I used that textured paint on my bumper ends too. Used a plastic primer then textured paint, as you say, the finish is excellent. Your final picture looks like a brand new pair. Can't go wrong for the price of paint & some elbow grease. Nice job.

Re: capri 1.6GL bareshell rebuild
Thanks chaps. Well I have been stripping the bonnet ready for repairs. The problem I have is that under the leading edge the old tin worm had created a couple of holes. Same position on each side and it looks like the was a bulge like it had some drain holes possibly? It might just have blown with the rust. I wondered if anyone could shed some light on this for me as I would like to recreate what was there originally
As I say could be nothing but just wanted to be sure.

Re: capri 1.6GL bareshell rebuild
Ok so just a quick update. I have been working on the bonnet leading edge and I know I was advised not to bother too much with the detail like the depressions for the bonnet trim but the perfectionist in me wanted to try to recreate it as original as possible so this has taken a little time and a little over engineering so it's not done yet but here are a few pics to wet the appetite.
Obviously the rot was quite well established
So I have folded a new piece ready
And I have made a fixture for for chasing down the depression. It still needs welding and a couple of supports for either side of the depression to reduce any buckling of the metal.
I know it is perhaps a little excessive however I do like to try to get things as accurate as possible so if I can I will

Got there in the end with the images. Well just a little update as foul weather stops play. Managed to get the bumper end brackets done and think they will look rather smart once painted up. Will continue on the small off car stuff over winter while I continue to try and negotiate a dry workshop for the body.

Re: capri 1.6GL bareshell rebuild
Ok so a couple of updated images. I have started doing some work on the wing that was accident damaged and someone had covered in rough filler. Behind it was dented and a bit battered however tapped out quite well. It's not perfect yet but only a thin skin of filler was required to get to this stage. Bit more fettling to do and I think I will be quite happy. (I appreciate updates are slow coming but I like to think I put up all the detail I can as and when I do anything)

Re: capri 1.6GL bareshell rebuild
Cheers took a couple of days to get it to this stage and I think I might take it back again and stretch the metal out a little more to get the crease line better but for a first attempt at panel repair i am quite pleased with it and the perfectionist in me enjoys the process

When you can take your time on it and get it straight I know what you mean, so satisfying when it's finally smooth and straightian_s wrote: ↑Tue May 14, 2019 10:56 am Cheers took a couple of days to get it to this stage and I think I might take it back again and stretch the metal out a little more to get the crease line better but for a first attempt at panel repair i am quite pleased with it and the perfectionist in me enjoys the process

Re: capri 1.6GL bareshell rebuild
Ok so I have started to tackle the front valance as it is rotten in the usual places. I did look online for a replacement I quickly decided that a replacement wasnt necessary and decided on reflection mine was repairable. Now I haven't done any panel forming before and this is a learning curve for me but I am really rather pleased with the results so far. I have cut out the end section of the lower valance and will patch repair where necessary. I haven't done the end all in one section as I will weld different parts together to make the job less complicated.

Cheers. Yeah I can justify the cost knowing how much it cost to make good quality tooling and dividing that up among how many you will likely sell etc etc but I cant justify it personally. I think if you are willing to learn from others have a bit of time and patience and little skill most things can be achieved.

Hi,
I love what you're doing here. So often we see restoration threads where the end product looks a bit iffy, but that is definitely not the case here. All your work looks absolutely top notch.
Andrew.
