Re: Black 2.8 project
The garage thing cost more than the car! The car with spare parts cost £500 when I bought it.mgentry90 wrote:great project, keep up the work. how much did the garage thing cost to glue together?
The roof is relatively expensive as I used polycarbonate sheets and the proper joining strips etc. The timber is all treated timber as its partially open to the weather. I forget the exact cost but it could have been done cheaper although its surprising how quick costs add up when you include gravel, sub base, post set etc

Re: Black 2.8 project
Bit cold for body work today so popped into the garage to make a start on the engine. The previous owner told me he had cleaned the sludge out of the sump and he removed the core plugs and gave me a new set to put in but I thought I would strip the engine as I have no real idea what he had done. So, sump off

Looks like the inside could do with a bit of a clean although a brand new thermostst housing has been fitted which will save a few quid

Crank liberated
DSCF4320 by Peter Smith, on Flickr
Pistons needing a bit of a clean and they;ll get some new rings which I bought a few months ago
DSCF4321 by Peter Smith, on Flickr
Bare block ready for cleaning. It will get painted up too.
DSCF4322 by Peter Smith, on Flickr
Found that the connecting sleeves from the block to water pump housing had corroded
DSCF4323 by Peter Smith, on Flickr
22mm pipe was too small but 22mm pipe connectors, cut down and lightly sanded are perfect

This is looking great. How do you clean some of these parts? they come up like new. Are they shot blasted or just plain old elbow grease? Great job cant wait to see the engine back in.

Cheers mate
Good old elbow grease is the answer - thinners or WD40 and a toothbrush, some fine wet and dry and brasso wadding on the bearings. Getting there slowly

Don't know if it will be done that soon Dan. The 2.8 engine is all knew to me and was largely stripped when I bought it so I'm assembling from boxes of parts - which all need a damn good clean to boot! And if spring showed any chance of turning up I might make a bit more progress toolooking good peter now you can say you,ve put blood sweat and tears into the project will she be ready for CRAP
Any way, to help the engine rebuild I bought an engine stand
