Andrew, in no way was I having a go at your comment above, it was absolutely true and I agree the dealer is doing the right thing in stating what he does on his adverts. I'm sorry if you felt I was doing so. In my experience, dealers are rarely qualified mechanics or automotive engineers and he is doing the best he can and has done as much due diligance as possible.

I've been in or around the motor trade for all my working life and I have seen numerous examples of vehicles which differ from what is on the DVLA, Hpi or whatever database and in this example it's a case of it probably being re-shelled without notifying the relevant authorities. It could also be a case that when it was restored new inner wings were fitted and the V6 strengthening not put back on - who knows? Only the person(s) that actually did it.

Hi Paul,
No offence taken, and it's clear from your posts that you have a vast amount of experience in different aspects of the motor trade.
Paul G wrote: It could also be a case that when it was restored new inner wings were fitted and the V6 strengthening not put back on - who knows? Only the person(s) that actually did it.
Well, it states in the advert that the car has had a full recent restoration and that "ACCORDING TO  THE FILE  FROM  THE PREVIOUS  PREVIOUS  OWNER  A  RESTORATION  WAS  CARRIED OUT  A  FEW YEARS  BACK". If the resto mentioned in the file is from a specialist restoration company, then surely the work the car underwent should be fully documented. Maybe I'm being unreasonable here, but if the paintwork on the bonnet is blistering already, I suspect that perhaps it wasn't the best quality restoration to begin with.....

If you look carefully at it it has a later driver's door with separate lock and an early passengers!

At least you have one :) Would love a 3.0S but I can't see it happening......

The Orange 3.0S(???) is still for sale, and well spotted with the mismatched doors, easily overlooked when the car looks nice on the surface, you don't always see the wood for the trees....

:goodluck:

Trying to get my head around a car with mismatched doors that is 15 grand.

Struggling with it, to be honest.

It doesn't exactly seem to have flown out of their showroom door whereas a correct one in that colour probably would have.

What's it worth? I don't know but it would probably cost £2-3 thousand to get the strengthening done and the door sorted out professionally and then would you be left with a reshelled S or a replica?

Its interesting, that even though a lot of people moan and groan about ever increasing prices of 70s Fords, at least when they get to bigger money people start to be more critical as buyers.
15 years ago that 3.0S many people would have been happily purchased, probably at half the price, and no one would get too upset about the door locks or exact history of the shell - well not while they were haring around giving it plenty of Essex burble.

But once you are asking 5 figures, you can't be dicking about.

Any one seen as "S" with rear opening quarter windows? door cards and dash don't look correct either. For 15K it needs to be correct and its not

That I like! But then I like a lot of cars that are then ripped to shreds by other forum members! :)

'least the seller has gone through the effort of presenting it properly and making sure the basics are there, like it has matching doors.

It's a good job we have people that look past a nice paint job, too late once you've bought it and then find it's not what you thought

I was almost afraid to put the White car on here in fear of looking a bigger :wank: than normal

It does look like a great car, providing the work HAS been done to a good standard.....

That's right Andy, get the disclaimer in at the start!

I like to think I would have noticed the door lock thing if I was inspecting the car in person, but it's easy to miss looking at photos.
As you say, all that glitters isn't gold (or signal orange).....

Hi,
An observation on the door handle/lock situation on the signal orange car. If you save the photo of the nearside to your PC you can zoom right in and see that it is, in fact, the later door handle as it does not have an inset lock. It looks to me as if the lock has been removed from the door, perhaps for security reasons?

Andrew

Edit: I seem to remember that it was all the rage in the early 90's to take the door locks off the doors and fill in the holes that were left. That might have been the case here, or it might be a later handle on an early door as suggested. We just don't know for sure, although it's fair to say that this car has got a story to tell. As stated earlier, if someone is spending big money, they should expect the car to be right.

The orange one definitely seems to be late 4-cyl shell, no strengthening as mentioned already, also a rear tow hook and seatbelt sliders bolted to inner sills never appeared on a 3.0S. Engine maybe sourced from a non 'S' as accelerator bracket has an auto kick down bracket, dizzy has wrong vacuum pod.
Interior just looks a bit too scruffy for a £15k car, and as well as the door cards the winders are wrong. Still a very nice looking car on the outside though.
Now the white one is hard to fault right down to the correct battery terminals and bonnet prop clip :)

Strengthening plates under the bonnet can be added reasonably easy, the surest way to tell if it's a V6 shell are these ones under the wing...

Image

#1,2,3 & 4 are V6 only, the blue lines are where the long plate #1 is separated into 2 smaller plates on the 4-cyl. #1 would be the hardest plate to add to a 4-cyl shell as it is behind the strut tower.

There's a Man that knows his onions

When I first saw the ad I was surprised the car wasn't t least £20k, in that sort of condition and being a dealer price....

Nice looking car, but not at that price if not genuine.
