Re: What is this?
Hi,
The GT4 was available in a choice of three colours, one of them being strato silver with bitter chocolate (brown) interior with Beta plus fabric. The specification of the GT4 was, I believe, that of the 1.6L, except for the stripes and the GT4 also has the 6 clock dashboard, as opposed to the 2 clock configuration of the L, and the clocks should also have red highlights. At first features on the options list were alloy wheels, head restraints, remote control driver's mirror, passenger door mirror, tailgate wash/wipe and rear package tray. Later, these were included as 'major standard features' on this model.
There is some info on the GT4 on this site:
http://www.fordcapri.co.uk/
Now to the question of whether the GT4s were registered as such. I have checked on howmanyleft, and there is not a specific entry for the GT4, so maybe they were recorded on the documents as a 1600L. Someone on here will know.
I hope this was of some help. If I come across any more information, I will post it on here.
Andrew.

Re: What is this?
That sounds like the definitive answer that you are looking for. Good news if the car is genuine, as I believe that the GT4 is quite rare these days.Bug wrote:Had one once and it was definitely registered as a 1.6L

Re: What is this?
Thanks for replying, the only thing that is making me doubt that it a GT4 is that there are no head restraints and no remote drivers door mirror. It got everything else, the six clocks with red trim etc.. hence why I'm confused. Had the car since Feb after looking for a Capri for 2 years. Little bit of rust on it, but quite solid and it runs well...
Even got the original stereo which made my kids laugh (no FM)..

You don't say what year the car is, so I would guess that it's an earlier one before these features were fitted as standard.

Re: What is this?
Sorry, its 1980 W registered in AUG.. so I guess its early.

The GT4 was introduced in February 1980, so yours may be considered early.

Re: What is this?
Thanks again, sounds like its genuine or at least potentially will have to clean it up and get it to a few shows.

Re: What is this?
A 1980 one here that was sold had headrests

I'm no expert at all, but if it looks genuine in every other respect then either the original purchases did not take certain options or the interior was changed during its life?

Re: What is this?
Possibly, its the right colour interior, bitter chocolate and all the rest is correct. I going to say it's a GT4 till someone corrects me.
At the very least its an unusual 16 L
Thanks

Re: What is this?
Agreed. I really like the look of the GT4 and I have never seen one in the flesh. I've seen just about every other Capri driving around at one time or another but never a GT4. I read somewhere that only 500 were sold in the UK.peers.dupp wrote: Looks like you've got yourself a nice GT4!

Great looking car, best of luck with it.

Meant to say, put up some more photos if you get the chance. Would be great to see it all over.

I'm not sure about the sales figures of the GT4, as I can't find any figures in any of my books. One thing is for sure. There can't be that many around now.
Same here. For some people the stripes are a bit overpowering, but I think that they compliment the shape well.MS Injection wrote: I really like the look of the GT4 and I have never seen one in the flesh

Re: What is this?
Don't know how reliable it is but I read it here (note another forum said 500 sold in UK, this says 500 made).

Can't find any authentic empirical evidence...so forum based anecdotal evidence it is!

That's all we've got to go on, so it must do! I can't find any sales figures of specific models either. I would have thought that 500 made in total seems too low. In the Steve Saxty book he states that sales of the GT4 were "reasonable".

Agreed that it is nice. Good to see it all around. I think you've got a good looking Capri there

Good luck with the car, fingers crossed you don't find any big issues with it.

At nearly 34 years old, bound to be I guess unless somebody restores it. I've got a bit on mine too. Just clean it up, protect it to stop it getting worse, keep it dry as you can and keep an eye on it; preserve and repair later! That's what I have done.ADE wrote:Little bit of rust on it, but quite solid and it runs well...
Depends where you live and how far you want to take it. The link below should take you to a site that lets you find out about shows local to you (thanks to Andrew, he posted the link on another thread a little while ago)ADE wrote:I'm going to try and get to some shows over the summer if anyone can recommend some good ones..
