Black 2.8 project

Post by Peter-S »

Took delivery of a 2.8 tioday. Has been off the road for many years with a lot of parts stripped out and interior sold on :(
Looks a bit rough around the edges as years under a tarp have not done the paint any favours but its supposedly a genuine 65k car and was only a mile down the road so I couldn't resist.
It will take a good while to sort but most of the usual grot areas are good:

Offside floor - dusty but solid

ImageDSCF1866 by Peter Smith, on Flickr

Offside A post - surface rust only from a rusty door (spare door came with it)

ImageDSCF1867 by Peter Smith, on Flickr

Nearside floor

ImageDSCF1869 by Peter Smith, on Flickr

Nearside A post

ImageDSCF1868 by Peter Smith, on Flickr

Driver's wing needs a repair

ImageDSCF1870 by Peter Smith, on Flickr

Front has a little rust but doesn't appear to have gone through

ImageDSCF1886 by Peter Smith, on Flickr

Nearside is all good

ImageDSCF1880 by Peter Smith, on Flickr

ImageDSCF1881 by Peter Smith, on Flickr

Rear quarters

ImageDSCF1876 by Peter Smith, on Flickr

ImageDSCF1871 by Peter Smith, on Flickr

Rear arches

ImageDSCF1879 by Peter Smith, on Flickr

ImageDSCF1872 by Peter Smith, on Flickr

Strust tops look a bit crusty but it is just surface rust and they are solid

ImageDSCF1887 by Peter Smith, on Flickr

ImageDSCF1888 by Peter Smith, on Flickr

Battery tray a bit rough along the edge

ImageDSCF1889 by Peter Smith, on Flickr

Boot floor is also only suffering surface rust

ImageDSCF1891 by Peter Smith, on Flickr

Corner of the hatch has some rust but it came with a spare although I may keep thie original

ImageDSCF1892 by Peter Smith, on Flickr

Under the back has already been cleaned and poly bushed but the lowering blocks are probably coming out

Hi Andrew,

Not much interior present but I have most of it as spares, including a reasonable set of shark greys I picked up last year. Hasn't got all the headlights but I have a a few of those too but I will need to get hold of a tank, prop and rad. But I know a man who can help me there :)
The rest is mainly in several boxes that will doubtless take a while to sort out. Lucky there's no rush!

Started cleaning the front of the offside wing and it does seem basically sound. Also cleaned out the headlamp bowl which is remarkably rusty afree as well :)

Nearside bowl was a bit crusty in the corner but hasn't spread to the wing

ImageDSCF1897 by Peter Smith, on Flickr

A bit of grinding and dodgy welding later and it was plated and primed

ImageDSCF1898 by Peter Smith, on Flickr

ImageDSCF1900 by Peter Smith, on Flickr

Slam panel looked like someone had dropped an engine on it :o

ImageDSCF1899 by Peter Smith, on Flickr

Fortunately I could fit a crow bar through the holes in the valance and by applying pressure to the bar with the trolley jack I've levered most of the damage out. It will need a light skim but looks the right shape now.

Good work Peter... What's the antirust stuff you are using there? Is it Ferozinc?

Nice to see some solid genuine wings there, are the backs of them and the drip rails ok too?

Looks like the paint has flaked off in quite a few places around the engine bay... what's your plan for it? Touch up with some rattle cans for now? Or planning a respray?

Hi Chris.
I'm using Rustbuster's Fe-123 Molecular Rust Converter as it won a Practical Classics product test.

Drip rails are good, this is nearside

ImageDSCF1911 by Peter Smith, on Flickr

There are odd issues. The gutters have been chaffed by the tarp

ImageDSCF1906 by Peter Smith, on Flickr

and have surface rust although they have cleaned up pretty well.

The lower front valence appears to have run into a bank or something at some point. I'm thinking I might need a spoiler, lol!

ImageDSCF1908 by Peter Smith, on Flickr

I'm gradually cleaning the bay up and its getting the rattle can treatment but the car will need a proper spray but it will be a good while before it gets that far.

Most of my free time of late has been spent moving fences, making gates and clearing space in the garden so I can erect a covered area for the old girl as she can't stay in the garage all the while so progress is minimal at the moment.

Been tinkering on and off, rust proofing inner arches and stuff that you can't really see.
Got a battle scar at the back to sort out some time

ImageDSCF1925 by Peter Smith, on Flickr

Boot wheel well not too bad. Pitted but solid.

ImageDSCF1924 by Peter Smith, on Flickr

Engine bay has progressed

ImageDSCF1927 by Peter Smith, on Flickr

But a lot of recent spare time has been spent building a covered area outside as she can't stay in the garage for the time this is likely to take. Moved her out today.

Thanks Craig, it's not too bad for an engine bay anyway.
Yeah, diy job with the help of a few rattle cans :)

That's coming along very nicely Peter. A resprayed engine bay is a satisfying transformation indeed!

Limited free time at the moment. Capri number 1 took up most of it over the last week so I've been restricted to component refurbing when I've had the odd hour or so

Haven't been able to do anything again until this month then it turned too cold to even paint stuff in the garage some of the time
Anyway made a bit more progress with odds and ends

Had a bit more time over the weekend so took the offside strut out. Considering all the split pins were rusted solid it came out relatively easily. Needs a good clean though

ImageDSCF1977 by Peter Smith, on Flickr

Still, I'll be happy if the other end of the arb is as pristine as theis side
