Rob,
Good to see more progress being made. If the car is going to be finished by the end of February, do you have any plans to bring it to Simply Ford? There are lots of people eager to see the finished masterpiece!
All the best,
Andrew.

Hope to get it back re-sprayed by then, still lots of work to do by us after that but if it's home by then, we'll go all out to make the show, going to check on progress this weekend.

Masterpiece ? You have too much faith in me Andrew :D

Here's hoping we get it back in time, good to have something to aim for ..

Cheers,
Rob.

Rob,
How's the resto coming along? Have you got any more photos of progress?

Hi Andrew,
Bodywork resto is painfully slow to be honest, but good work is being done, went to see it yesterday, end of next month completion date still on apparently but can't see it myself ..
Will upload when anything substantial happens :D
While I've been waiting I've been tackling some removed items;
Image
Headlamp rings have been rubbed down & sprayed satin black, the front lights and housings have been cleaned up & given 2 coats of smooth right (they were covered in old waxoyl). The bumper brackets have been blasted & given 2 coats of red oxide & 2 coats of black smooth right, 1 coat too many as it sagged in places, lesson learned! Good you don't see them.
Cleaned up light lenses using tip off youtube, bicarbonate of soda paste first followed by wax polish, took an hour each but came up like new. More to do, just need a car now to screw it all too.

Cheers, Rob.

Rob,
Thanks for the update.

Good tip, they do look like new in your photo. Another job added to my to-do list for the weekend! :)
In fact all the stuff in the photo looks like it just came out the factory, great work.
The end of February is only 5 weeks away, not too much time to get everything prepared ready to re-assemble.
All the best,
Andrew.

Thanks Toby, coming together painfully slowly :( Progress is being made though.

Andrew, I've added the below photos taken a few weeks ago, as you can see, it still exists, plenty of promises being made on dates, good thing it's not a daily :D

Drivers side arch repairs, bought 2 sets per side, so doubling up on inner arch after cutting out rot. Arches will be seam sealed, waxoyled & under sealed when done.

(Pictures updated 2/9/15)

Inner arch required patching, now under sealed, going to waxoyl all cavities & re-underseal whole floor including arches once I get it back.

Image

Image

Both scuttle edges required cutting out & building up in fresh metal.

Image

Image

Bonnet solid except for leading edge, a patch either side of centre was welded in, skimmed & is being rubbed down to check for correct profile.

Image

Image

Driver side wing had filler repair removed, patch repair & primer, passenger wing had no filler & next to no rot, requiring just a tiny patch on leading edge & a similar one on lower rear edge.

Just added these few extra shots as car is moving along at a ( fast snail's) pace now ;)
Rear arches, front wings, scuttle & front end of bonnet have completed weld repairs & are now at long last being rubbed down & prepped for painting, this might actually happen this year ...

Cheers,
Rob.

Thanks Rob,
It's frustrating, as you've got your parts all cleaned, refurbed and nicely painted but nothing to screw them back onto.....yet.
As long as you get the car back so you and the lads can enjoy it in the summer, that's the main thing.
I'll stop pestering you about updates now, it'll be finished when it's finished! :)

All the best,
Andrew.

Just a quick update, I've added a few pictures (above), to show some progress is actually being made, must be the most long winded body repairs this year :) . Capri is getting close now to getting a final detailed rub down & initial coat of primer to check for any imperfections, then on with the top coat, going to go with it's Titan Grey top coat all over, if I decide to two tone it I can at a later date but fancy one colour for now. Have collected all little bits of trim I wanted now, looking forward to getting it back so the long build up can commence :D

Cheers,
Rob

Hi Rob,
At least nobody can accuse this resto of being a rush job! :D
Progress is being made, and you haven't found any real horrors lurking underneath the paint, so it's all good.
I can't wait to see the finished job, perhaps at a show next year?

All the best,
Andrew.

Hi Rob,
You've got to aim for completion in time for the Capri Nationals in May. :D

Painting the car titan grey all over is a good decision, I think.

All the best,
Andrew.

Hi Rob,
I'm looking forward to seeing the end results here. I think you're making the right decision to drop the two tone look. I've got to hand it to you, you must have the patience of a saint. I couldn't be without my Capri for a week let alone the time you've been waiting.

All the best

At (very) long last (drum roll please :D )the Capri has been resprayed ! It's taken a rediculous amount of time to get done, talking to friends in work restoring old cars & this seems the norm when trying to chase big outfits to work on your old car when quick turn jobs take priority. A specialist (like caprigear) would no doubt turn a job like this around far quicker but you live & learn..
Dropped by today & caught these pictures of it prior to fitting panels back on, should get it back by the weekend

Rolling shell looking great in its one colour Mercury Grey (now I know what it's actually called..)

Image

Warts & all picture of freshly sprayed spare wheel well, new sound deadening will be added to sides of boot area.

Image

Doors removed to paint door jambs & complete doors, didn't want any old paint visible.

Image

Boot removed for same reason, bonnet, seen behind has received same treatment.

Image

Timing is off as I'm busy on the house at moment, just want to get stuck into the rebuild, but it'll happen soon enough, can't stop smiling now though :D :D :D

Hi Rob,
This is the news we've been waiting for!
It certainly looks stunning in the photos, the single colour mercury grey paintwork looks awesome.

Forget the jobs on the house, the Capri is now top priority!

All the best,
Andrew.
