackling the incredible wiring skills of some idiot...
Image

I removed the sunroof... (I know I'm crazy) to find some more surprises. yay.......
Image
Image
Image
Image

Then just a small patch on the rear tailgate hinge mounting point
Image

So really its a rotten shell. But I'm adamant i can save it.... there wont be much Capri left at this rate.....

Other than that. Not alot has been going on. The weather now determines if i can weld or not as the garage is so small it has to be rolled out to be worked on. (Debating weather or not to make a roll over jig to make life easier? Thoughts?

And here is a full list of all i can think of that needs doing before i can actually think about MOT'ing it. Its much longer than i thought :(

Shell:

- Repair Windscreen/Dash surround
- Fill crack on boot hinge
- Treat rust on roof and repair pinholes
- Replece floor seam to drivers side
- Repair floor section drivers underside (spring shackle)
- Fill/repair bonet holes (front)
- Improve wing rail undersides
- Remount wings correctly
- Repair/Replace drivers side sill (rear quater)
- Rub down/repair passanger rear wheel arch (bad filler/paint)
- Inspect boot floor
- Repair/replace front valance
- Rub down shell? primer? hope to god you dont find more rot....
- Paint Shell....... (Poor wallet)
- Sort out bodge job wheel arch insides cuz whoever fit them needs mental treatment...
- Treat entire underside seal and paint

Interior:

- Repair drivers seat
- Finish painting trim black
- Cover dash leather trim
- Replace headlining (dark)
- Repair dials facia
- Repair parcel shelf?
- Repair rear boot trims
- Dye carpet black

Engine Bay:

- Remove 1.6 - Clean
- Sand/remove paint from engine bay
- Repair any rust/damage
- Smooth/Fill to get clean finish
- Paint engine bay
- Decide what engine you want you mug
- Fabricate?/Buy strut brace?
- Remove cross memeber treat and paint/replace engine mounts

Suspension/Driving Gear:

- Remove all components, inspect and replace if necisairy
- Clean/derust/sand/paint and parts being reused in black
- Fit full polly kit (already purchased)
- Fit adjustable TCA's (already purchased)
- Replace diff cover as starting to rot
- Check crown wheel pinion setup + replace diff oil
- Remove prop inspect, paint.
- Refurb wheels
- Remove steering rack and replace gators and paint rack

2.0 205 Block?:

- Rebuild including seals/gaskets and shizz
- Decide on head modifications
- Head also needs skimming and cleaning due to carbon deposits
- Rebore?/Rehone cylinder walls
- Remove cylinder lips if rehoning?
- New pistons/rods???? ......moneybags
- Twin webbers 40's - crazy expensive....

So wish me luck! Ill hopefully be posting more as the weather begins to pick up!!!

Hope your all not bored yet...

Yikes.

I'm glad you're good with a welder!

Sounds like a big list, but by the sounds of things you're competent enough to get through it all.

I have a couple questions - what do you mean remount wings correctly? How come you're not keeping the 1.6?
Are you planning on doing it all in one go, or just doing enough to get it on the road then taking it on a little at a time?

Well. The 1.6 is mint, I've been torn between keeping it and replacing it I'm still not overly confident in which I will decided. I would like a 2.0 pinto in there, I have a 205 block to replace it with. But then again it's not original... Which isn't a huge issue as the interior will be custom I want it to be neat but different if you know what I mean? I'll certainly be keeping hold of the 1.6 regardless.

And I would like to think I'll keep it stored till it's finished, but I know the MOT parts will be done first ad it may be road worthy sooner than it being finished as it will make it much easier to move around if I need to bring it to work to use the ramps/tools. But I don't want to get it in the road and forget about all the work that needs doing cuz I know it will be easily done!

Also the wings are only roughly fitted onto the rails as I had to move the car in a rush so I mounted them and they don't line up properly and stick out at the sides and it looks wrong so they just need lining up really!

Thanks for the interests! :)

Hey guys,

Been a flipping long time since I've posted. Been a hectic year or so! But i'm finally back and things are about to take off for sure.

I've moved to Birmingham, this that the other. Change of jobs and its left little to no time for the Capri. Which sadly has been stored for the past two years 100 miles away in my old town. BUT NO MORE! I have just settled and agreement to rent a 2-3 car unit locally with great access and plenty of POWER! which has been my biggest downfall!

So watch out for plenty of updates to come in the near future! Work will re-commence in a few weeks when the car is shipped up here! Mega excited and cannot wait!

Cheers!

So the move over to my new unit has been successful! Its taken some time setting up the workshop ready for the Capri!

Work benches, shelving, storage and of course... a place for the kettle..

Oh and for anyone who was wondering. Its a Honda CBR 400! :D :D

Anyway, after all the prep and setting up was ready it was finally time to move the Capri, after being sat in a damp/leaking council garage for the past 18 months the car was looking pretty bad. it wasn't a pleasant sight. mold was forming on the blooming steering wheel!!! after a quick wipe down a brilliant chap arrived in his low loader to transport her 100 miles north to my new unit! very professional chap by the name of Marcus. If your in the Gloucestershire area and need a car shifted he did a cracking job. very friendly guy. highly recommended. company is called "movemotors" just a heads up.

Fantastic.
Now the work can really begin. the plan is to strip the car in its entirety and as they say at Ford "Fix it right, first time"
So its back to metal on the shell, welding and fabrication followed by a fresh lick of paint. Why bother doing things by halves now i have the space to do a professional job!

Image
Image
Image

The interior is mostly dismantled and removed ready to be stored for the duration of the restoration, wiring loom to come out aswell as a few odds and sods.
I've had a closer look at the roof, which has a few holes in that need attention, however it looks like ill be removing the actual metal frame for the sunroof. which appears to be plug welded to the roof skin, as access is not great and i want to do a thorough job! could be a laugh!

Also had a few issues with it starting. Ran fine when i put it in storage, turned out the ignition wiring had corroded away and broken! followed by no spark caused by too much oxidization on the dizzy cap. which was a relief!

Image

So shes well on the road to resto now! looking forward to getting stuck in. I'm building a car rotisserie to make my life easier, which its self is going to be a bit of a project. Also will be a lot different to the usual builds i'm sure as its going to be build for next to nothing out of euro pallets! so stay tuned for that interesting update it may go horribly wrong!

Thanks for reading chaps,
Questions/Comments welcome as always!
Glad to be back into it!

Nice work and thanks for the thanks you gave back in 2015 for the adjustable tca's. Just fitted mine last week with other bits and bobs. Can't believe I had for soo long.
How long before you reckon you be able to enjoy her again?
Plans have changed to just make a good fun Track Car :)
