Ok guys, speedo used to bounce around a bit but has now stopped altogether along with the odometer...

Just a cable change or other opinions please...

Hi Des,
My money is on a faulty cable. Before you buy a new one, however, check that the ends of your existing cable haven't come detached from the back of the speedo or from the side of the gearbox.
You can also test your current cable by undoing it at the gearbox end. If you turn the inner cable by hand, the speedo needle should move/flicker a little. If it doesn't move at all, the fault will be with the cable, the connection into the speedo, or the speedo itself. If the speedo needle does move when tested as described, the fault will be with the connection to the gearbox end, or the speedo drive gears inside the gearbox. The driven gear can be replaced easily enough, a replacement will cost around £25.

Rear axel is still whining so dropped everything off and sent to a local specialist for inspection. Replacement bearings required so hopefully all sorted soon.. Still haven't done the speedo cable but a replacement arrived this morning along with an oil seal and circlip so hopefully sorted this weekend, oh and replacing the accumulator..... :D

Got the Capri back last night, diff, pinion bearings and oil seals renewed, reset and it's as quiet as a mouse....very pleased.. :D

So I've fit the new accumulator today which has made a huge difference but when resetting RPM to aproxamately 900 the adjuster screw takes two or so turns left or right to allow any change which seems excessive to me? May have to sort the WUR after all.....

With the interior stripped out the new accumulator unit certainly pings loudly on shutdown....

Removed the WUR this morning and cleaned the filters, the plug cap has been missing for some time so there was a fair bit of corrosion to sort. The ally base plate cleaned but a bolt thread had been partially stripped at some point so made one fit for now. I'm sorting the wiring soon so will attend to everything then. Also removed the thermo switch as it was in a very poor state but it cleaned up well though not quite Andrews level... :D

Anyway cold and hot start have improved, not perfect but much better, I'll look at the injectors next re leaks etc just in case..

So this morning a friend and I set about removing the dash and associated items to have a look at what's been left/added in the wiring department behind the dash. Mr previous odd job mans has obviously tugged and pulled at various plastic panels which are broken or cracked so I'll need to find replacements and replace the majority of screws etc.

I need to replace the full blue circuit board/plastic sheet that is behind the cluster....anyone have one, please let me know.

It was a bit like spaghetti junction but all in all not too bad so cut out all the old non required wiring and stripped out the old alarm. I currently open the doors manually with the key but found that central locking had been fitted at some point and when tested still works so will combine this with a new alarm system later on.

There is only one spot of damage to the dash but it's located where I don't know how a repair will look when finished so I'll give it a go and respray it the correct colour grey, it's currently black.

This is the circuit blue plastic, if anyone has an old but usable head unit....

Hi Des,
You don't realise how much wiring is tucked up behind the dash until you start taking it all apart...
Good news about the central locking interface for the alarm. You'll have the flashiest Capri on the forum! :D

Hi Andrew

Yes lots of wiring tucked away, nice little bonus with the central locking but as you can imagine the work list is now even longer.. Under the bonnet is looking better with the old alarm out of the way and I can now fit a proper battery... :D

As I've removed the dash, clocks etc to sort the wiring I was left with an open oil pressure pipe so stripped one of my spare sets to remove the gauge and use this as blank for now (thanks Martin)... I'm going to try a lens scratch removal paste on the clear cover which will hopefully clear up the old cleaning scuffs, repaint the black metal plate, fit new bulbs etc and change over the circuit board.... Pleasantly surprised how easy it's been...so far.. :D

I'll transfer this circuit board to mine...anyone done it before?

I recently dismantled and reassembled my clocks due to removing the little blue bulb covers, which requires removing pretty much every component. there's a lot of screws and nuts by the time it's all apart!

The circuit board is really easy to remove, it's a flexible plastic thing that's prone to damage if you're too rough with them so just be careful. I wouldn't say they're delicate by any means, just be aware that it's only thin strips of copper inside an even thinner coating of plastic.

Removing is just the little earth contact nuts & washers (9x 4mm I think?), voltage regulator screw (the little black box mounted behind the tachometer), and the bulb holders; then carefully just pull it away over the plastic positioning poles being careful not to damage any of the connectors.
A 5 minute job if you've already got your dash out. I used some electrical contact cleaner on all the contacts whilst I had it apart too.

I'll be interested to see how you get on with cleaning up the clear plastic screen. I've been thinking about trying something but not got around to looking into products yet.

Oh, and a word of advice is don't turn your engine over while your clocks are disconnected because you'll be surprised how much oil pumps out the pressure gauge pipe onto your freshly cleaned carpet. Apparently.

When me and John stripped out my dash top and instrument panels not too long ago the first thing he did was warn me NOT to try to start the car up, which was fine while he was there to watch me ! When I then had to remove the instrument panel again, this time without John around, to replace the speedo unit I taped up my car keys with masking tape so I could not start up the car...it worked :)

Des, Great work you doing fella. Its a brilliant feeling to strip things down, rebuild them then see "hopefully" see them working again so good luck and let us know how it goes mate. I had great fun stripping out the faulty speedo, removing the odometer unit, and refitting it in a working speedo then test driving it and finding it all actually worked and I kept my "mileage"...PHEW ! But a very rewarding feeling as I am sure you are getting all the time with your restoration you are doing. Nice one Des.

By the way your engine compartment is really looking great mate. Keep up the excellent work mate. Nice one.

See you Sunday week at Beaulieu !

All the best

Nick
