V8 32V Zakspeed
Finally got the project up and running, after false starts, being dropped in the proverbial, etc, etc.
Started out by fitting a SBC 350 with T56 box, but the "person" doing the work on the car carried out sub standard repairs just prior to him closing his workshop and emigrating......
However, was eventually introduced to a guy who has worked on Hotrods for years, as well as Astons and other prestige makes. He agreed to take the project on. I opted for a Ford 4.6 32V Cobra motor with 6 speed (t56) box.
Although the spec is developing as i go along, it has the Caprisport Brembo 300 brake upgrade, coilovers, Jag solid rear axle with locker diff and rear discs.
The body is fitted with Fibresports X Pack (first ones produced since the fire, sent my old kit to help with making new moulds), also have a Mach 1 Mustang bonnet scoop fitted.
Very brief i know, but will go into more detail as the build progresses.Have uploaded plenty of pics, but may be a month before the next lot.....
Had a quick mock up of ride height to check clearance for tyres as well as x member and sump clearance. With a shallower sump, we may need to avoid chopping away at the x member, although the power rack may well have to go!
Rear tyres at the minute are 255 x 40 x 17, but the fronts are borrowed 205 x 50 x 17, but the 50 profile does not work/look right, but at least it gives an idea (probably go to 40/45 for the profile).
Looks like the rear may need to come down a touch (weight of interior etc may well do that), but we shall see
Sorry, did not get a chance of a piccie before this floor section and chassis was repaired.
If you are fortunate to be in a position to remove the underseal , then do it, it hides a mulitude of sins........found this bit of grot under mint underseal...
A bit of strengthening to the chassis
General cleaning up
Had a little play with photoshop to help choose wheels.......

Re: V8 32V X Pack
Looks like some nice tidy repairs there.
Love the choice of engine! So many cheap tuning parts available for those, and plenty of power and torque out of the box.

Re: V8 32V X Pack
Yeah love the Falcon style bonnet, really looks the part. And your inner wing... so solid and shiny and new, it's like a treasure chest!
I'm the one who leaves all those shoes in the carriageway.

Re: V8 32V X Pack
Well i took a big deep breath and decided that i could not trust the previous work done, especially the fitting of the x pack, so decided to strip everything off (i still cry now!! the x pack panels were brand new....) and soda blast the shell. Good job i did remove the rear x pack, the repairs behind were never treated, and just left as bare metal!!
Then a quick coat of etch primer, applied by my brother
Once all the fabrication is done, then i will go back to fitting the engine etc

Re: V8 32V X Pack
Wow! Maximum respect, great pictures. Fantastic to see the shell getting sorted properly there, its going to last for years before you need to worry about rust again.
While you've got it all stripped are you going to strengthen it any? I was reading one of the books about strengthening an escort shell by seam welding the joins and welding in gussets. Might be a good idea while you have it all stripped seeing as you are fitting a monster of an engine.

Kev,
It's 2 steps backwards and 1 step in etc.
Probably best that you went back and sorted the first work carried out for piece of mind.
Nothing wrong with shot blasting the metal work, I had good results over 20 years back that never came back to haunt me. Worst that could happen other than loads of unexpected work was distortion of the panels.
I've heard good and bad things about the chemical stripping processes. I've seen what the acid dip did to some of my rusty old tools. Clean metal, so it must be how quick the water dip can be drained and E coated and how the car is stored.
Acid dip does work though.
Best get that roll over jig spun a good few times though. You'll be playing the how much shot will come back out game for a while. If you don't any air during painting will find it.

Cheers Matt
Yes, the body was spun round many times ( cue spit roasting jokes!!!) and the soda just kept appearing from nowhere.
Luckily we did not generate much heat, i have had a quick check, and no signs of distortion.
You are right about going backwards, but there would be nothing worse than having finished just to start all over again....with any luck , i only ever want to do this once.
Give me a shout if you want to pop into the bodyshop, i will put kettle on!
cheers

I'll get in touch soon, it'll be good to see what progress you've made regarding all the other issues.
Oh and if your lower rear quarter panels need repairs prior to the new "X" pack kit they are full of expanding foam. The area next to your fuel tank filler has some in the pictures.
I've still got your email address if that's not changed over the years.

Re: V8 32V X Pack
Just a liitle progress this week.
Axle has now been trial fitted. Managed to get a 3:77 locker diff, along with watts linkage. Will be making mounts etc later, then taking back out for blasting and powder coating. Probably going to have springs de-cambered, and remove blocks.
Engine is finally in !!!! well "in place" more like. Had to change the sump for an ally one (oil pick up pipe to be changed to suit sump), so it would sit below the bonnet!
The cross member is giving about 6" ground clearance, and at the minute, the sump gives just over 3"........................might have to have a think about this. Looks like the engine could go up about 1.5", making things a bit more practical.
Once i have decided on the engine height, then time to fabricate engine mounts, and install gearbox. The fun should then start with the steering !! lol

That engine makes a nice change to the 3.5 rover with the carbs on top. looks so modern yet fitting in a capri.
good work on the repairs, hope they see you through a lot of fun.

Re: V8 32V X Pack
Hi
Its still on going!! Unfortunately work got in the way big time, so progress has been very slow.
Transmission tunnel is all but finished, along with gearbox mountings. Engine and box are both now mounted in place, and currently playing around with the ride height/suspension geometry.
Now going coilover etc at the rear, and once setup, will be making custom steel arches (hopefully!) to suit the wheels/ride height.
Will post up more pics when I can find em
Cheers
