1987 Capri 1.6 Laser

Post by Lizard350 »

Hi! Just joined the forum and thought I'd drop in and put a post of my car up :) . I have always wanted a Capri from an early age, but when I passed my test I simply couldn't afford to insure one. I'm now 20 and my insurance has dropped a lot so I took the plunge and bought this one in September 2014. Its pretty much a standard car, apart from the wheels and a weber carburettor. Concentrated on getting all the mechanical bits up to scratch and have just finished the bodywork, had it fully re-sprayed in the original Rosso red. Should have the decals back on it soon and am thinking about putting some minilites on it. Anyway, here's a couple of pics:

The car as it is now, decals still to be put on...

Engine bay, started to get rid of that horrible carpet! :D

Already had a look through some of the other cars here, awesome stuff!
See you around :)

Hi,
Welcome to the forum. :welcome:
That's a cracking looking Capri you've got there, really nice, but I think it would look better if you did buy some minilites. Just my opinion, of course.

It's great that there seems to be a lot of younger guys buying a Capri to help keep the legend alive.

All the best,
Andrew.

Thank you Andrew :)

Think the minilites will be the next item on the shopping list! I still have the original set of RS4 alloys too, which is a relief.

Only thing I'm worried about is if I will need to do any body modifications to handle the minilites. Thinking of putting some 7x13's on.

Hi,
Fantastic. Minilights suit every car, and 7x13 wheels will fit with no modifications.
For reference, the 2.8 has wheels of this size with 205/60-13 tyres.

All the best,
Andrew.

looking good mate, i personally like the compomotives better but minilites will still look good. basically what Andrew said above, i've got some 13x7 wheels and the tyres i've ordered are 205/60 x13 so fitting them should be fine. when i work on it you can legitimately sit inside the wheel arch will plenty of room =)

Excellent Laser......looking good even before the side decals are applied. The engine bay is coming along a treat too. I'm intrigued by the blue hoses; can you tell me something about them please ?.

All the best,

Andy

Cheers guys! :)

Relived to hear that the wheels wont be needing any body modifications.

I have already fitted an uprated core radiator, as the old one was shot. Replaced it while replacing the heater blower motor too! lol The temperature very rarely goes above the halfway point, so seems to be a good buy.

The hoses came off EBay, think the company is called JS performance and they can manufacture them in a variety of colours which is nice. They aren't cheap compared to standard black ones but I prefer the look of them. They fit straight on out the box apart from the crankcase breather, which seems to be moulded slightly at the wrong angle, but you hardly see it when on the car so not really a big issue :D

Hi Andy,
They are silicone hoses, by the way. Silicone hoses are more expensive than the rubber equivalents, as Lizard350 says, however they reputedly outlast rubber ones. Whether they do or not, only time will tell. They do add a splash of colour to the engine though, and in Lizard350's case, they look fantastic. :D

All the best,
Andrew.

Many thanks for the further info, Andrew.

You're right, they do add a splash of colour. Might treat myself.....wonder if they sell them in 'Mineral Blue' to match my engine bay !!

All the best,

Andy. :D

Hoping to order the new wheels soon. Just to confirm, 13x7s should fit ok and wont need any modifications?

The recommended tyre size on the website is 175/50 R13, would this be ok? Not a big expert on wheels to be honest! :?

13x7s are fine and 205/60/13 is what you want :D
Even 185's look too skinny IMO

Hi,
I agree with Andy, 175 section tyres would look too narrow for 7J rims.
The wheels you order will have to have a PCD of 4x108 to fit the hubs, and make sure you order wheels with the correct offset. The 2.8's wheels had an offset of +5.
You could even fit 15" rims with no modifications at all. The 280 was fitted with 7Jx15" wheels and 195/50-15 tyres.

All the best,
Andrew.

Cheers for the help guys, wheels really are not my thing :?

The wheels Im looking at have the correct PCD, but have an offset of ET-7.

Think 205/60R13's will be the way to go! Whats the smallest profile do you think I could get away with? 195?

Cheers again :D

Hi,
Those wheels should be fine.

195 tyres aren't that much narrower than 205s, you would 't notice any difference.

All the best,
Andrew.

Brilliant, thanks for the guidance! Lol. Just tried to order a set of wheels this morning but they are out of stock until late September/early October. Luckily I have found a set exactly the same on EBay, so might buy buying those.

Had the decals put back on today, she's finally looking like a laser again :D

Managed to find a set of minilites on EBay, got some tyres ordered and they are now fitted to the car. They are Nankang 205/60 R13's like you say Tom :)

Was slightly pissed off when I looked at the car this afternoon and someone had written in the dust on the bonnet, what goes through peoples heads? Good job I didn't see them do it, bet a crook look can come in handy...

Anyway, just a few pics:
