MattMe's 1984 2.8 Injection

Post by MattMe »

I've only ever taken a few quick snaps on my mobile, but I thought it's about time to at least start a thread...

The day I picked it up. Quite a funny story. I was on the hunt for a few months, looking for cars in the North. Happened to check eBay whilst I was at my mum's house which is in a small village outside Nottingham. Rang the contact on the advert and it transpired that the car was one street away from my mum's. It was fate. The bodywork seemed excellent compared to other examples in teh same price range I'd viewed already, so a deposit was put down and I collected the following week.

Image

Unfortunately it wasn't all rosy. A few bits fell off on the drive home.
The story is that an enthusiast owned it and paid for the bodywork and paint to be done, but never put it back together. Sold it on to the guy I bought it from who, as it turns out, basically bolted it back together as quickly as he could to move it on. A shame, but the bodywork was my main concern. The rest I can fix (with a little help from the forum, of course).

Bought a few service items the same week:
Image

Took it for a tune. Found I had a fuelling issue, which I know some of you have read about... :|
Image

And now she rests on my driveway, awaiting some serious work...
In the next couple weeks I plan to finish my wiring, putting the rebuilt heater back in, and putting the interior back together. Then I'll be ordering something to clean out the tank, a new accumulator, poly bushes for everything, new shocks, new springs and lots of shultz/paint....

The interior looks a little bit like this currently:

Hi,
What a cracking 2.8 you've got there. The bodywork looks superb, and it's got pepperpots too! :D
OK, you've had some little niggles to sort out along the way, but now they're mostly fixed you've got yourself an excellent car. You'll soon be enjoying every second of ownership, and who can blame you?

All the best,
Andrew.

Thanks Andrew.

It is in pretty good condition overall. I think I naively underestimated how expensive even sorting the little issues out would be!
I'm planning a trip to Le Mans next summer so I have a deadline to get it perfect.
The pepperpots have grown on me for sure, but I am actually planning on getting some 15 inch wheels on it in the future. I just prefer they way the fill the arches.

Looking forward to be able to drive it, although I have enjoyed learning about the wiring, and the sense of bringing the car back to it's former glory.

Hi,
Are you planning on exhibiting your car at any shows?
If you want a Capri fix, I highly recommend the CCI National in May. That will be a good little warm-up drive to test the Capri before going to Le Mans.

All the best,
Andrew.

I have just bought that last accumulator. Only cost £84.69 delivered. "Only". Haha.

I've not been a fan of pepperpots in the past, but like I said they are growing on me. They're certainly period, and I'll keep hold of them if/when I replace them.

CCI National in May sounds good. I'm up for that :)
Do many from here go?

Hi,
Last year there was me, John (Taff40ish), Rob (Freelanderfan), Ian (Mellow-yellow), Dan (dan the capri fan), Martin (martinc92), garelli-rider and no doubt a few others that I didn't know were on the forum. Here's hoping we can get a few more to go next year.
There are some photos on this thread:

All in all, it was a good day out.

Me too!
I'm hoping to keep it looking fairly standard, but without going to extent of worrying which way the screw heads were facing when it left the factory, or what model of spade connectors were used.

Actually, one thing I've been wondering myself was what colour to paint the fuel tank.
I've decided I'll paint rather than shultz it, but should I go silver with black straps or black tank, black straps?
up until now I'd been thinking black for ease of maintenance and subtlety, but saw Andrew's thread and his silver tank looks pretty dapper. Mine's a silver rattle-can job currently.

Hi,
I agree! :D
Silver is the factory standard colour, and I think it looks quite snazzy.

I have to agree. to me they will always be THE wheels.... You have to consider that back in 1981, the 3 litre Capri and later the 2.8, weren`t just `pretty quick`. At the time lots of people were driving around in cars which would struggle to pass 90mph - here was a vehicle which could do 130, almost 50% faster! It was like a Saturn V rocket in comparison; most people could never afford to run one (due to crippling insurance for one thing) but.... the aesthetic, the power, they really were absolutely in a class of their own. And how did you tell one of these supercars (they were!) from their more prosaic brothers? The pepperpots! You could tell from 1/4 mile away `it`s a 2.8` just from the wheels. Like the 4 spokes on the RS2000, they were absolutely iconic. To me, and my generation, the pepperpots are just THE wheels; "this is a 2.8".

Well put Steve :agree: Pepperpots made a statement back then and IMO that's the way I want mine to stay!

Andrew.
99% agree with this, however mine is black and I'm not sure a silver tank would look right on a black car. So for this reason I will be respraying mine black.

Hi Neil,
Perhaps a silver tank will brighten up the underside of an otherwise all black car?

I'm up for this again next year, it was great seeing the forum cars & owners plus loads of others I'd seen only in magazine features too.
Yours would make a great addition It looks to be in great shape, smart in red too. Keep us up to date on progress.
Cheers,
Rob
