Re: Mk 1 Facelift Capri Conversion (pic heavy)
Dad finally parted with it in late 1998. Drove it for a year, crashed it, and parked it up til 2003. When I got it out it was pretty rusty, so from 03' til 05 under took rust work (no pics), and then started on the engine conversion in 2007.
Bought a 1uz-fe (Quad Cam 4000cc v8)
A custom made bellhousing,
And a w55 (Toyota) Gearbox & a nice short movement shifter

Re: Mk 1 Facelift Capri Conversion (pic heavy)
Modified the oil pick up
and modified the sump to be rear sump
had it all machined flat and the two main angles (block & Bellhousing).
Then ... I bought another sump to redo this because I never happy with the end result. (anyways onwards with the story)

Re: Mk 1 Facelift Capri Conversion (pic heavy)
Then came mounting the engine.
I tried this ...
ignoring the obvious flaws the design induced bump steer
so it was literally binned, along with the double sway bars and the factory oil filled mounts, went to this (which works), puts the motor dead centre ...
I re-used the factory cross member, sandwiched a 6mm plate between it and the chassis rail and drilled it for the pattern of the cross member (three bolt's a side). The 6mm plate extrudes about 25mm so bend is no real issue. The mounts are re-purposed trailing arms, 6mm plate gussets, and a 6mm plate engine mounting plate drilled to engines mount pattern. It works.

Re: Mk 1 Facelift Capri Conversion (pic heavy)
The new location is a tight fit. I had to cut out the front box section to fit a radiator in front of it, and because I felt it wasn't worth repair the rust in it. I used a rectangle 2mm thick box section.
This made for less room for the engine between the firewall and the now new box section. It's a tight fit. There is no way the engine can float forward, so this is ok.

I modified the sway bar mounts, gusseted them, and welded them to the shell, massive difference from factory
I then added a 31mm sway bar.

Re: Mk 1 Facelift Capri Conversion (pic heavy)
Since the radiator popped through the bottom of the front valance, I modified it. I've never liked this much.
It blended ok, but the design just doesn't look right (to me anyway)
I modified the slam panel, welding in a oval mild steel (to both slam panel and inner wings) section blending it with carbon fibre (had 2mtrs handy) and resin then filler
Please excuse my temporary wiring and set up.
A distance view.

I reskinned the passengers door.
Please excuse the pile of junk in front of the car (workshop clean out)
I need to tig weld a double bead down edge vertical edge, .. the gap is 10mm out. Not looking forward to that, it's a going to be painful.

That looks nice.
One the ground, .. only needs electrics and steering sorted.
But wait ... there's a massive issue here. My personal life and ambitions.
Ok, so I want a degree (or two), and that means I'm going to be poor for a while so why don't I just take this to the next level and accept the fact the best I'm going to be able to do is piece-meal token work.
Lets up this up a notch or three. .....

...need individual throttle bodies
and custom manifolds ...
Almost ready for HPC coating, but I've got some more die grinding (smoothing) to do on the various transition inside (and appearance too)
oh and a turbo ..
a really, ... really big one.

Alterations to make the huge garret truck turbo suitable for car use.
Flanges to turbine housing,
Completed with 80mm outlet pipe.
Physical location problem (unresolved as yet)

New collectors,
First header done.
header with pass through flange pipe (sealing aid)
And final flange for next transition
painted black for now, will HPC coat later after a sandblast.

had an extra pair of flanges made up, not sure I like the look of the first header, think I can do better.

Re: Mk 1 Facelift Capri Conversion (pic heavy)
Some awesome work there.
My mate stuck one of those toyota engines in an E30 touring with throttle bodies, looked awesome and spat flame.
Have you done any mods for the engine to take the turbo?

It's going to get;Ghia15 wrote:Have you done any mods for the engine to take the turbo?
New Aftermarket rings, and bearings
8:1 forged pistons,
H Beam forged rods.
ARP stud and rod kit.
(and obviously a re-bored), crank polished, general rebuild.
The head's are getting
Aftermarket Cams (10.5 lift & longer duration non over lap)
aftermarket valve springs & retainers.
Larger valves. & retainers.
Port tidy up/ polish.
I'll do that after I finish with the body.

Re: Mk 1 Facelift Capri Conversion (pic heavy)
I just modified a rb or s15 crossmember to fit a ford capri. With 1uzfe engine mounts. I thought i might drop a few pics. Starting work on installation of a rx7 s6 (fd3s) subframe into the rear.

1uz seems to be the way forward for a few people, it's going to be my next engine also. The expensive bits are converting to manual gearbox, and fitting the turbo they are inevitably going to have fitted.

Re: Mk 1 Facelift Capri Conversion (pic heavy)
The engine and gearbox mounts have been vetted by a certifier in the past but i would be fairly keen to change the gearbox mount to be exactly the same mount type as the engine. The front crossmember was modified using 2.5mm mild steel,(same as nissan used) but its no longer carrying engine weight its only suspension and steering so it should be fine as is once i tidy a few things up. The back end is a different story. Im figuring out how a placement jig can be made which will work out. But then the fun starts and i get to find out if its even possible to do what im trying to do. (Fit a s6 fd3s rx7 rear suspension under a capri). Without hacking the car to bits. It does look like it should be possible to more or less leave the car as it is and just add stuff. I'd like this to be reversible if possible (pft fat chance).
