Another update.

I rubbed the whole lot down which took bloody ages!
Too many wierd and wonderful shapes.
Eventually got to the point where i could spray it and then totally and completely fooked it up. What a goddamned mess!

So, back to square one and rubbing it down again. The one consolation was the guy in the paintshop said there were a lot with the same problem and it was due to the weather.
Probably a complete lie but it made me feel a bit better

Thank you gentlemen.

I have done an enormous amount of work on the car over the last few weeks. Hours upon hours of messing about with sandpaper, filler, primer, paint and cutting compound. It beats the Hell out of me why I do it, but there you go.
As I said, I had a disastrous episode of painting the shell and completely ballsed it up. I rubbed the whole lot back down again and tried again. It was a lot better this time. Not perfect, but better.
I then went on to flatting it back and then mopping it. (both completely new experiences for me) The mopping wasn't what I expected, and left the paintwork looking almost like it had bloomed.
I then sprayed the doors, they came out just like I hoped. Not 100% perfect, but as close to it as I am ever likely to get. So was proper chuffed with that. As much as anything because it proved to me that i can get it nearly right. In fact they were so good they didn't even need flatting or mopping.
I have done the boot and the bonnet too. The bonnet was a brand spanking new genuine Ford 3 litre bonnet still in primer. I paid £375 for it, which is a lot of money, but the fella said he paid that to Ford years ago when he bought it. It is also more than I paid for the rest of the car, so what the Hell

I like prefacelifts, but the flat bonnets just don't look right to me, so it had to go.
(It is in exceptionally good condition and is for sale if anyone is interested)
The boot turned out well, and again I decided not to mop it, the bonnet also turned out fairly good, but I did do some flatting and mopping on some of it. I just hate doing big flat panels. The roof is the same, I haven't worked out how to do one side then go around and do the other side without getting cronic overspray. It wasn't terrible though (and all my standards are very self critical).
A very big help is that I have bought an air fed mask. It was a bit of a cheapo and not much good if you want to take big breaths, but a massive improvement on the filter masks I have used until now. Luckily I have a damned big 3 phase compressor and it does the mask and spraygun with ease.

Tonight I got my son to help me with fitting the bonnet. I messed around with it and have got the gaps and height pretty much spot on. I have put new bolts on the rubber stops on the front (stainless and UNC!

) and used stainless nylocs and washers on the mounting brackets.

My last reply was going wonky, so I will carry on here.

While the car was outside I had another go with the mop on the bits that still weren't how I would like them. They came up great

Proper chuffed. I am guessing the compound is working different now the paint has cured a bit more. Whatever. It's good.
I've fitted all the doors, boot and bonnet now, and it is looking like a car again. I'm fairly impressed with it. It isn't perfect, but it will look nice when I'm done.
Sorry if that lot is a bit of a rant, and sorry for not doing regular updates. I have been struggling a bit, but I do feel I am on the right road again now.

I've been on here for quite a few years now Nige. I just checked, my first post was August 2004.

The engine that is being built is the second one for this car, and it hasn't even moved yet

The last one went in my Escort by accident and it is a brilliant engine. I haven't been on a RR yet, but it goes like stink!
This next one is supposedly even better. If it is just the same I will be chuffed.

The car shouldn't be too far off now. I hope I have done the majority of the work on it. Now comes all the money spending, but yes, I reckon it should look nice when it's done. Makes a change from Escorts

hello Dave a very nice looking Capri it has a very straight body work and very nice color as well .Once a friend of mine had one like that it was a pre face lift 16gt model it was mint the body work and this friend of mine always was thinking in doing it with a v8 but sadly after 5 years in the garage this friend of mine change he`s mind and lost all the interest and sadly he broke the Capri and the went to scrap oh man it was very sad that day

it`s nice to see someone doing the capri justice, i may have a 1974 mk1 capri 1.6 automatic going for sale very soon been sitting in the garage for more than 10 yrs bodywork is good, engine is incomplete but would make a wicked project let me know if you might be interested and i`ll sort some pics and further details out for ya. Everything on it is original still got a nice tidy interior let me know and i`ll get back to you
