My Mk1 Resto.
I'll be first then
I bought this car a couple of years ago, but due to other commitments haven't been able to get on with it.
It was stripped of paint before I got it, and has spent the last 2 years under a sheet.
The resulting surface rust is not good, but nowhere near as bad I expected.
So for now, I am busy getting it back shiny. Nearly there as far as that goes.
This is how it was at the weekend.
This is how it is now.
Then covered over with Kurust to stop the tinworm.
(I assume it is OK to put a Mk1 on the Laser forum. If it isn't just say so)

Of course it is. Laser Page is just the name, all Capris, and most anything else really, are welcome. Looks like a good project. I'd love a mk1 one day.Dave wrote:I'll be first then

Re: My Mk1 Resto.
Thanks for the interest mate, much appreciated.
This one went into the shed at the weekend, and is booked in at a RR in October.
I am serious too. In the past I have always been able to say that nobody other than me has done anything to the cars, this time I have gone mad and a very nice man is building an engine for me.
The car started off as a 1600, my plan was to fit a 3litre Essex. I even got as far as buying an engine. Due to me doing long distances in my cars regularly, CF tours, 500 mile round trips at weekends etc, I changed my mind again. The price of fuel although now falling has got a bit silly. So, EFI Pinto it is. If for no other reason, just to keep the EFI questions going on the Laserpages.

Re: My Mk1 Resto.
I'm very flattered by your kind words Thanks.
I have been doing some more tonight cleaning up the rear panel.
Took the lights and bumber off. I think there must have been some of the original primer on the car, as it hadn't rusted much despite having no paint on it for 2 years.
Using various tools I cleaned it back to bare metal
Then using a cloth, I wiped it over with Kurust. I prefer to use a cloth, even though the instructions say use a brush. Using a brush puts too much on in my opinion, and I will sand it again before etch priming. Too much on there and it is a bugger to sand.
You can see a small patch that I missed. That shows what the Kurust does. It changes any oxidation (rust) into a phosphate layer (think that's right) which stops any more rust forming.
I have used this method before and it works very well.
Generally it is very sound, there are one or two bits I will have to repair. Nothing compared to the usual rotters I mess with though.

Re: My Mk1 Resto.
The orchard is calling me. They are nearly ready.
Still pottering away at the car.
I managed to get the engine bay tidied up a bit.
Inner wings are in spectacularly good condition, just needed shining up.
Not a job I particularly enjoy, but I am getting there.
One very noticeable thing about the Capri, I can actually get in the engine bay and work from there.
I really need to tidy my shed up first, there is so much junk lying around I am going to break my neck!
More good news, the very nice man that is building my engine is really getting on with it. Should be done well before I am.

Re: My Mk1 Resto.
Looks like a lovely job there mate. I know what you are saying about tidying up your shed. My garage is a total death trap after a few days of hard work. Tools, sharp metal off cuts everywhere.

Re: My Mk1 Resto.
I have masked most of it ready for the first bits of paint.
I masked the boot, then spent at least 20 minutes looking for the masking tape.
I eventually realised the only place it could possibly be was in the boot.
Had to rip into it to get it out.

Re: My Mk1 Resto.
I can laugh, I spent 20 mins looking for the screwdriver in my hand once.

Looking for goggles that are on top of my head are another one.
That is not as embarrassing as walking into a shop with them still on top of my head though

Re: My Mk1 Resto.
Sorry mate, it shows how long since I ventured into this section.butler2.8i wrote:Any updates dave ???
I have been busy this last couple of weeks and have actually started doing something to it.
Skip a few months of complete inactivity and it is now in black primer. I decided on black.
An engine is being built for it again. The last one ended up in my Escort by accident but the next is well on its way.
2.1 and a bit pinto, offset crank with crossflow rods, a FR32 cam, ported head with bigger inlets and a fiddled with 32/36 carb.
I will let you know when more is done, but for now.
