Over the winter touch up
and probably a bit longer but I'll see.
With the frost approaching I just can't bear to think about the skill of other road users and amount of salt all over, a mate mentioned a space is opening up in a workshop so I'm going to have a nice dry place I can work on my car. Already have plenty of bits to put on but I think I'm going to just give everything a clean and paint on the underside.
I have 2 new single leafs to go on
2 new 1" lower coil springs for the front
4 new dampers
full polybush set
electronic ignition kit
exhaust manifold and system
new alternator
tailgate ready painted (looks better than the rest of the car)
some bmw headlights
centre console
type 9 + prop to match
Had some of the bits for quite a while but just not got round to doing any work but it's picking up now. I think once I get the underseal off and the suspension parts on I'll try and get some form of axle location done.
Did what I could tonight in the garage
Wire brushed the frame
zinc primered and stonechipped the leaf shackles and springs
had to press out the rubber bushes with a vice and some sockets my dad thankfully borrowed from the pit all those years ago
job satisfaction
I am going to see a friend at a garage tomorrow to give me hand with my exhaust manifold studs since they'll most likely shear. needs doing though want to get it through the MOT before I take it to bits.

Re: Over the winter touch up
Not alot happened yet but I finally have the car in a garage, took a few boxes of parts through and I hope to get cracking soon.

Re: Over the winter touch up
still not too much going on, the roof of the garage is leaking horribly which is a massive motivation killer.
got the rear axel off, quite a few bolts sheared, everything was siezed. Gonna start cleaning it all up ready for the new bits to go on.
even when all bolts were out it still didnt want to come out
left to dry

Re: Over the winter touch up
pretty much all the rear bolted together minus the ARB, it was just twisting when i tried to take the ends off. I don't know wheter to dive in on the front suspension or to go for a blast to satisfy myself.

Re: Over the winter touch up
yeah just a tin of hammerite brushed on, I did my propshaft months ago and it still looks new so I decided to use it again.

Moved onto the front finally
Can't wait to have a blast it's gonna feel like a different car with the state of all the parts I've renewed.

Update, waiting on some braided brake lines before I put it all back together but there's not alot to do now. Some pics throughout and a panorama of my unit in case anyone wants a neb.

The car is looking good, bet you can't wait to get it back on the road!
I wish I had a nice large space to work on the car like you've got there, thanks for letting us have a "neb" (I must admit I've never even heard the word before and had to look it up!)
All the best,
Andrew.

Re: Over the winter touch up
Hi
I am just at a similar stage with my car, spent last 8 weekend stripping off all underseal, cutting out floor rust and piecing in replacement pieces from a donor car so profiles of floor still looks the same. I am debating with myself how to retreat floor and main items like axle, gearbox, etc when I start rebuilding in next couple of weeks. I have used on other parts the spray hammerite that needs no undercoat which seemsvto work well or I have got the rustbuster products which I was thinking of using, along with an initial coat of etch primer..
Any advice welcome

Re: Over the winter touch up
Cheers lads, I haven't actually done a lot of rust removal and prevention so I can't give too much advice but I think if you have etch primer then put that on. I used brush on hammerite for my axle, gearbox, prop and various crossmembers. The prop was painted months ago and it still looks fresh.
I rebuilt the brakes, dropped it on the floor and torqued up various things. Freed off the drums, bled them all multiple times (needs doing again) and took it to get the toe set right. then I drove home and put my "minilights" on.

Re: Over the winter touch up
Haven't posted in a while, not too much is happening at the minute. My oil burning was getting worse so I thought if I need to do stemn oil seals I might as well stick a 2 litre cam in.
the valves were in pretty minging state, I didnt take a pic after I cleaned them.
didnt drain the coolant and filled the bores cause I'm a top tit
plenty of assembly grease(jam) everywhere
painted the rocker cover and pulley while I was at it
and the car got it's first polish in at least 7 years
went to a couple of shows, here it is next to my mates mk2 escort at the RSOC show at croft
and next to the common stuff that turns up at these silly new car shows
I also bought this shed a few weeks ago but I'm not posting much yet

Re: Over the winter touch up
i love what you've done with the car fancy a swap it looks absolutely stunning now the original colours come up a treat and the minilite alloys compliment the car beautifully
Re: Over the winter touch up
haha I'm keeping this for life. The paint looks better in pictures than in person sadly, the wings are all scratched off (im guessing) the previous owner working on it and there is a nice splodge of hammerite on one where some dick threw a stone off it and took it to bare metal.

Good luck with gearbox swop, that unit looks handy, dry & spacious. Not jealous at all!

Re: Over the winter touch up
Hi,
I agree with Rob about the workshop, that space would be just right for my car. Got room for one more in there?
Are you still working on the Chevette project?
Andrew.

Re: Over the winter touch up
Hi guys, the unit is brilliant but it's not as dry as you'd hope. There is room for one more car but my mates s14 is going in that space haha. I do plan to work on the chevette but the capri is my priority. The chevette needs so much work but I'm not gonna give in and scrap it like people keep telling me to do. I've been looking at a lot of projects online and they've given me confidence. I emptied the fuel tank on the capri yesterday and got a nice mouthfull of petrol, hoping the rust isn't too bad.
The centre of the car doesnt look too bad but the rear looks a bit scabby

As an ex-Chevette owner I'd be interested to see how work progresses on that as well as the Capri. Only 250 of all variants licensed now.
