Yeah, unfortunately thats the trouble with living in the best country in the world, you are a long way away from parts you want. Heres how it works out. Kit = $525 pounds, exchange rate is currently 50 cents NZ to 1 pound, so that makes the kit $1050 NZD. Freight is $350 pounds, so $700 NZD, plus GST (same as VAT) of 15% = $2012. And undoubtdly there will be some other customs charge in there that I've forgotten about. Have thought about getting a fibreglasser to knock one up, but you could spend the same amount of money paying someone to create such a kit, but it still wouldnt be the same as a genuine one, and you have paid the same amount of money.

Little bit more progress, have been playing with brakes lately. If you cant be bothered reading back, I have installed a Mazda RX7 front subframe in my capri. A mate of mine who a similar setup in his capri found that you can install Mitsi Evo 9 Brembos with a minimum fuss, so I decided to give it a go! So here is the standard disc and caliper, still reasonable size with 4 pot calipers.

Image

And here is the new Brembo caliper beside the old Mazda one. Bigger IS better!

Image

And the discs.....

Image

So the easiest brake conversion in the world goes like this. The outside of the disc needs to be machined down by about 3 mm, and the inside of the disc needs to be machined out by 2.8mm. Then the stub needs to have the threaded holes that the caliper bolts to drilled out with a 12mm drill.

Image

Then install the discs (same stud pattern as Mazda, so they slip straight on), then bolt the calipers to the stub axle. Brembos have the threads in the calipers.
Image

Image

And finally, wheels back on with the cool calipers peeking through the spokes.

Image

Overall costs were pretty good too, discs were $35 bucks each, calipers were $400 for the set. Brake pads are yet to buy, but they wont be too cheap, I want to install Endless pads, they were at least $300 for a set. Only took about an hour to do both sides, so pretty easy overall.

Progress is slow but steady, X pack kit has arrived from the uk, currently being installed, new front valance is all mounted up, dash is being flocked, spraypainter lined up ready to go. Have stuck a whole heap more steel into the rollcage, especially in the front strut area, welded up all the holes in the engine bay, plus a heap more.

This build is the reason I got another Capri. Didn't realise it was on here that I saw it. Thanks for the inspiration. Good work!

Thanks guys, its good to get feedback! To be honest, I'd kinda given up on the thread as it didnt seem anyone was looking at it, and I've been doing all my posting on an Aussie forum thats a bit closer to home. Have a look here if youre interested. http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthread.php?t=11369921
I'll throw some stuff up here as well though, if people are into it.

Latest progress, X pack kit on, engine in, more roll cage toobs, front valance mounted, wheel spacers on, BBS rims on, 9 inch wide at rear, 8 at the front.

Hello!
I have a question about the front suspension.
What is the distance between the original attach points for the front engine mount member? How wide is it between those?
I am looking into same possibilities on my old :ford: 20M...

Best regards

I cut into the subframe, and welded a piece of angle iron at the same width as the chassis rails into it. I then cut into the chassis to make a straight line for the angle iron to mount up to. Then I welded crush tubes into the chassis rail vertically, and drilled holes for the subframe to mount to the chassis. Hope that helps.

Well, actually I am looking into putting a Capri crossmember on my old Cologne machine, so thats why I need the width of the Capri front, to compare.

Well best you get busy with a tape measure then.

Latest progress is slow but steady. The kit is all fitted, but have got a problem with the r/f guard. Will report on the solution to that one once it has been rectified......
Made up some new 4mm plates for the floor that the rear subframe mounts to today, and stitch welded them into place. Also plug welded them so should be pretty strong now. I've started to make the box to hold the jaz fuel cell into place, it also houses the fuel pump and filters. As it is in the cabin space, it has to be air tight so no fumes come into the car. Bottom half is made, top half and bracketry yet to be sorted. I've ordered the hub adaptors for the front wheels, they should be here sometime this week, that will get the BBS rims out to the outside of the guards and away from the struts. they were a bit close, and I havent fitted the big tyres yet, so wanted a bit more clearance. Photos to come tomorrow.

Not much progress, a new baby and another project car, along with an increase work has slowed/halted progress to a stop. I got a refund from smith and dekin for the right hand guard, there's had very little bulge in it, and didn't even cover the wheel. He's not going to fix his moulds either, so I guess he will stop selling the kit. Says he's in his 70s now, so would never get the investment back on it. I'm thinking about mothballing the car for a while until we buy a new house with a garage, so then I can continue building it at home, I just can't seem to get the time during the day nowadays.
