Whooligan's Cars

Post by whooligan »

G'day
My name is Glenn. I was originally from Nottingham but emigrated to Australia with my family at the age of 8.....I'm now 43, but still miss the Old country. Have been back twice to visit family.
Anyway, I have 4 Capris in various stages of restoration.
I'm a member of my local Capri Club here in Melbourne. The Capri still has quiet a following down under with a few cars still getting about in Historic racing and Capris have always been popular drag racing cars.
Most have ended up as V8 conversions but recent rule changes make it difficult to register and insure modified cars so they are usually confined to the track.

My club car is a 1971 GT V6 Capri (rare auto) but unfortunately got smashed earlier this year.
It has taken me 6 months to get the parts required to fix it as you just can't buy then (new or used) in this country. I ended up buying an abandoned V8 project to cut up as a last ditch effort but fortunately I managed to get a rare panel off a local ex-racer and parts seller.
The car is now waiting to get fixed at my panel beater.

In the meantime, I'm working on a Mk 3 project. Mk 3s are rare in Australia but are relatively plentiful in club circles (I think we have over a dozen in Melbourne) all personal imports that have made their way back into enthusiasts after the original owners have let them go. Mine was imported in 1982 so it never saw much of the salt that destroys them over in your land.

Despite impressions, we do get plenty of rain here in Australia and the cars to rust. Most of our cars have rust as well but usually not as bad as in the UK. We cut up for parts what you guys restore but in recent years prices have risen to such an extent that cutting up a car is now the absolute last resort.

Anyway.....I've bored you all senseless, no doubt so I'll post some pics later on and look forward to hearing back with comments.

Heres a pic of my GT V6 along with an RS2000 I bought off a friend. I have another RS2000 but the Escorts I've had over the years are a whole other story.

Here's my Mk 3 in its current state.....

Heres the car on purchase nearly 10 years ago.

Car came from Perth Western Australia.

Had a 2.0 pinto out of a Cortina in it with a blown head gasket. Was going to do a rolling resto but I was convinced to strip it down to do a full resto.

Doesn't really need it as the shell is mint. Virtually no rust in it other than a little around the windscreen and the hatch hinges.

Here's my track car (Perana Replica)

Long time project was part of a deceased estate. Will be fitted with a 302 Windsor V8 and T5 5spd (similar to cossie gearbox) out of a later model Falcon......Believe it or not the V8s will be gone after 2016 in Australia. We may be getting Mustangs if we are lucky, but there are still plenty around.

Greetings and welcome to the forum. Great to know that you're doing your bit in keeping the "legend" alive. Plenty of assistance and advice on here if you want it.

Will be watching your progress on your resto with interest. :goodluck:

G'day Dellboy.
As I speak my V6 is going under the panel beaters hammer so hopefully I'll have the car back for Xmas. Then the 4spd will be going in.
It will be good to get behind the wheel of a capri again after 10 months.

Its been a while since I updated my thread.

Not much has happen other than sold a few cars and bought a few more.....No Capris, just Escorts.

I'm hoping to start a rolling resto on my GT V6 in the coming months. I plan to convert it to a manual soon as the factory auto has finally give up the ghost and making terrible noises in reverse gear.

I managed to source a gearbox from a fellow forum member (also in Aust) so I didn't have to get one shipped over from the UK at great expense.....Although the rebuild cost me plenty. Anyway, its right to fit now so the interior will be coming out soon, pedal box fitted, auto out and 4spd in.

More than likely, I take to engine out and spray the engine bay while I'm at it.....Pics soon.

Started removing the Essex in preparation for gearbox conversion. The motor is in good order so will only be doing a gasket, plug change, clean and paint, then re-install.

Still have to line up the panel-beater to do a bit of rust repair in the top corners and full engine bay respray.
Will also do a brake booster overhaul while its out of the car and the pedal box is being swapped over. I'm also getting the clutch cable tube welded in at the same time.

Looking forward to the extra power the 4-spd will unlease. The BW35 Auto loses about 20%. The car was dynoed at 80bhp at the rear wheels, so I'm hoping for over 100bhp afterward which should be ok for an original 44 year old motor. (Never been rebuilt)
