Its still on going!! Unfortunately work got in the way big time, so progress has been very slow.

Transmission tunnel is all but finished, along with gearbox mountings. Engine and box are both now mounted in place, and currently playing around with the ride height/suspension geometry.

Now going coilover etc at the rear, and once setup, will be making custom steel arches (hopefully!) to suit the wheels/ride height.

Will post up more pics when I can find em :)

Cheers
Ahh, interesting. So you're not going the X-Pack route any more then. I'm going to need to modify an X-Pack kit to fit what I plan to do. Steel would be nice. I have considered it but I know it's out of my skill range (cardboard and sticky tape) so I won't attempt it without precedence. Maybe you could do a tutorial during the construction of your arches. If you're feeling generous.

This build is awesome so far. I hope you get more time to finish.

Can't believe its been on the go for that long.........

To cut a VERY long story short, after a lot of changes (moving premises twice!!, and withdrawing from another business), I have managed to get my enthusiasm back, and start spending some time back on the Capri.

I lifted the engine up a touch, and changed the cross member to a 2.0, so I could use the manual rack.

This meant I needed to repair the gearbox tunnel again, and fabricate/move the gearbox mounting brackets. I used the bottom half of the existing brackets, and fabricated a new top piece, to fit the repaired tunnel.

Marking out first.

Image

Support plates were tacked to hold both parts together prior to welding.

Image
Image

I then spot welded some strengthening plate.

Image

The bracket was then self tapped then tacked and welded into position.

glad to see this is still happening,

I found parking a bit of a work-out with the standard 2L manual rack & a 200kg motor, but then there wasn't room for a P/S rack in mine.

keep up the good work!

Tried going with a more factory look to the gearbox bracket. Originally for a Mustang, it would not allow the gearbox to sit high enough, so made a support brace first to support the gearbox, then cut down the bracket.

Image

Then bolted the mounting faces, and bolted then to the body gearbox brackets.

Image

Image

Image

Once bolted in place, it was a case of bridging the gaps to form the complete bracket.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Then grind back the welds, and a spot of zinc primer

More updates next week, hopefully!!

With the gearbox in for the umpteenth time, its time to start fettling the transmission tunnel....

Image

Image

Image

Its a bit tight with the heater box, but hopefully should go back in...............

Image

Still a bit of trimming on the tunnel to do, but once the ride height has finally been set, and rear axle clearance set, the I can stitch everything up between tunnel/prop/ rear tunnel.

Hi Kev,

Good to see you are getting back on this project. 4 years? You sure it's not a bit more? :poke:

Just leaving the tunnel loose for now until I have set the ride height, just in case I need to alter the floor/chassis at the rear, then I can tie it all in together.

Well that's the plan anyway!!

In the mean time, I have made some adjustable "rear coilovers". Well its a bit of box section, drilled with some threaded bar, and nuts!!

It is a bit crude, but helps setting the rear ride height, without resorting to trial and error with lowering blocks etc. I have removed the rear shockers, and replaced them with the box section/threaded bar. All i need to do is tighten / slacken the top nut to achieve the desired height.

Once I am happy, then I can get the rear coilovers made up to the correct length.

Its only cost £12 for materials, but at least gives you a chance to play around a bit :)/>

Getting somewhere near for the height, but need correct overall diameter tyre to be sure.

Needed to get some wheels which were much nearer to what I needed. Could'nt wait for 17's for mock up, so went with 15's, and changed the size/profile of the tyre to compensate.Might need to go a little wider at the rear......

Image

Image

Image

Nice to get it on 4 wheels again (even if only temporary), make sure i have not "overdone" the lowering....

Image

Image

Could'nt help fitting the doors, and wing........

Image

Just trimmed enough off the wing so it would clear the wheels

Starting to look more like a car. Not going X pack anymore (anyone know how to change the title of the thread?). Just taped some Zakspeed arches on for effect, but will be looking to do something similar in steel, with a different front spoiler.

A quick photoshop of the wheels

It looks amazing! But the ultimate choice of wheels don't suit it at all in my humble onion :?

Thanks :)

Wheels are a bit blingy to be honest (and may need more dish, and darker paint), but I'm not the best photoshopper to be honest, lol

Give it another 6 months, and I will have probably changed them again....

Very Spooky !

I got back on this just last week. Got a bit side tracked with another project (Ranchero)

Image

I needed to re think the front suspension geometry ets, with having it so low, but starting to get round it now (possibly shorter strut inserts), along with maybe cranked steering arms/ re drilling crossmember, lifting engine a little etc.

I might get this finished before I am 60........
