This is the news we've been waiting for!
It certainly looks stunning in the photos, the single colour mercury grey paintwork looks awesome.

Forget the jobs on the house, the Capri is now top priority!

All the best,
Andrew.

What with this one and Les's Shelby Grey 3.0

Hi Rob,
Are you taking the Capri to the National?
By my reckoning, it's on the same day as the May meet at Queen Square. If anyone is up for it, we could have a quick visit to Bristol, then drive up to the National.

There's so much to do but yes I'm using the Nationals as my deadline. I'd be up for Bristol on the way up, we could run a post closer to the date, meet at queen square & maybe convoy up from there. Be good to drive in with other forum members.

Hi Des,
The Nationals are held at the CCI headquarters at Badger's Hill, near Evesham.

Hi Rob,
Yes, wouldn't it be brilliant to have a convoy up to Evesham?
I'll start a thread nearer the time to see if I can drum up some interest.

It's taken a rediculous amount of time to get done, talking to friends in work restoring old cars & this seems the norm when trying to chase big outfits to work on your old car when quick turn jobs take priority. A specialist (like caprigear) would no doubt turn a job like this around far quicker but you live & learn..
Dropped by today & caught these pictures of it prior to fitting panels back on, should get it back by the weekend

Rolling shell looking great in its one colour Mercury Grey (now I know what it's actually called..)

Warts & all picture of freshly sprayed spare wheel well, new sound deadening will be added to sides of boot area.

Doors removed to paint door jambs & complete doors, didn't want any old paint visible.

Boot removed for same reason, bonnet, seen behind has received same treatment.

Timing is off as I'm busy on the house at moment, just want to get stuck into the rebuild, but it'll happen soon enough, can't stop smiling now though :D :D :D
I don't know how you've been waiting to get the car to this point but the problem with bodywork is that once you start then you almost always open up a can of worms.
one of the cars I'm currently working on is a Lacquer red 2.8i Special, came in for a wing replacement, bubbling under the strut tops, drivers side rear sill and passenger side lower rear corner.
So far it's had, half of the drivers side sill, most of the drivers inner wing top, strut top plate, underwing support, part of the headlamp bowl and yesterday I investigated some blistering on the front panel and found a repair made of filler and duct tape! Luckily I had a damaged front valance and was able to weld in a fairly large repair section. I suspect that the passenger side will present similar problems.
The point I'm trying to make is that bodywork and paint is by far the most important part of any restoration and if problem areas are found then they have to be dealt with. This will add both time and money to any job but there is no alternative. If the body is not right then everything else is simply a waste of time.
I can understand your frustration at the time taken but the garage has to have a regular cashflow through the business in order to survive.
Getting tied up on longterm jobs doesn't give you the required cashflow in order to survive. At any one time I usually have at least four restorations on the go then there's the smaller rebuild jobs and mail order, occasionally, there's a car to break but not lately.
I'm currently rebuilding a MK2 2.0GL from scratch and it has taken well over two years to get it to where it is now. The bodywork took over one of those years and the paint shop had it for nine months as it kept getting pushed to one side as smaller better paying jobs came in.

Been busy with the Capri lately. After meeting up with Andrew, John, Neil & Mark in the Queen square Bristol meet in April & seeing their great cars in the metal, it was just the inspiration I needed to crack on with mine. A lot has happened since then, I've spent every rare spare moment in the garage slowly emptying the house of Capri interior & spraying all the removed trim (bumpers, window trim, door handles, side trim etc. ) & fitting it back on the car. It's very near getting an MOT now, I've decided to leave cleaning & refurbishing all the suspension items etc. untill the winter months, this way I can get some much needed driving time in the car while there's still a bit of sun around.
I am under no illusion with this car, it's not going to win any prizes but it will put a massive smile on my face & i'm getting nearer having the Capri I initially wanted, just a nice looking car that I'm not afraid to jump in & drive whenever I feel like it. Enough rambling, please see :ford: pictures below :D

Right hand boot liner was split, so was lucky to have been given this marked one for free,
Image

Some plastic filler, primer & grey paint later & it came up well,
Image

Painted left one to match & re-fitted both along with cleaned up washer bottle,
Image

Interior looked like this back in April.
Image

So after seeing the forum members cars, I got stuck in, Dash top & door panels fitted,
Image

Valeted carpets, rear cards & seats in,
Image

Front seats & (out of shot) sunroof, with new seal & headliner fitted,
Image

All dash complete with period radio, new uncut fascia & bargain NOS ashtray now fitted,
Image

Car as it arrived back in rainy January, took a weekend to re-fit doors as wasn't happy with fit. Fiddly job, but worth it,
Image

Newly sprayed Door tops, handles, locks, window trims etc, re-fitted,
Image

And finally, refurbished bumpers, side trim, windows & spoiler fitted,

All that's left for now is fitting wipers & making sure everything works for mot & I can start enjoying it again :D
Thanks for looking,
Rob

Hi Rob,
Superb! :D
Definitely a stunning colour, you've made the right choice in having it painted in one shade all over. I can't wait to see it in the flesh.
Good luck with the MOT, I doubt there will be any issues as you've paid attention to getting the details right.

All the best,
Andrew.

Car is looking amazing. It's been a while since the last updates, but it's good to see the extremely high quality finish to everything you're doing.

Good egg.
