2.8i wanted please(£7600 budget)

Post by Notepad12 »

Hey all, I've got a budget of around 5,000 at the moment, the last Capri I owned was a dog's dinner  so I'm looking for a better condition'd one..

Is this the right amount for a decent 2.8? If so has anyone got one for sale? Cheers!

I think you will struggle to get a good 2.8 for £5k.....Maybe £7/8k at present, as prices have shot up the last 18 months / 2 years.

A smaller engine car would just about be realistic though at that price.

Yeah at that budget you'll struggle to get a decent 2.8. Maybe a 2.0 or a 1.6 in good nick (soem minor work required) but not a 2.8, at least not one thats not a complete rotter.

Got a budget of up to £7,600 now for the right 2.8...Would prefer a 4speed/non special 2.8

Cheers

Hi,
If it's any help, the Hagerty valuation tool currently values the 2.8 4 speed as £7500 for a car in fair condition, described thus:
"condition 4 cars are daily drivers, with flaws visible to the naked eye. The chrome might have pitting or scratches, the windshield might be chipped. Paintwork is imperfect, and perhaps the fender has a minor dent. The interior could have split seams or a cracked dash. No major parts are missing, but the wheels could differ from the originals, or the interior might not be stock. No major customisations have been made. A #4 car can also be a deteriorated restoration. "Fair" is the one word that describes a #4 car."

It sounds as though with your budget you should be able to avoid buying a complete rotter, but it possibly won't stretch to buying a car that doesn't need thousands spent on it.

The valuation tool suggests that £10,500 is a realistic budget to buy a decent car.

Good luck with your search, I hope you find a car soon.

Andrew.

From the advert:

"The previous owner was clearly an old home garage guy, everything is covered in grease underneath, which makes a mess when you try and do anything but does help stopping the rust"

Makes me suspicious

Hey Andy,

Thanks for the reply!

He states he has spent a lot on new suspension, and has the paper MOT's for between 09-17 since he has owned it - the mileage going from 10(4,148) to 75,000 could be perfectly explained by the mileage he might have done over the years in the car, so in total 175,000 miles?

He also states its harder to pass an MOT in NI than England...True or non? I'm not too clue'd up about it

It may have done 71000 miles since 2009 making it 175000 :? Or Speedo has been replaced :headscratch:

Yes the MOT Test in NI is a lot stricter than ours...Maybe a good thing in this case :)

Why don't sellers clean the car inside and out before taking pictures

Thanks for the reply,

Looks like the dials have been changed... white background with black numbers/symbols

As for cleaning the car I guess some people just don't have the time!

Hi,
Not necessarily. The white dial kits are generally stickers that are laid over the originals. Therefore, that wouldn't alter the indicated mileage.

As for cleaning the car, I agree with Andy. If somebody is selling a car, they should take the time to show it in it's best possible light.

All the best,
Andrew.

I have a problem with the whole stating a budget thing (make a cup of tea and get comfortable) :D

In stating your budget you've just given anyone who had a Capri that they wanted, say 6 grand for an excuse to stick 1600 quid on the price, it goes down to that old saying "You can't be buyer and seller", I know it's a bit of a nightmare at the moment, when we have a whole generation who think they're traders, but don't like to cover the legal or tax obligations of being one, and like to state a price even less.

I'm not sure what's the best way to do it, but stating a budget isn't it in my opinion, similarly I don't bother with adverts with "offers" on them, as the seller will wait to see what you offer, then miraculously have been offered more already, then there's my personal favourite "offers over", piss off, if your price is 10 grand, then it's 10 grand, minus a bit for haggle space, not 10 grand but will accept 11 or 12.

On a positive note I think we're currently seeing the top end of prices, or are at least very close to it, but then I could be talking complete rubbish, who knows, but either way I hope you find what you're searching for, they're out there (apparently), you just have to sift through the crap and dodgy sellers to find them

Found a Capri,

Needs a new rear wheel arch panel due to rust and the paint is a bit dull..

How much would a wheel arch replacement be?

Sorry about the lack of content, I typed a rant, read it, and realised that if the wrong person read it I'd end up being sectioned under the mental health act, so had to "edit" it a little..
